Why not have a choice in the program?

With many channels, its not so bad removing a bit from the left/right. It would certainly look better than having the image STRETCHED and distorted!!

I don't like streched video either, but it seems to be the typical solution for handeling 16:10.

I wouldn't mind giving people a choice, but I haven't come up with any scheme that would handle every situation and yet still be simple.

I tried your app last night, and the slow channel scan did not find any channels. I left everything pretty much at the default, it seemed to detect my ATI TV Wonder 650 just fine, but no channels. I already have GBPVR on there, and it does see the channels, so maybe I'm just not selecting the right option?

The default settings should work. The only suggenstion I can think of is to make sure you have the antenna connected to the input marked "dtv/fm".
CORRECTION: the cable was plugged into the wrong port. When I plugged it into the DTV port, it found all the digital channels.

Turns out, the problem is GB-PVR, or at least my config. It found all my analog channels when hooked up to the other coax (which is why I had connected it there), but finds nothing when connected to the DTV. Since I only really care about HD, that is a significant issue for me.

EASY HDTV, on the other hand is working awesome. It found all my channels and looks very good. Admittedly, it is washed out compared to my TV's built-in tuner (I tried VMR7,VMR9,EVR--and the rest), but perhaps that is a function of my video card (8400GS) more than the tuner or the renderer.

You could check the video decoder properties, some video decoders have adjustments for brightness and contrast. Or select the "VMR7 (use overlays)" renderer and adjust the overlay through the Nvidia control panel "adjust video color settings".

!!!

Overscan and Always on Top!!

...but did you break anything? I'm only asking that because with another TV app, when some much-desired features made it into a new release, half a dozen other features were somehow dropped that the previous release was able to do.

Also, I forgot if this was reported:

With the 1.2.1 version (or whatever the current version is), when you turn off the File menu, if you go into Full screen mode and then back to windowed mode, the File menu is back.

edit:
I think someone broke my internet.
I can't get to http://www.enigmaindustries.com/ at all. has 1.3.0 been posted?

Any alternative download locations?
Ok, I just got home and brought up your site just fine.

However, a few issues:

1.3.0 also puts the Menu back when you go full screen. You have to click View -> Menu and then View -> Menu a second time to make it go away, and it comes right back when you return from full screen mode.

- BIG issue with 1.3.0, I get a "flicker" to the left, right, above and below the picture. I don't know if this is from the overscan thing, but it makes watching TV pretty annoying. I'm watching 1.2.1 again actually.

- feature request: ability to manually add a channel. The auto scan sometimes doesn't pick up my local channel 11 and 30. If I play with the antenna I can get them to come in, but then I have to run the auto scan and sit through a scan of all channels again, and it sometimes loses my channel 4 then.

Always On Top seems to work great, thanks!

I'm gonna try to link some images here:

The parts where the red arrows point flash.

Please add recording functionality, even scheduling.

I have a problem though where Easy HDTV does not find a couple of channels during the channel scan when using my HDHR. The HDHR tunes them fine, but EH does not see them. The problem occurs on QAM and only seems to occur for channels which are not the first stream on the QAM channel. For example if ABC, Fox, and CW are on QAM @ 573 mhz, then the channel scan will only find/tune ABC-like the subchannels are not recognized. Maybe its a HDHR driver problem?

I can't recreate the problem you're describing. What does your HDHR "Digital Cable.xml" file look like for the channels in question?

Has there been any progress with the Vista SP1 issue?

Sorry, no progress on the EVR flickering problem. We've been waiting, hoping Microsoft might fix the problem, but it doesn't seem like that's going to happen.

A new version 1.3.1 is available which fixes the EVR flickering problem.

Thank you!!! I know you could do it!

So... how did you do it?

The problem is if the video is smaller than the window it needs to be letter or pillar boxed. The EVR doesn't draw the letter/pillar boxing properly, it ends up showing parts of the frame buffers that haven't been cleared. The solution was to make the window the same size as the video so that the EVR doesn't do any letter/pillar boxing.

Our recording app, Easy HDTV DVR is now available. Records in DVR-MS format, recieves free guide information from PSIP data and works with most ATSC BDA tuners.

Works on XP or Vista operating system and requires an ATSC Tuner card and MPEG-2 and AC3 decoders.

Easy HDTV version 1.5.0 is now available. It adds a PSIP fed program guide and support for clear QAM in Vista with tuner drivers that have a QAM modulator node.

