A few months ago I posted here about my first bit of trouble with my 808s. The picture would go out at seemingly random times and the problem was eventually tracked down to a burnt up solder joint on one of the SMPS transformer pins.
It worked great for a few months after repairing that connection but now much more serious trouble has started. Here's the course of events that happens exactly the same way every time:
When first plugged in: Standby LED on steady and processor cycles LED blinking
Press 4 to turn on with the active input
all LEDs on G2 diag board including red come on at first
green CONV LED on the end goes out first after about 5 seconds, followed by the third LED from the left (-17) after another five seconds
erratic blinking of the CONV and -17 LEDs, high pitched noises
HTHD LED on SMPS sub board blinks too
red LED on the back of the projecter blinks red and green during this time
Shuts itself off: error LED (by the processor cycles LED) goes on
processor cycles light continues to blink
I checked all the boards I could for any signs of damaged components, traces, or solder joints and didn't find anything obvious.
The only thing I can think of to do at this point is to send the SMPS off for repair and hope that that is the problem. I'd like some confirmation on whether that is the correct course of action though before I spend the money to do it. Is it possible that this problem isn't due to a bad SMPS?
Thanks for the help. The projector is a real beauty even after ten years of hard service and I'd like to keep it running if at all possible.
