5.1 + receiver: yamaha, onkyo, jbl, focal? Please help

Thread Starter
Hi,

I'm currently looking to buy my first surround receiver and 5.1 speakers. Would like your opinion on my proposed short list. Will be used 60% movies, 20% games, 20% music.

Am currently looking at these receivers:

- Yamaha RXV1700
- Onkyo TX-SR674E or TX-SR804E
- Harman Kardon AVR645 (although a bit above my price level)

And these speakers:

- JBL CSS set (4x CST55, 1x CSS55, 1x CSS10)
- Focal JMLabs Chorus V (2x 714V or 726V (latter a bit expensive), 2x 705V, 1x CC700V, 1x SW700V)
- Yamaha 525 A-PMD Series (2x NS-525F, 2x NS-M525, 1x NS-C525, 1x YST-SW515)

Currently i'm preferring the 1700 receiver (has upconversion and 1080p) but it the most expensive while the onkyo has almost the same specs. Listened to a lot of speakers and those are currently within my price range and I like them.

Would be great to have your view on these set-ups, or some experiences. Also, if you could rule out some stuff, or just compare strengths, weaknesses.. would be fantastic! I'm just somebody who has a hard time choosing and i've been looking at stuff for weeks now .

Yamaha's amps are usualy better quality than onkyo but still at a good price, and for the speakers go into store with music you know (cd or ipod) and listen. speakers are a individual choice.

Boon,

I'm in your exact same boat and have been auditioning speakers in Vancouver Canada who has limited options as far as decent demo rooms in my option. What I've been leaning towards of late is the Focal Chorus 726 V. I listen to the one just below the 726 V and thought it was a little thin. I like the fullness of the 726 V. I listen to at Commercial Electronics in Vancouver and it was powered with a Pioneer Elite receiver. I have been seriously consider purchasing the Onkyo 875 as my power plant receiver. I recently read a review in a stero magazine where it was rated a product of the year in teh receiver category. As far a speakers I've listen to Boston accoustic, energy, polk and klipsch. The boston where not deep enough in the bass. The enegy speaker were nice but i was listening to them with a sub so i could really get a read on them. Polk were not my style and the klipsch felt too bright for my liking. They all are two ways with horns and again not my style for my ears. Focal 726 V are where I'm left at the moment. What are your thoughts? Any advice or feedback would be appericiate because as stated I'm in the same boat.

Thanks,
Christian

You know, it's ok to make your own thread on this board for something like this.
