Acoustic Panels on the Cheap?

Here is my plan for cheap acoustic panels. Please let me know if these should work and not look too terrible.

1: Cut sheets of 1/4" plywood to 2'x4' and use spray adhesive to attach 2" Roxul AFB Mineral Wool.
2: Wrap some cotton quilting around and staple on the back.
3: Wrap some finishing material around and staple on the back.

Would using Ownens Corning 703 make much difference. It costs nearly twice as much as the mineral wool.

I would make bass traps using the super-chunk corner method in the corners and make a frame to string cloth over to hide the mineral wool.

Does this plan sound like it would work? Any flaws you can see?

that's exactly how I made mine...but I used 1/8" Luon

Roxul AFB Mineral Wool and Owens Corning 703 are both about 3 pcf. At this density, mineral wool performs virtually identically to fiberglass.

Did they make a big difference in your room?

If you want to know how your insulation compares to others - look on BasementBob's resource page here - he also has links to various DIY designs.

http://www.bobgolds.com/AbsorptionCoefficients.htm

The AFB is actually a bit less dense than OC703 - and has less performance at 250Hz but more at 125Hz compared to OC703. The AFB is more of a batt material - Roxul also sells more rigid boards - so with the AFB a backing board makes sense. Your front corners will not be that sharp looking as the stretched fabric will crush them. So while it may be cheaper insulation - you should consider how much the board costs vs. a simpler frame and a more rigid insulation.

Product thickness density 125hz 250hz 500hz 1000hz 2000hz 4000hz NRC
AFB 2" (51mm) 2.5 pcf (40 kg/m3) 0.28 0.60 1.09 1.09 1.07 1.07 0.95

Product thickness mounting density 125hz 250hz 500hz 1000hz 2000hz 4000hz NRC
703, plain 2" (51mm) on wall 3.0 pcf (48 kg/m3) 0.17 0.86 1.14 1.07 1.02 0.98 1.00

yes...certainly worth the effort...I also made bass traps using 2 and 3 sheets of 2" 703.

I think this will work fine, but if you plan on straddling corners you want to cut out the back so sound can go through it. The solid wood back is going to not make it work right.

Would these work well as bass traps straddling the corner if I cut out most of the backs? Could I use the spray advesive to make multiple layers of the Mineral wool to make the traps 4 or 6 inches deep?

Correct! I was thinking of the thinner (1" and 1 1/2") Roxul AFB, which is 3 pcf.
