Dell W4201C

Hello All, I've got a 1 year old Dell W4201C that has a 1 1/2" vertical bar just right of center that started when I turned it on last week. It was first 2 1/3" but after leaving it unplugged over night has now stuck with the narrower size.

To the left, 2 widths, the picture is smeared like you used to see on a CRT with overscan.

On the Self test, MTV312(R) offset:80h fails with a value of FFFF. It sometimes passes with 105? (the black bar gets in the way of the last byte).

I'm thinking the problem is with the driver, or a connection between boards but would like any help ya'll might have.

Thanks,
LL

John here, customer advocate at Dell headquarters.

That picture was very informative. When performing a self-test on these TVs, the content of the test itself is not so important as whether or not the problem is still present in the test screen. When it is, that confirms that there is a hardware problem with the TV itself, and it isn't an input problem.

This would be a time where you'd want to contact our support representatives and take advantage of your service contract. This TV has suffered from a premature failure, and needs to be replaced.

Contact me here if you have any questions, or if you'd rather email, use our public inbox:

Thanks John, will do. By the way, is there a service manual available for this guy?

Sure:

support.dell(dot)com/support/edocs/systems/w4201c/

It wouldn't let me link directly, as the board has a bias against newbies including links in their posts.

I am sure you know what to do with that.

Thanks John,

The link you sent gives me access to the owner's manual and a setup chart which shows the connections. What I'm looking for is a service manual that has schematics and internal wiring charts.

This is the 2nd replacement TV for 3 in a year and I'm sure I won't be lucky enough to get another one from Dell. I'm thinking that if I've got a service manual in hand, the TV might be scared enough to keep working. Even if it's not, I'd have the information needed to repair it.

Hi John,

What happened? Did you forget about me?

Thanks,
Dan
