Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Beta!

60,000 keys going out to fileplanet members (30k to subscribers, 30k to free members). Got my key today and downloading the client as I write this.

With the Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Public Beta approaching, we have a few more bits of information about how the whole thing is organized, how you will be able to get your key, and, most importantly, when key distribution will actually start.

First off, I know there's some concern that most of the 60,000 Public Beta slots will go to FilePlanet subscribers - this is not the case. In fact, the keys are split right down the middle, with half going to subscribers and the other half to people with free FilePlanet accounts.

Now, the ETQW Public Beta client will not work without a valid beta key. With that in mind, your next question is undoubtedly "How the *bleep* do I get a key?" Aside from the fact that this is a family-friendly blog and I won't have that kind of language around here, it's pretty straightforward: There will be a special Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Public Beta mini-site going up on FilePlanet that will be available throughout the key distribution phase. When you log into this site with your FilePlanet account and keys are available at that time, you'll get your key along with a download link for the beta client.

Let's move on to the actual distribution phase of the beta. As you're reading this, the beta is being released to a very limited number of select FilePlanet subscribers - we're calling this the sneak peek phase. Essentially, we're using this to test the delivery process and to see if there are any last minute showstopper issues. If you are a FilePlanet subscriber, you may get the chance to partake in this.

If the sneak peek goes well and no catastrophic issues crop up, we will move on to the actual key distribution phase. This is going to last several days and on each day we will make available a number of beta slots through the aforementioned ETQW sub-site on FilePlanet. During the first three days of this process, keys will be available to FilePlanet subscribers only. This will be followed by two days of keys for anyone with a free FilePlanet account.

The best part, and I've been waiting five paragraphs to say this, is that Day 1 of key distribution is currently scheduled for the middle of this week. That's right, the first batch of keys for the Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars Public Beta will go out in just a few days! FilePlanet's ETQW sub-site will be going up that same day.

Now why are we spreading these out over several days instead of throwing all 60,000 keys out at once? Simple: We want to make sure that as many people as possible get the chance to obtain a key and we feel that scheduling a predetermined number of keys to go out each day is the best way to do this. We're also going to be gradually ramping up the number of available keys with each passing day, so as time goes on, more keys are passed out per day. This allows us to steadily increase the load on our back-end infrastructure, making sure we can effectively test that.

Of course, a multiplayer beta is useless if there are no servers to play on. Towards that end, we've been working closely with a select number of Game Server Providers to get servers for the Public Beta up in North America, Europe, and Australia. We will continue to work with GSPs around the world to make sure Enemy Territory: QUAKE Wars servers can be found in every major territory when the game ships.

One last thing: We will definitely keep you updated throughout the various phases of the Public Beta roll-out, so be sure to check the site regularly to find out the latest. If you have an RSS reader, you can grab our feed right here to stay up to date on all things ETQW.

Can also be downloaded via Bit Torrent without the CD key. Perhaps someone will find a workaround so we all can play the beta.

Whats the gaming world coming to? you need a cd key to play a beta version?

How do you get a key I don't see anywhere on FP to sign up for one and I'm a paying member.

Only new subscribers (who joined particularly for this event) got the sneak preview beta keys which sucks for us current members, but in a few more hours (it's now 6am wed) we get our chance.

it's up now, but it's telling me my hardware is not enough to run the beta....

I got my code.

I just got mine as well

Wait, how do free (cheap) members get their keys?

It says only subscribed members can get keys on the filefront website?

not sure about the free guys getting one, I think you have to be paid.

Don't worry, you are not really missing all that much.

After all the movies they showed, I have yet to experience anything close online. The gameplay is fast, (too fast if you ask me) and the controls are a littly nutty. Maybe the release will be better.

I was doing some reading and it said the maps were really small and only accommodate 8v8 comfortably... It looked like giant multiplayer maps in the videos.

exactly. The videos had that "epic battle" feel to them, but the map in the beta is pretty small.

It plays more like UT than Quake to me. I don't think it's going to be a hit.

I got my key yesterday but couldn't download since I was at work. I went back last night and tried to download using the link that was provided in the e-mail from File Planet, but it wouldn't let me download without giving me a subscribe ad. I'm a yearly sub so there's no reason I should be getting that.

I think the FP subscriber thing is nutz. I have the "big package" and yet it still tells me to upgrade...go figure.

Don't support fileplanet.

Seconded...dont support fileplanet.

not to start a flame war or anything, but what's the gripe with FP? I think it's cool to have all the big patches available on a fat pipe 24/7.
Fileplanet used to be the cool centralized place to get files. Then it became heavily favored on subscribers, now they've got..what..tiered subscriptions, and it becomes ever more of a pain in the ass to just "Find the link, click on it, and download it"??

So now I have to pay for dedicated bandwidth? To download patches and stuff? Thats just 'tarded if you ask me......I mean, whats to download? Game demos dont always come out, patches dont always come out....your money is wasted just sitting there until a big demo or patch comes out, and usually the demos are all over the net. This current one notwithstanding.

I have this bitch with most web sites these days however...too cluttered, too messy, too many dumb kids with greased jet-black hair drinking too much effing coffee thinking that every web page should be a vomitorium of blinking icons and paid advertisements :P

GamersHell lets you see how saturated a pipe is, and downloads usually just "happen", no windows open windows open wait windows open windows..etc.....oh yeah and its free.

it can be the same cluttered mess as other sites however, so I usually just to go GH via other links which point me there....then choose a download location, see which ones are downloading the fastest, and let it go.

I got my key the first day and played it for two days. I didn't like it at all. I will not be buying it.

I was underwhelmed as well. The weapons didn't have any "oomph" to them, and the gameplay was too derivative of the Battlefield series. I was really hoping the game would bring something new to the table other than its use of "megatextures."

As far as FP goes, it's still a great place to download files even if you don't have a subscription. You just can't take advantage of their special beta offers and such. Frankly, the subscription is a pretty good deal. It's a little more than $3/month when you purchase it on a yearly basis, which is well worth it IMO.

I played a few rounds but like Mike said I think it's more UT than BF. Being able to put a huge turret down is cool but I can see turret spamming being an issue. I wanted to like this but meh I'll wait for Crysis.

A patch for the beta is out, it includes botplay.

I pretty much hate this game, I've put about 7 hours into it to make myself see what other people are seeing (who like it).
