Refurbished Sharp LC46D62U??

So in my online browsing I came across a refurbished Sharp LC46D62U... I have never considered purchasing a refurbished unit now that I've seen it I'd be lying if I said I wasn't thinking about it.

I guess my question is... Refurbished... obviously it was returned for a reason. In my mind, the most likely reason would be banding, and with Sharp quality control issues with the 62Us I'd wonder if a certain amount of banding was "acceptable" when checking over the unit for defects.

Now, I know in certain cases a refurbished unit can be an even better bet than a new one... In the case of many Dell monitors, for instance, you can basically be assured that you're getting a monitor that works. Has anyone had any experience with refurbished 62Us? Or refurbished units of any kind, for that matter?

I'm very curious, and any information would be greatly appreciated.

It depends on how much is that refurb Sharp! Also, check the return policy and read the fine prints carefully to see if you can return it if there is a problem with the set. Otherwise, grab a new one from Costco for decent price with good return policy.

It's actually a pretty awesome price. I know we can't discuss numbers on here, but I think I can say I saw the unit linked on Dealcatcher.com this afternoon

It is quite a bit cheaper than even Costco's units on sale. I had recently settled on waiting until later in the year to pick up my search for an HDTV again, but stumbling onto this unit really made me think again.

Regarding their return policy, however... it is a web deal, so I'd assume any returns would have to go through Sharp, which could be a major hassle. I really don't want to purchase online, but sometimes the deals are just much too attractive to ignore!

With the history of this model there is no way I would purchase a refurb. Sounds like you're not too keen on playing the return game with Sharp due to the hassle, so I don't think this is the way to go. For your peace of mind, wait until you can either afford a model locally or one not known to have a consistent issue.

That's probably some pretty sound advice, Jim. It was tempting on first review, but like you said, considering the history of Sharp and the 62U it's probably not the safest bet.... but it sure is a tempting value, haha.
