Onkyo DV-HD805 HDDVD Player - Picture and a few Details - Page 28

Boot from power without disc: 37s Onkyo vs. 43s HD-XA2
Boot from eject without disc: 39s Onkyo vs. 46s HD-XA2
Disc loading first time: both around 30s (+/- some secs)
Disc loading subseq times: both around 6s

HD-XA2 measurements came from my player and the Onkyo measurements from Brad. (Joe reports disc loading times of 10-12s for, I believe, subsequent loads which would seem to differ from above.)

Correct?

Here are my times for my September 2007 NA XA2 firmware 2.7:
Boot from power without disc:36seconds
Boot from eject without disc: 39seconds
Disc loading first time: 27seconds (Shooter HDDVD)

So more like the onkyo than the european XE1, it may have to do with 2.7, it may have to do with my Sept 2007 model.

So unless you've got hookups like joerod...I'd say the 805 is a big bust!!

Agreed.

Mod

not sure what is going on here but PM me if I can help: you should know that PM's between members are really not private since AVS Administrators can read them (and will if there is a complaint)

now....back to discussions of the player please

Thanks

...and hopefully with some proof, rather than a "special" version from Onkyo

To quote the rules, there's no Posting of information that can not be verified but is stated as fact. (Proof?)

Is there =any= indication that the Onkyo is, even on paper spec (DACs maybe) superior to the XA2?

(ps. You mean the mods can read PMs?! GAH! )
(pps. I didn't mean to suggest that negative PMs aren't a big deal above, just my opinion that the so-called "attacks" on Joe from those challenging the post, not the poster, were for the most part not out of line IMHO)
(pps. Hi Mark!)

Absolutely no indication, people have even photographed all the internals, they look like an XA2, they smell like an XA2 and they say Toshiba on them!! How goes it out east eh?

Girls on this forum? Where? Don't go joe. Well, what I'd really like to know now is from anyone with a real 805 if the pq is as joerod said. Also, I don't think he ever got around to talking about the various movies, layers, etc. and how they performed on the 805. Analysis anyone?

We just received our first allocation of Onkyo DV HD805s. I opened one immediately and can tell you the front panel is very nicely designed.

I'll do a side-by-side shoot out early next week with my new JVC HD10. JVC's new front projector has 2 HDMI inputs so with HQV's Benchmark disc and Joe Kanes DVD Essentials discs I should be able to see the advantages Onkyo engineers have been able to squeeze out of the Reon processor with software improvements. I'll also do the same test with Pioneer's Elite PRO-110FD and a Gefen HDMI splitter.

I have also confirmed that Onkyo will be supporting HD DVD with more product developments and will also be supporting BD in the future.

These high end high-definition video/high-resolution audio players pare beautifully with the latest mid to high-end AVRs. HDMI 1.3 switching passing HBR and the future advancements offered by the greater bandwidth of HDMI 1.3 is very promising. I can't say more now as they will have me executed if I keep blabbing about future developments so Ill stay focused on the current advancements that will keep us all busy anyway.

Regarding bashing and flaming, I have had my fair share of negative public posting and very disturbing PM's. Some of which I have deserved and most not. I have had some very serious threating PMs, which I reported to the police as I know the identity of the member. Some days it makes me want to quit, but mostly it make me more dedicated to keep reporting what I am told by industry leaders and experts and engineering management. So for now I'm focused on reporting what I know and can find out and to keep pushing our beloved manufacturers how to make things better.

Thanks Robert! Look forward to your shootout!

Specifics on 1080p24 would be appreciated (see past posts above)... Raw stream with XA2, Onkyo etc......

Silver dual format Blu-ray and HDDVD player from Onkyo would definitely merit consideration.

Hi Robert,
Are these available for pre order from you yet? Thanks!

I really liked your review of the new Panny 30K. I learned a valuable lesson as to why most of the topdogs in the AV industry do not post in these (HD DVD & Blu ray) threads. Some things are better left unsaid. My unit was supposed to be delivered to me last Wednesday or Friday but UPS screwed up and made it Monday. I am glad now I did not get it then because I would have misled more people. Again I am sorry to those that I let down. I do not plan to do anymore nextgen player reviews. Also, if you had to return your unit just send me a PM and I will compensate you for your gas. Take care all because this is my last post over here... For sure this time...

Oh and I would say (as did Onkyo & Tosh) the HD805 (at least mine) is more of a cross between the XA2 and the up and coming XA3...

Joe, I just want to say that I'm terribly sorry you were treated badly via PM. That's completely inexcusable and to anyone angry at you about the Pioneer comments... That was my mistake and has nothing to do with Joe.

No, I haven't returned the Onkyo yet and, quite frankly, after hearing the promising news of a potential firmware upgrade, I'm willing to put my trust in you completely and keep the unit in anticipation of that update. I do wish you'll return to the discussion, as it seems like only you and I even have the Onkyo HD805. It's going to be a boring thread with only one owner.

Perhaps this thread should be closed down and a new official owner's thread opened where we can discuss this player, the player's potential via the newer firmware, and its overall performance. A new thread where the whole mess of this thread can be left in the past and we can discuss this player fresh?

We are direct and authorized Onkyo dealers, but not for internet sales. So i do not have them on my site. However, I just got permission to list them without prices or a shopping cart so I hope to get the HD805 up later today.

What does the coming firmware upgrade fix on the 805?
So because this thread got so derailed and ultimately got flooded with all sorts of posts that had little to do with the Onkyo, I have started a new First End Users thread where we can discuss the player and its potential, with a fresh start and without any of the confusion that got created late into this thread.

joerod and I have had a few good PMs back and forth to discuss where things got so confused and everything is completely back on track with us now. We've reconciled the misunderstandings and I look forward to him returning to the new thread.

Onkyo DV-HD805 - First End User Reports

Let's put this one to bed now that we can actually discuss this unique player.

Is this player eligible for the 5 free movie deal?
Yes, don't worry about the rebate form not listing the Onkyo DV HD805. The rebate fulfiller will honor the 5 free title rebate.

So is it known if the 805 is now discontinued in the U.S. or not?

Sad to see you go joe...

Isn't it sad how forum posting and PMing leads unbiased knowledgeable people away from posting their findings, views, ideas, or facts they find? Joe isn't the first, and certainly won't be the last... Let's grow up fellas... We're not in grammar school

surprise surprise, the italian distributor who claimed this unit was discontinued, now states it was a kind of misunderstanding due to the extremely limited suplies of the 805 and it will be back in the shops from late january 2008 ...

Probably as true as the rumors that Denon will go dual format.
