room size...

Would a room 13'11" by 17'10" with 8ft ceiling be big enough for a dedicated home theater room?

The room is actually a bonus room that is actually about 26' by 17'10", but I want to cut it in half one way so that I can still use the other half as a small game/play area.

Also what is the largest 2.35:1 screen that will fit on the 13'11" wall?

thanks...

You can certainly make a nice home theater in a room that size as long as you're realistic about screen size (asking how big is the biggest you can fit isn't a good start ) and how many people you're planning to seat in there.

What size screen is appropriate depends on how many seats, how many rows, whether you want a perf screen or not, etc.

Definitely be big enough, you could probably even do 2 rows.
My room is only 15x11 and its fine. (I like to think its 'cozy' )

I was thinking two rows of 3 seats with the back row on a riser and maybe a couple bean bags at the very front. Also was planning on most likely getting the JVC RS1, but by the time I actually get this going, something better will probably be out.

13'11" less 2x width of the border to the screen less another inch for easy installation. So about 13' 3" wide by 67.7 tall.

Then where do the speakers go? Room is awfully short for a perf screen and 2 rows, with beanbags in front without having things slammed against the back wall...

I'd think more like 9' at the most for the width.

How about In wall Triads? The question was what would FIT not what was APPROPRIATE. I would say 9.5 to 10 ft wide is appropriate. Otherwise 16:9 material will be pretty small.

I guess I should have been a bit more specific... I meant what would be more appropirate, but I also would like the largest possible even if it's not 100% optimal, maybe 90% optimal, but not crazy ridiculous so that it ruins other aspects of the theater experience. Also if I decided to go with the SMX AT screen, is there a specific distance that the screen has to be in front of the speakers. Would that not make sense for the size room I'm working with? Also the seating is really my last concern. The only seat that really matters is the one that I'll be sitting in and that would be the back row middle. I may just go with one back row 3 chair theater seating and a sectional or couch in front of that. Sorry, I know this is all very vague and generic right now. I'm just trying to gauge more of an idea of what I'm looking at for my specific space I'm working with.

thanks again...

It sounds like it may be a good idea to spend more time reading threads. I;ve been reading for over a year now and only am being my build/design process. There's just soooo much information and ideas to understand before one can even start asking the right question.

I've definately been reading alot of threads (and will continue to), but what might work for someone elses theater, might not work for mine. I figured I'd try and get some ideas about my specific situation. It's hard for me to read about what someone else did in their specific sized room and than know if it's right for my size room. It seems that there are soooo many different variables when doing a home theater, it's very easy to get confused.

here is a little drawing with an idea of what I'm looking to do... It's very general and is just the basic layout.

You are correct that there are many different variables, and that is why it's such a tough learning curve. I'd start by looking at threads that have similar size space for ideas. For example I think Mark's (BritInVA) room is about the same size. Zinema's room is also around the same length although a smidge wider.

As for how far a screen needs to be from the back wall, that largely depends on things like what sort of treatments you plan on using, size and characterists of the speakers/sub(s). Seating distance from the screen is depends on chair selection, where you want the sweet spot to be, screen size and so on. Screen size depends on personal preference, type of materials viewed (HD, 4:3, 2.35:1, etc.) and so forth.

But all of this need not be daunting. This is really a DIY site but people are also happy to share ideas and provide input. It's also possible to hire our the complicated design process to one of several pro's that hang around the forum. That may take out some of the guess work and allow you to just build it from plans.

As to the Smx and speakers. Your speakers can be from 2" to 20 " behind the Smx. Mine are 2" and I find it ideal. The bigger problems would be the size and type of your speakers and if they are back ported and so need space behind them. usually you need a min. of 18" for your Faux wall I have 24" myself which leaves me exactly 16' from the screen to the projector lens and my projector is against my back wall. My speakers by the way are REVEL M22's, C52 center. the 3 fronts are behind my Smx screen and they do have rear ports.
