HD-DVD Claims Next-Gen Victory

The battle over which console is superior is nothing compared to the battle over which high definition disc format is best, and the simmering battle between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD has heated up again today with the announcment from The North American HD DVD Promotional Group that HD-DVD now accounts for 60% of the standalone high definition disc player market.

Of course, The North American HD DVD Promotional Group is devoted to promoting HD DVD (says so in their name!) so you have to take the "news" with a huge grain of proverbial salt, but...

The group also said Toshiba's HD-A2 is the "best-selling next-gen DVD player model to date," and over 75,000 HD DVDs were sold in the final week of May.

HD DVD did not claim any such victory. That is simply the title that "sjohnson" chose for his title. What HD DVD noted was that they're selling more standalone HD DVD players than Blu-ray.

You should know by now that these brief claims of superiority won't mean much when the other camp flips the numbers around and cranks out a jaw dropping figure of its own, but the North American HD DVD Promotional Group has recently announced that it's currently livin' the high life. Supposedly, standalone HD DVD players now hold 60-percent of the market share amongst standalone high-definition disc players, and the recent "aggressive spring retail and marketing campaigns" are to thank. Unsurprisingly, Toshiba's heavily (albeit momentarily) discounted HD-A2 was dubbed the "best-selling next-gen DVD player model to date," and we were even told that over 75,000 HD DVD titles were sold in the final week of May alone. The countdown for the Blu-ray rebuttal starts... now.

The writer just made up the headline.

Personally, I think Bagdad Bob has found gainful employment working PR for both sides.

I have an HD-DVD player, and and considering a BR player so I would consider myself neutral, but the level of BS being spun out of both sides is amazing.

Consumers Drive Record Sales of HD DVD Players to Capture 60% of HD Set-Top Market

HD DVD Achieves Highest Attach Rate of Any Next-Gen Format

LOS ANGELES, June 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Three weeks into its aggressive
spring retail and marketing campaigns, the North American HD DVD
Promotional Group today announced HD DVD is significantly ahead in the
dedicated consumer electronics player market with 60% of all high
definition set-top players sold. At the same time, high definition movie
sales for HD DVD reached an all time high for the month of May, exceeding
75,000 movies the last week of May alone.
Overall high definition sales hit a record last week as well, hitting
$5.2 million in actual consumer spending, which was 31% higher than the
previous record for the two formats. This highlights the growing consumer
appetite for HD content across the board.
Sales of dedicated consumer electronics players are a critical
indicator in the adoption of the high definition formats, given the high
attach rates to these players. With the successive price drops by Toshiba,
weekly player sales doubled in April when the price dropped from $499 to
$399, doubled again during the first week of the latest promotion in late
May, and increased again last week.
"Toshiba's latest promotional efforts are clearly resonating with
consumers and showing that price is king when it comes to hardware," said
Craig Kornblau, chairman of the North American HD DVD Promotional Group.
"Behind the increase in sales for hardware and movies, you're seeing
fundamentally lower manufacturing costs and ease of authoring for HD DVD.
That's the type of model that can scale."
Consumers have purchased 150,000 dedicated HD DVD consumer electronics
players which are holding a 4 to 1 movie attach rate over competing
formats. The Toshiba HD-A2 model has also reached the top-seller mark among
all DVD players on Amazon.com, and is officially the best-selling next-gen
DVD player model to date.

What's humorous about May is that Sony sold ~81k PS3's *TOTAL* in may in the US.

Ouch.
You know what is even funnier than that? Hardly anyone is using them to watch movies!
Actually, what's funny about that is that the PS3's game attach rate is almost as low as their video attach rate.

I agree.... the OP and or "sjohnson" are way off base saying that HD-DVD claimed victory. They said they own 60% of the standalone market. That percentage is actually down from early in the year when Blu-Ray had sold hardly any standalone units. The PS3 isn't being counted in those totals.

But whos to believe anything anyway. Sony said the format war is over. Then they claimed victory, now they are saying the battle has just begun, and then they said they have sold 100,000 standalone units which is interesting because if they sold 100,000, then that would mean Panasonic, Pioneer, and Samsung has sold virtually none.

Disney and Sony got into a nasty fight several weeks ago with both claiming the other was fabricating box office numbers for Spiderman 3 and POTC Worlds End. I don't really put a lot of faith in anything these corporations report anymore. Enron has already proven that fabricating numbers and flat out lying to employees, stockholders, and consumers is far more profitable as long as you don't get caught.

And yet Planet Earth HD DVD has held the top next-gen spot on amazon for how long?

I wouldn't say "humbled". If The Matrix vs POTC was any indication it's a lot closer than you think. 41k compared to 47k when BR has better than a 10:1 install base with the PS3 included.

What is going to tell, eventually, is as the PS3 keeps sucking wind (88k sold 2months ago, 81k last month) and as HD-DVD picks up steam, you'll start seeing momentum going the other way.

Think of it this way, apparently the attachment rate for a PS3 is 20%, or 1 BR disc sold to a PS3 owner for every 5 HD-DVD discs sold to an HD-DVD owner. If that remains true, then 80k PS3's is only worth 16k stand-alone HD-DVD players.

That means that as long as HD-DVD outsells BR stand-alones by 16k, then they are keeping pace, on an incremental basis, with BR. This doesn't even take into account the HD-DVD player for the X-Box, which probably has a higher attachment rate than the PS3, since people who are buying it are buying it to play HD-DVD discs.

Furthermore, as the price of HD-DVD players stays low while BR stand-alones stay high, it'll eventually turn into a flip-flopped race. Frankly, once you look at the numbers and ignore the fudd, HD-DVD will win. The combination of the PS3 sucking and cheap HD-DVD players will eventually tip the scales.

Thank you, pier0188, for bringing the science. I actually felt myself starting to devolve for a second there before I read your post.

I also know of a few, but the main reason for them not using the player is the fact that none own an HDTV.

Which, in my opinion, is why I believe the PS3 cannot keep Blu Ray far ahead of HD DVD.