You can check for a QAM modulator node on the driver by bringing up the channels dialog there will be a "Demodulator:Mode" drop box, if there are QAM options in the drop box then the tuner driver has a QAM modulator node.
Hi Greg,

I tried your software with my HVR-950Q USB stick, which supports ATSC+QAM (tested with BeyondTV). While the ATSC works great, I am not able to choose QAM demodulator in the channels dialog. Can you look into that?

I don't have one of those tuners to test, but it looks like you need to change a registry entry to get the QAM tuner node to show up in the driver. Take a look at this: http://www.hauppauge.co.uk/board/showthread.php?t=15907 You'll need to add or change this entry in the registry:

; HVR-950q
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Servic es\\HCW72DTV\\Parameters]
"AllowQAM_PowerToy"=dword:00000001

Follow these steps:
8. Open the registry (run/regedit)
9. Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Servic es\\HCW72DTV
10. Add new Folder (key) and name it: Parameters
11. Add a new DWORD to that and name it: AllowQAM_PowerToy
12. Make the value for the new string: 1
13. Restart system

Thanks Greg. The channel scanner now finds 256QAM channels under Cable (HRC). However, in most of the channels, although the signal strength is 100%, there is no picture/audio at all. What's happening?

My system info:
Vista business 32
Hauppauge HVR-950Q
Comcast basic cable
Video decoder: Cyberlink PowerDVD
Audio decoder: ffdshow audio
Renderer: EVR
The settings work with ATSC/antenna.

edit: Tried on another XP machine, same thing.

Those are probably encryped channels. Encrypted are not currently automatically excluded from the channel list.
No it can't be. The same channel are showing using other softwares. Perhaps the software has mistaken it for encrypted channels?
Greg,
I like your TV viewing application. I'm going to use it for the rest of the trial to see if it suits my needs.

I did have some suggestions:
-Add capability to remove black bars on the sides of 4:3 content in a 16:9 stream. This prevents the content from being viewed at its maximum size in a 4:3 display.
-Make the buttons (play, stop, record, etc) more intuitive. What I mean is that I click on a button but dont know if it has really taken effect or not. For example, when I click on record, disable the button so it cant be clicked again until stop is pressed.

Thanks for the suggestions jaimegmr.

We do have plans for a feature that crops the sides of the video, although there is no estimation of when it might be added.

We had tried greying out keys that couldn't be used, but it didn't look very good, and was of no use when using a remote, so we decided against it.

Does the purchase of a license include free upgrades to future versions?

Other suggestions:
- Make the Info and OSD screens smaller or less obtrusive. Also allow user to set how long the Info and OSD remain on the screen.
- Make the Info, OSD, and Guide screens customizable (opacity, color, etc)
- If you dont have plans to disable buttons, maybe show what the program is currently doing either over the TV screen or on a status bar. That way you can show a "Recording...(elapsed time here)" message or "Paused" message, etc.

I'm really, really tempted to buy a license for EasyHDTV.

I wanted to mirror what jaimegmr suggested above.
(allowing the info/osd screen to stay up for a user-defined amount of time...Or permanently until a key is pressed....)

I want to use Easy HDTV on a netbook with a USB2 ATSC tuner, and use it as a signal meter.
(Have you considered a signal quality meter, along with signal strength???)
However, it's fairly annoying to have the info screen with signal strength disappear after about 12 seconds.
Yeah, I can turn it back on by hitting the space bar, but that's kind of a pain when you're up in a shallow attic.

My two cents: the more customization/options available to the end user, the more people that will be attracted to EasyHDTV.
For example: Look at FFDshow... Complicated for a newbie, yes... But it can do just about anything you need it to.

If the purchase of an EasyHDTV license includes lifetime upgrades, I'll buy a copy today.

Hi Greg,

I have another suggestion. I watched a music video the other day on TV and was enjoying it so much that I forgot to press the Record button. After the music video ended, I tried to rewind and record, but the program only records the Live TV feed. So my suggestion is this:

-Add a button to the program to dump the video cache to a file. This way, the hour or so of video that is in the cache can be recorded to a video file at any time.

I too am thinking of buying a license of Easy HDTV. I really like how its nice and simple and not too bloated. I have my tv tuner card in a machine that I also use for gaming and chatting online, so it will be nice to be able to have the TV veiwing in a simple window and not some huge full screen app. I am wondering if we purchase a key, will it include free updates? Now I'm gonna try out the trial of the DVR software.
