Sony DG910 or DG1000, which one? Any opinions?

Hey guys

I have narrowed my list of AVRs to the sony line. The DG910 or DG1000 are at the top of the list. I am having a hard time isolating the differences between the models. Does anyone know? I have finally moved past the idea that I need onboard truehd and dts hd processing because when I finally chose my HD format, most have HD audio processing in the players, correct? My set up includes an xbox 360 elite (so I use HDMI) and an 50in samsung DLP 720P display.

Between those two models, which would be better for me and why?

I heard something scary about these models from a review on another site. The review stated that while the DG1000 can upconvert signals, it only applies to 480i to 480p. He claimed that anything 720p or above will be DOWNCONVERTED to 480p when outputted via HDMI. That, if true, is ridiculous. Anyways, anyone know if that is true?

Thanks for any opinions on the matter!!

The STR-DG910 - has digtal media port, connectors for the new sony accesories network audio streaming and portable audio including iPod. Not there in the 1000.

The concerns you noted in downscaling is not in the 910.

The 910 has no multi channel analog no S-video connectors.

3 HDMI ports on the 910. No idea on the 1000.

No idea on the OSD of the 1000 but the 910 OSD is to me very akward if this matters to you.

910 takes care of your 1080/60p and 1080/24 rates. No idea on the 1000.

PCM 5.1 to 7.1 processing.

910 is greener than 1000.

910 Remote will discourage you.

No HDMI issues seen so far on the 910. No idea on the 1000.

910 sound to me is very good.

Are you stuck on Sony? The new Onkyo receivers are very very good.

You know, I have gone back and forth between the new Onkyo line ( I have a tx-sr502 now) and the sonys a million times. The problem is while the sr605 has onboard HD audio decoding, it does not do 7.1 from 5.1. I only have 5.1 right now, but i plan to upgrade to 7.1 in the very near future. In addition, arent there some issues with its HDMI upscaling?

Shoot....the 605 doesnt look too bad...

This thread here brings up some issues with it, problems witht he 605 from actual owners (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=841348) Anyone know if those are substantial claims....

Furthermore, I dont understand Onkyo's line up, as it seems that the sr605 is actually better than the more expensive 674 (hdmi 1.3, trueHD DTS HD)...Why is that?

now I guess the Onkyos are back into the running....

I own a DG1000. It's well built, hefty (35 lbs), versatile and possesses excellent connectivity. A little searching will turn up threads that document that the DG1000 uses many Sony ES-line components (like power supplies). I've even seen it described as an unbadged ES. Am I a DG1000 fan? Absolutely .

I can tell you for a fact that your concern about the claims related to what the DG1000 does/doesn't do for signal conversion are unfounded. The person who wrote the review you saw is incorrect.

Here are the main features the DG1000 has that the DG910 does not have:
  • remote that's learns as well as being programmable
  • 7.1 pre-outs so that it can be used as a pre/pro connected to external amp
  • 7.1 analog inputs that accept analog signals of the new HD audio formats from HD-DVD/BluRay players with analog outputs
  • phono input
  • configured so that images/audio can be viewed/heard in a second zone
  • ability to turn video conversion ON or OFF
  • if video conversion is ON, the ability to turn deinterlacing ON or OFF
  • conversion of analog video signals to both higher and lower formats (EXAMPLE: component video converted to digital HDMI and simultaneously available as s-video and composite video)
  • s-video inputs/outputs
  • 2 more optical/1 more coax audio inputs on back panel
  • optical audio output on back panel
  • s-video and optical audio inputs on front panel

BTW, here are links to the DG1000 and DG910 manuals - a little light reading BEFORE you lay down your hard earned cash.

Samsurd,

I checked out the manual for the DG1000. It seems to imply that it will convert component signals to HDMI only if they are 480i. Can you confirm this? In other words, if I have a 720p signal coming into the receiver through component (i.e. xbox 360), can one send the video signal out to the TV through HDMI? If so, what resolution will it have?

Thanks

Samsurd,

Upon further reading, it seems that if you set video convert and progressive out both to ON, you can indeed send component video signals other than 480i our via HDMI (see page 35). Can you confirm this?

Sorry for all the questions. I appreciate your help with the DG1000 on this and other threads. I am almost totally decided on buying this receiver, I just want to make sure I have done my homework.

Yes, 720p. The conversion of the analog video signal to digital (so it can be transmitted via HDMI) does not change the resolution of the input signal >> resolution in = resolution out.

But the Sony TDM-IP1 iPod Dock which connects through the proprietary Sony Digital Media Port will NOT work with the STR-DG1000? Please tell me I'm mistaken...

If I told you that I'd be lying to you.

You can hook an MP3 player to the DG1000 (or any other receiver, for that matter) using a "Y" cable connected from the headphone output of the player to one of the stereo audio inputs (front or rear). The real question in my mind is why would anyone want to play lousy (IMO) audio through a good receiver?

I've returned the Onkyo 574 and decided to narrow down to the Sony 910 and Yamaha V661 since the different is about $20-30US in price. Let me know the pros and cons. Thanks in advance.

You are comparing this year's 605 with last year's 674. That is why you are confused. All the models ending with a 5 are from this year - 505, 605, 705, 805, 875, 905. There is a thread just for these receivers. Also, some people were not that impressed with the 605's sound (too bright). Many people have been very impressed with H/K 247's sound (look at the threads). I actually had the 247 for 30 days - and was very impressed. The only reason I returned it was the 720p limitation on the video scaling and the fact you cannot turn off the scaling. 1080i/p is passed through though. I went with H/K 745 refurb and love it.

Does the DG1000 accept 1080p over component and pass it out via HDMI ?(hoping i can continue to run the x360 in 1080p if i get this receiver)
good info samsurd..I have the 1000 and I am still learning about how to hook everything up to it. I never was able to get my 360 to work thru the receiver inputs. I guess I should look thru the manual again.

Just for your info my Power Supply has an ES sticker on it. I was surprised to see it when looking down into the receiver. I was going to buy the ES-3200 but decided to save a few bucks and get the 1000. When I saw the ES sticker I was pretty happy. I had heard the rumors and what I saw pretty much confirmed it.

What are the benefits of being able to turn the video conversion/deinterlacing on and off? I am trying to decide on a receiver that will allow a one cord HDMI connection to my TV and will still allow me to use whatever aspect ratio setting (Wide, Zoom, Cinema, et all) my TV monitor allows. In other words, if I want to watch a 4:3 standard def signal using my TV's "Zoom" setting, I want the receiver not to interfere with this. Thanks for the help.

I would love to know if the DG910 or DG1000 would take 1080p from component and pass via HDMI out in 1080p also.

bump...

I want to know this also. Any negative effect of running the component through the reciever? I've always ran my video directly to the tv in the past.

I have 360 and my sammy dlp accepts 1080p, so i don't want to ruin this by running through the receiver.

I am looking at the DG1000 to replace my old Yamaha (it is about 12 years old).

Your post seems to answer my questions but I want to make sure and I have a few others that you may know (I read the manual but it is a bit confusing to me).

1. I can feed HDMI, component HD (1080i and 720p sources) and an S-video into the DG1000 and have it all come out the HDMI output at the original resolution (with the S-video going from 480i to 480p). Correct?

2. The remote is learning. Does it have a limit or are all buttons learning? I tend to like to customize my remotes quite a bit.

3. How many devices can the remote control? Choosing the component you want to control also tells the DG1000 to go to the input?

4. You mention dual zone video. Is that one zone audio and one video or can both be independent video? I am assuming that zone 2 video is 480i from the hookup diagram. I am thinking of using it for picture and picture. Is that possible? Do the inputs for it need to be 480i or can it take the component/HDMI inputs and down convert them?

Thanks in advance for any answers.

From what Ive read, neither the 910 or the 1000 for that matter do post PCM processing (PLIIx). Please somebody confirm this?

Does anybody have any input into why the version I just purchased does NOT have the "ES" sticker on the power supply? It looks similar to the model in the store, but is turned sideways in the unit. Both versions are made by KGCOMP, but the model number appears to differ. The store version with the ES markings is 1-445-040-01, mine is 1-445-040-12.

No help from the Sony people.
