Yup, that happened to me as well not long into completion of my first build. It just sucks, I tell you. You'll be back before you know it.

I actually approached a second sub with the Mrs. not too long ago. Ummmmm.......that went over like the proverbial lead balloon..........I would LOVE to have multiple subs, but I think for the next one I will venture into the DIY realm

Yup me too. Cheap and fast. However there is usually a rule about that. If it's cheap it us usually not fast. If its fast it's usually not cheap. I have been impressed with Rythmik's CS so far, and on the owners forum. Brian is "our kind of guy, an enthusiast's enthusiast. I'm sure he will take care of me.

Ah yeah......I actually googled them. They are on sale right now. If I buy I can save over 2k on the pair. Of course even on sale the two of those subs come close to my ENTIRE equipment budget for the theater. eek.gif I'm actually very happy with my Rythmik. It is a great performer and I have a positive attitude that all will be right as rain soon enough. Funny you should mention the glass half full, as I am very much that type of person. I was just majorly bummed when I posted.

The Mrs did not take the news too well though. The funny thing is she is always complaining about the LFE when she is upstairs, and the theater is in operation. Then she mentioned that she was going to have a girls movie night with the BR premier of the last installment of the Twilight series and she is bummed about the sub not working. I then replied that she should be just fine as those movies are crap and don't have any worth while LFE so it's all good. She was less than amused! Love you honey!

Ah good times. Now it's just the waiting game.

Thanks for all the replies and support!

Bud

Thanks Bud. It does. The weird thing is I would have expected some warning, bottoming out, clipping or something. It never did indicate to me that it was being overworked at all. It was actually sounding really good. Like I stated before though, I'm happy with Rythmik and the CS. One of the main reasons why I chose the equipment I did was for the reputation of the companies taking care of their customers. Still a bummer though. Been a while since I have checked in on your thread, will have to do that.

Sorry to hear that RT. You could always just bite the bullet and go the Danley DTS10 for your room. Its a monster!
Seems pretty simple to me. You tell Mrs. RT it's either a new sub (or two!) or a biometric lock.

I feel your pain. I just went through the blown driver routine on my SVS Cylinder. Was not near as bad as I feared. Found a TC Sounds replacement driver at Parts Express and within a week had everything back up and running. Pretty simple replacement procedure. Hope yours is as easy.

Good luck!
Hopefully it can be fixed an all will be well again, if not you have already demoed and Orbit shifter.... biggrin.gif
post #1927 of 2037
Sorry to hear about your sub RT.

I had an amp go out on my Velodyne. They had an exchange program where they had me back online within 3 days. I sent mine back and once they had the tracking number, they sent out a replacement. Could be as simple as that.
I'm sorry to hear about you sub RT. Hopefully it can be fixed without any problems.

I agree with the others though; it sounds like it is time for an upgrade. Perhaps something like this?

Man that sucks. Hopefully you can get it resolved quickly. No LFE while watching a movie kills the experience.

Hey guys.....thanks for the support. Vik, I appreciate the offer. I have a Klipsch in the other room that I could press into service if necessary.

I did get an update from Brian at Rythmik. He read my info and determined that my driver is shot. He stated he was also concerned that the amp may have been damaged as well. Brian stated to fix the situation I would need to remove the driver and amp, send the amp to him for a thorough once over and he would send the amp back with a new driver. I pay shipping each way which will (In Brian's estimation) be about 60 bucks total. I would say that is a great solution to the problem. Kudos to Brian and Rythmik. That is why I love this forum and these focused ID type of companies. They really are geared to taking care of their customer(s).

I will keep you all posted on how it goes and share some pics of the surgery when it happens.

That's great, how old was the sub?

I actually took delivery on 2/23/2012, so the sub is right at a year old. I actually had to go back and check my thread as I thought it was really close to a year, but was not 100% sure. I took delivery of a great many things there at the end, and it is hard to remember what came when. I know that I had to wait the longest for my center channel to arrive.

Currently I'm waiting to hear from Brian on the shipping specifics and directions for the removal of the components. Again I can't say enough good things about Rythmik.

Well I received the directions and the go ahead from Brian Ding at Rythmik to pull the amp and the driver. I had planned on pulling the parts this morning, but my oldest had a movie night with about 10 kids (hmmm......my theater only holds 7...anyway) I fell asleep before they all left and woke up to three additional kids at the house so as consideration to those guys I just let them sleep. With the rest of my day filled with other obligations looks like tomorrow might be the day surgery is performed.

I did move my little 10" Klipsch in there as a temp fix, but there just really is no comparison at all.

I promise I will provide pics of the process.

Does it include some type of biometric anything? If so I'm not interested! tongue.gif

Nope probably not. That's ok though, gotta be remembered for something right?

Well anyway, I got the directions from Brian at Rythmik and it was all straight forward. A little tip though. Did you know that a subwoofer is powered by a voice coil? Yup, and did you also know this voice coil is a really big magnet? Well it is. Do you know what that means? It means that it is really hard to use pliers around the speaker binding posts because the pliers seemingly always end up on the magnet. Go figure.

