pioneer 5080 or 6070

Well this week I finally have to go out and buy my tv...so I've narrowed it down to either the 5080 or the 6070.

I really like the bigger screen obviously and my living room is pretty large...I'll probably sit between 10-14 feet away. Is the 5080's image quality that much better? I don't mind going down in size if the pic quality is alot better...I don't have any stores around me that have them set up so I could compare. The only ones that are set up are the 5070 and the 6070's.

the 5080 will have a better pic than the 6070 BUT unless you have them side by side you will not be noticing it. the 6070 is an excellent plasma in its own right. you could easily be enjoying the size of the 6070 over the better pq of the 5080. either one is a good choice. or wait till late august or sept and save some more $$ and get the 6010.

100% with dssturbo1 on this one. It might be tough getting the 6070HD closer to Sept.

Yea you're probably right...bigger is usually better.

I just keep hearing so much good stuff about the 5080 and how it makes the 5070 look so bad...I wish I could get them both in my living room side by side so I can decide which one to keep.

Anybody know the forum sponsors return policies? If I get a 6070 and after a few days decide it's too big and go for a better pq with the 5080, will they exchange it? I have to order the set tommorow...and I know I can find out when I call tomm, but I'm just curious now.

if you got the 6070 very doubtful you would return it .

But usually to return a set bought online that does not have a known problem/issue would require a restocking fee and you paying the return freight. different from a b&m store like bb or cc that may have a 30 day return no matter what policy but the trade off is the selling price is usually higher and you pay state tax.

I am currently ifacing the same dilema as the original poster of this thread, with the exception that if I buy the 6070 I could return it without restocking fees or shipping. As long as it's within 30 days.

In your opinion does size trump picture quality? I do watch some HD programming, but a majority of my viewing is SD. How does SD look on the 6070? Is the signal processor comparable to the 5070? Or since its a larger screen does the not great quality of SD get magnified? Any insight would be appreciated as the 6070 are selling out fast. Thanks!

Well the original poster is happy I know just look at his history of posts The only difference is that he didn't pay as much of a premium as you will to get the 30 day policy. But no matter which one you go with you will be happy.

It really depends. The new black level is very very important to some. I say, sit in a dark room with a 6070, or a Panasonic or whatever... look at a 0ire signal and some really dark scenes. Can you live with black looking like that?

If so, 6070 all the way. If not?

5080.

Would black level be the only benefit of a 5080? Is there no change to the way it handles SD compared to the 6070? My only other concern would be the fact the two tvs have the same resolution, but obviously the 6070 is much larger. Does the size negatively affect the picture?

Do you watch in complete darkness?
That is the only situation where you would want the 5080 over the 6070.

I always watch with some low level ambient lighting. Watching any tv in complete darkness causes eyestrain for me. The wall behind the tv is also a pale yellow.

Between that and the ambient lighting, black level is not an issue. In most viewing situations with this type of setup black bars appear to blend into the bezel. If in complete darkness, they do not, but even then it's not distracting.

60" is very easy to get used to. If going from a 42" you will be in awe of the size for a couple of days only!

I'm not a black level junkie and usually have atleast a small amount of light in the room to prevent eyestrain. I've viewed SD on a 5070 and it was acceptable. But will it comparable on the 6070? Also, can anyone explain whether the 768p resolution on the 6070 magnifies imperfections in the picture. Is SDE an issue? I sit about 10-12 feet away from the screen.

At that distance, SDE should not be an issue unless you have very acute eyesight. Yes a larger screen will magnify imperfections.

It's a tough choice and one I am sure more that one AVSer is going through. Perhaps you can scoot up a bit closer to a 50" and resolve the dilemma. I know I would want the viewing angle of a 60" from that distance, at least for many movies.

Cheers,

Gary

SD is more than acceptable on the 6070.

For me, SDE is apparent <=5'. I sit 8-11' away.

Unless you can spring for the 6010 (much more expensive, but the new blacks AND 1080P), I'd get the 6070. At that distance, the bigger panel I believe would keep you happier than the difference in saturation/black levels.

The 5070 doesn't look bad. It looks great!

It might not look as great as a 5080, but that's as far as I would go.

Plus the 5070's are all gone But they are considering the 6070HD a current model still.

Yea I set up the 6070HD this weekend...it looks amazing! I'm sitting about 12' away from the TV and I'm really happy I decided to go with the bigger screen. I'm sure the 5080 might look a little better if I put them side by side, but, I don't have both tv's side by side and the picture on the 6070 and I couldn't imagine a better picture...and personally I think a 10" screen size increase is much more desirable then a small increase in PQ.

You'll be happy with either choice...but believe me you won't be dissapointed with a huge 60" screen with an amazing PQ. We watched some SD on it and it also looked better then I expected. My biggest problem right now is that with the blinds open, you can clearly see the screen through the window....I'm a little worried about getting robbed now.

Also I highly recommend Roman...got it at a great price and it was at my doorstep within two days, and much much cheaper then BB.

I am pretty confident that I will go for a 6070. My eyes are not that great, and I am not super picky when it comes to black levels. Plus 60in is a significant size jump from the 50in. I think that will be great considering all the sports I watch. Plus the 6010 will be way out of my league. Thanks for all the advice and input!

The 5070 isn't bad at all. The 5080 just makes every other flat panel look bad. Especially if its' a side by side comparison.
