I don't really care much about 3D, network, extra HDMI inputs. I am just wanting to compare the sound. If the same set of speakers are used, will the 809 sound better than the 805? Anyone??
Thanks in advance
I can't offer any first hand experience with any of those other than the 805, but here are a few thoughts...
depending on how much of a believer you are in room correction software, that could potentially make a noticable difference in sound between the models you mentioned. the 805 and 809 both have multeq xt, while the 818 has big daddy xt32, and (in a move i find somewhat odd) the 828 has been scaled all the way back to just plain old multeq. also, the three newer models all have dynamic eq, whereas the 805 does not.
again it depends on how much emphasis you place on such a thing, but the weights (aka power supply beefyness) vary fairly significantly also, despite all four of them being rated about the same power-wise (130/135W @ 8 ohms*). the 805 weighs ~51 lbs, the 809 and 818 come in at just over 40 lbs, and the 828 drops all the way to 33 lbs.
* note that onkyo doesn't give an 8 ohm rating on the 828, but since it's 6 ohm rating is the same as the others, it's a pretty safe assumption that its 8 ohm rating would be too.