All kidding aside it was pretty easy and straightforward and in about 10 minutes I had the amp and driver removed. Don't know what I was expecting though as I was a little let down when I peered inside. Kind of like a magic trick once you know how it's done it looses its luster. I was half expecting to see all kinds of stuff in there along with a clan of little people like in the MIB movies that chant "All hail RTROSE, all hail RTROSE", nothing like that is or was in there. I guess the magic is actually in the electronics.

Here are a few pics of the process.

Size comparison for my "real" sub vs. the current stand in.

Tools of the trade.

Successful removal of the amp.

Successful removal of the driver. Hello.......hello........hello.......hello...............

Another size comparison.

Now just to ship the amp off for inspection.

Cool good going RT! I did open some expensive speakers in the last few years and i got the same feeling you got when i peered inside. This experience got me to respect a lot of DIY offerings and a few Internet Direct companies like Seaton and JTR , Rythmik etc Price/performance wise. I also became more guarded towards marketing hype and looks over performance of lots of products from so called High End companies.

Isn't this the Slow As Molasses thread? You're supposed to leave the new amp in your garage until you forget about it, only to rediscover it when cleaning out the garage in late summer. THEN it should be installed!! biggrin.gif

Of course I am just breaking your balls a bit. Thanks for sharing the odyssey of your subwoofer fix. It look like you will be back to "woofing" soon!

It is and normally that IS my speed, but I miss my sub, so I have stepped my game a little. wink.gif

On another front I do need some advice. I'm looking at popcorn machines and would like to stay under $300.00 bucks. I have quickly scanned the popcorn machine thread in the accessories thread once upon a time, but it has been awhile since doing so. Your input would be greatly appreciated.

Hi RT,

Seems ive been slack about checking in, i missed all the sub fun!

That does suck, and at least theyre replacing the parts. Like you said though youd expect a commercial sub to complain before letting out the magic smoke like that.....

If you toasted the VC on the driver with program material(not sine waves) IMO either the driver was defective or the design was..... Just sayin. IMO they should have covered shipping at least ONE way!

If the amp is toast, well, electric components go bad, it happens.

If you decide to DIY AVS has a wonderful community of folks eager to help you double your performance for half the cost of a commercial sub.

Cheers,

Nicholas

Hey Nick,

Thanks for stopping by. Every once in a while if you don't check in you'll miss something round here! I hear ya on the sub, but Brian with Rythmik has been great so I can't complain. Would it be great yes, but I'm looking at the fact for shipping charges I will basically have a new sub again. It's all good.

I am seriously considering doing a DIY sub at some point. Maybe even a "folded horn" type. biggrin.gif

If you have a Costco membership, get the 8oz unit with cart from Costco. It's about $225 or so, if memory serves. I've had mine for 3 years and it's been a champ!

Here's a link: http://www.costco.com/Maxi-Matic%C2%AE-8-oz-Deluxe-Popcorn-Trolley.product.100015756.html

They will even ship it to your house!

When you get ready for popcorn recipes, let me know. I've been through most types of popcorn and have a favorite... wink.gif

I believe that is the same popper I have. When I use it, it's great. It's kind of burried in the garage right now, so I can't get to it. Last weekend while we were getting ready to watch Date Night, I'm getting ready to make some, uh, microwave popcorn and I ask my son if he wants any. The wise guy says, "Oh, you mean from the REAL popcorn machine that you haven't used in ages because you can't get to it?" A real chip off the 'ol block!

So far, the machine has been great.

Cj - come on, man, spill!

Hey RT. There are lots of different poppers out there, many of which fit your budget. Are you looking to set one on a countertop or would you prefer a separate cart? There are also many, many different styles and colors to choose from. These decisions aside, I have heard many, many times that you want to go with the 8 oz. hopper at a minimum and not the 4oz. or 6 oz. hopper which will force you into multiple batches for anything beyond two people. They make larger ones, but for home use 8 oz. should be plenty in most situations.

I have been scoping these machines for a while and here is the one I am looking at from the Great Northern Popcorn Company: http://www.ebay.com/itm/290805383761?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649

This has all the features of a commercial unit only scaled down for residential use. So you end up with a lot of features that typically aren't found in this price range such as metal gearing (for the mechanisms), a heating element underneath the popcorn (known as a warming deck), a warmer light and heavy-duty thicker-gauge construction with critical components powder coated for durability. It also has a five year warranty, so to me this is my strongest contender at $239.97 delivered.

If you would like to see more options, let me know...but this is the best value machine around IMHO.

Here is their full line which shows different styles, including those on carts, and different sizes: http://www.greatnorthernpopcorn.com/c-11-popcorn-machines.aspx

Let me (us) know your thoughts!

I'll be looking at Great Northern as well. I'm a popcorn nut can could kill 3-4oz myself so I was looking at 6 or 8oz.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the input on the poppers. I have basically narrowed it down to these two poppers.

This one.

and

This one.

I leaning very heavily towards the Great Northern popper.

Thoughts on these two contenders?
