Panasonic EH75V & DTV

I am thinking of getting a Panasonic EH75V. This is a DVR that doesn't require a subscription. It has a number of other nice features like DVR to DVD and VHS to DVD. It has a few issues too, such as maybe the TV Guide listing service will work with my Comcast connection or maybe not. If not I will need to record in the old VCR way: record channel 9 from 5:30p to 6:30p every weekday. But I can live with this.

The question I have is what will happen when I can no longer get analog cable in 2009? Will I be able to still even record in the old VCR way or will I need to make sure the digital to analog converter box is set to the correct channel and always set the DVR to channel 3 or something.

I just want a non-tape way of recording TV without the subscription.

Cable subscribers are not supposed to see any diff. when the switchover occurs, only OTA users. You should still be able to record on the EH75 thru the Line inputs. At some point in the transition, each cable co. has to decide on whether or not they force everyone to go all-digital or they continue to supply a cable signal that old units can see thru RF...at least the "basic cable" channels.

Even if the cable cos. don't continue any analog signal, the FCC/govt will subsidize, with $40 vouchers, up to two digital converter boxes for people/homes who "attest" that they receive some of their TV solely via OTA antenna.

Here's a good summary of the analog-digital switchover and its effects.
