Considering powerstrip - is it necessary?

Guys and gals,

Here's my setup:
WinXP HTPC with Radeon 9600XT -> DVI-HDMI cable -> Optoma HD70.

So far I've only been using it for downloaded HD trailers and light gaming. I have no ripped DVD content, but will soon.

I installed the ATI display driver but not Catalyst Control Center because I don't really want .NET. Windows has no problem with the HD70's native resolution: 1280x720 @60Hz for 1:1 pixel mapping.

Games look fine, text looks fine.

Eventually I will archive my DVD collection (into .vob files most likely). I assume I'll see judder associated with 3:2 pulldown during playback. I'd like to test the HD70 at 48Hz (47.95 according to other forum threads here). I doubt Windows will let me set 1280x720 @47.95Hz within the usual Windows display properties. Since I didn't install the Catalyst Control Center, I don't know if it can be done there or not.

But reportedly this is why I should use Powerstrip? Is this basically correct?

Does anyone know if Catalyst Control Center can do this too?

It will be interesting to compare playback of a DVD rip on the HTPC to the original played back on my oppo dvd player.

Thanks,
Jay

You can set custom resolutions with ATI's Catalyst if the card supports it. I would guess that your card supports it

I'm sure I set custom resolutions with Catalyst - but I don't need to. 1280x720 is a default resolution identified by Windows without Catalyst. I need to know if I can change frequencies to 47.95 Hz ? Does Catalyst offer this much precision (XX.XX) ?

Powerstrip

Hi Jay,

Catalyst driver does not allow you to add custom resolutions and refresh rates. You 'll need Powerstrip to do that.

There are alternatives if you are good with editing the registry. The Omega driver creates custom resolutions in the registry. You can follow what they do. The process is quite straight forward.

You can also use the modemaker to help you in the process. The program is defective, however, you'll have to edit certain registry entries manually after they have been created. But it gets the job done.

The expert on these matters is Ashley Saldanha, a forum member who is also the author of Powerstrip.

Have a good day.
