first time builiding my own cables.

After many months of reading what other people have done here on AVS I am going to attempt making my own 3.5mm to rca patch cable. Can anyone give advice if they have tried this themselves? I have ordered up what I think I need from monoprice and partsexpress, anyone found a way to connect the single line for the 3.5mm jack to the double line of the rca stereo connects? Short of shrink tube, and a cable jacket I was not able to find much else to create a "clean" look. your input if any is appreciated.

Yes I am indeed trying to make a stereo splitter. I got my 3.5 mm jack (x2) and cable jackets to connect the single line from the 3.5 jack to the stereo rca inputs. I have bought two of everything that way when I mess up my first attempt I can try again. I was thinking of buying some of the wrap you cut with a hot knife. Does anyone have any experience with using this product, if so what should I know before ordering? Thanks.

what would be the ideal type of cable to mate between the individual left and right stereo lines and the 3.5mm head? What I was thinking of doing was cutting in half the rca stereo cable. I would then connect the 3.5 mm head to the cut end of the rca cable half. When I started to look at the 3.5 plug it became obvious that the shielded line of the rca cable will not fit the opening of the 3.5 plug. the conclusion is to use a single line into the 3.5 plug, but what type of cable? I was thinking of stripping back much of the rca line and simply using a a cable jacket run the bare wires into the cable jacket then into the 3.5mm jack. Would the loss of shielded line result in loss of sound quality? maybe none of this makes sense, Pictures would help but as I am at the office I am unable to load anything.

I very well may be stupid........ Is the ground/sheild soldered directly to the rca solder connection along with the signal channel onto the same "post"? I bought the dayton audio locking rca plugs they are sort of a knock off of the more expensive WBT locking rca connectors. I know that my lack of electrical wiring is causing my confusion but based on the 3.5 mini head jack I see a left, right, and ground "post" to solder my respective wires too. On the RCA side only a single "post" for the audio signal is available. I understand only one ground connection needs to be made on the rca side. Please help.
