Bottom end laptops might not, but it's not going to add much to the cost to add HDDVD on anything else. You can get the drives retail from China for $100, so we can just guess what Toshiba might pay. Maybe $60 in 100,000 bulk? Not much to a laptop's cost.

Give it 12 months and they'll cost barely more than a DVD-ROM, so it makes perfect sense for Toshiba.

Any news to help bluray, whether small or large is good in my books.
I don't care if its Universal goes neutral or McDonalds announces a blu-ray happy meal which includes a bluray disc of RonaldMcDonalds adventure in Cheesburger land.

Any news which causes more awarness of Blu-ray and ingrains into the general public that BD is truly the successor to DVD, then its all good in my book.

Toshiba doesn't go to China to buy HD DVD drives - they make their own via TSS - Toshiba Storage. They have both a reader and a read/write HD DVD drive(s)

competed against Dell selling HP and IBM in desktops, notebooks and servers. Dell lost the crown in 2006

HP is the #1 vendor and it pulling away. IBM is probably going to pass Dell but will do so based on their servers/Blades because they sold their desktop/laptop to Lenovo.

Oh I admit I'm biased against Dell. I've competed them so I don't give them any quarter. When Dell doesn't hit their numbers ...I love it. When HP extends their lead over Dell every quarter...I love it. When I look at Dell's financials and see they are worth half that of Apple ...I love it.

I don't need a valid argument. Everyone in the industry knows that Dell's hit the wall and is in flux. They still make a decent computer but it's doubtful that they will every be able to take the crown back. Every few weeks HP is acquiring a company and growing stronger. The new Proliant servers are nice. HPs newest Blade system (C-class) is better than anything Dell can come up with.

I dont' think you guys understand what is going on in the computing industry. HP and IBM will continue to pound Dell into the dirt. Both have market caps twice that of Dell. HP sells both HD DVD and Blu-ray so Dell has absolutely no advantage. HP just acquired Voodoo computers for high end gaming that match or exceed Dell XPS.

Again...don't be surprised in 5 years or less if Dell gets bought out.

Hey Man,

They moved my Toshiba laptop HD DVD drive thread to the hardware Forum, when someone suggested it - well why not this one? I am getting the opinion that AVS mods are favoring BRD.

Looks like my next laptop purchase won't be from Dell. That's too bad because I like my current Dell laptop. However if they have HDMI output (or DVI for a DVI-HDMI cable) then that would be cool.

LG is suing Quanta for patent infringement over DVD read/write royalties. Quanta makes, under contract; Dell, Apple, HP and Sony laptops - they are seeking an injunction:
