I don't think I have misunderstood that's why I found it interesting and put the question here. My calibrator have ISF level II och JKP level II trainer status (Joe Kane) and is one of few that have both those certifications in the world and he's using a Klein K-10 and a Quantum 780 and I think that pretty much makes him a expert on the subject.

His exact words were that there's another gamma mode in ISF, which results in lower gamma (higher number) that results in that you "can" loose some details. So he writes can but I get the impression he prefer not to use ISF day/night.

Not true. Me and many others are using service menu settings that we got from D-Nice/other people that have improved the overall image quality. I understand that each TV is slightly different a true calibration is the "sexier" option. But, not all of us want to do that so using some tried and true settings from people smarter than us is a good choice.

5010 is still the best panel I've seen crew, signing back in

Pretty much any of the 8G or 9G Pios still hold their own against anything out there right now. Its quite a credit to Pioneer for making such good sets that outperform TVs 3-4 years newer! SWEET!

What s2mikey said. Additionally, a while back I posted the offsets D-Nice came up with for my 5080 when he calibrated it, and as I recall at least one other person here benefited from them.

Yes - I believe I used some of your changes too or at least tried them.

Been running starter setting for european LX508/608 for like 4 years now that I got from that other forum hehe. Still think they look very good compared to default settings. Should be interesting to see when calibrating in 1-2 weeks how much they were off and what 4 years do to brightness and such. They say the panel lose some over time.

Our 6010 was recently recalibrated by UMR. He had to make a fairly large adjustment to yellow at around 5,200 hours. The 6010 was originally calibrated at 900 hours and needed to be adjusted for some loss of brightness at 2,300 hours. We pray for a long life for it on a regular basis.

Anyone is free to do what ever they want to their panel.

Whether setting changes "improve" the panel is subjective to the owner.

Calibration that includes measurements to achieve a known standard and capabilities to display PQ elements as encoded is the goal (with no personal biases).

and as such, they are holding their resale value VERY well... i sold my 111fd for only a couple hundred less than what i paid for it...

and if i could talk my wife into letting me sell the 150fd, i would imagine i could get a pretty good chunk of change for that as well...

Agreed. The OP did not indicate at all if they followed your process and wanted "settings". All of your advice has been qualified with a "use at your own risk" especially if no break in process was employed (or I may have read that incorrectly).

I was fortunate to be able to have the panel calibrated by someone like your self and the results are stunning.

Like I said before, anyone can do what ever they want to their own panel.

I had my main tuner board replaced in my pdp5080 last night and all the repairman did was to replace the board and go home.He said no adjustments were needed but my colors dont look the same.Should he have performed what i was told as a final setup to make it look right,and if so how?

A quick glance at the service manual for the 5080 doesn't appear to show that any adjustment is needed for that repair. It may be that you did lose your prior color settings in the Service Menu or settings in the User Menu as a consequence of the repair; if so you'll need to put them in again.

thanks much. just a quick note,my original setting were rh-242,gh-256,bh-240,all lows 512,they just look different.by the way,I did try the final setup and it kept saying final setup abort,power off tv.

Does anyone know if the settings posted on page 1 by D-Nice are still usable for the 5010? I have used D-nices settings since I got this set on 07 but I have noticed lately that when I watch sports (hockey especially) the color is very dull. The ice looms dark and the uniforms look washed out. This is the way it has looked since I bought it, but its just now starting to bother me. I switched the color detail to mid and the ice and players look more like they should ( Like they do in person) but it seems that low is the preferred option. Does anyone have any suggestions that would help this without switching to mid color detail? I am using the user av selection.

You're welcome. The video processor still rocks against newer models.

Your set has dimmed as time passes. D-Nice's settings were for a new display. One way to "renew" your set is to have it calibrated by D-Nice, UMR or one of the other touring calibrators that have customer reports listed in post number two using the link at the bottom of my post.

If you've never had a professional calibration, then those guys can make it better than when it was new but not calibrated.

As much as this saddens me, I have begun searching for a replacement for my 4280. Only problem is I can't find a set that looks better than this set. Haven't had much luck finding a used pioneer either (locally), also a bit apprehensive buying used.

Anyways, a bit OT, but are there any sets out now that compete with these older Pioneers? Don't want to spin this thread into something it's not so if anyone has any recommendations, feel free to pm me. Thanks.

Btw, the tv still looks fantastic, just looking for something a bit larger. And Dnice, I've been using your settings since I picked this set up and couldn't be happier.

I'm still enjoying my old 4304, moved it to the bedroom a few years ago when I bought the Kuro. Aside from the blacks not being up to the last few generation of Pioneers, it still looks fantastic and is going strong.......... a great bedroom TV with fantastic color and detail for such an older set. I too hated to see Pioneer leave the Plasma business.

The kuro is not just about black. Its VP ability to scale and process image is amazing. Even newer models have issues with SD and inverse telecine. I have also not heard better than kuro TV speakers this year. It's really a very optimal package.

If you need bigger size I suggest you wait for Jan CES and see if anything worthy comes up. Otherwise choose your poison

Fry's Electronics has the Sharp 70" and 80" for $3149 and $4999 in today ads. That is not the Elite version but that 80" is BIG.

Sound like you want the new sharp elite models or the top of the line Panny's
When pioneer stoped making Tv's sharp hired half of pioneers engineers and panny hired the other half. I hear the the new sharp elites are freakn awesome if you got the cash.

And while the new 70" and 80" 240 mhz are $3149 and $4999 at Fry's Electronics (though maybe not as good a black level as the Elites), their pricing is enticing, indeed. Those prices are versus 60" and 70" Elite TVs for $5K and $8.5K.

Not sure I like the way the Sharp's look, I'm not a fan of lcd's.

I looked at the new panny vt30's, nice sets. But while looking for new tv's I can't seem to find anything that pops like my entry level kuro. The panny's have excellent blacks but the colors just look dull, then the samsung d series has colors that have that punch I'm looking for, but the blacks are somewhat lacking. On top of that both panels have their issues.

To me it just seems like after 4 years Panasonic or Samsung should have caught up to a 8g Pioneer as far as pq goes.

Also after so many years of owning this 4280, I finally mustered up the courage to make some sm tweaks (D-nice offsets). I have been more than impressed, looks like a whole new set, in a good way.

I'm in the same boat. Want to go larger and (maybe) 3d but not seeing anything as impressive as the kuro. Focus on the vt30 pan and d8000 sammy but not ready to give up the kuro yet. Need to demo more I guess.

I found a used 50" 110fd, might take a look at it. Seems like the price is decent, and since I'm happy with the pq of my 4280, the 110 should satisfy without having to splurge for a 9g.

What's a reasonable amount of hours for these sets when shopping used, or things I should look for?
