The local dealer here in CO just said that any of the Denon equipment slated for early December is now early January for the most part, so he said to expect it sometime around the turn of the year.

Not entirely bad news for me -- I need to save up for the stupid thing!

I'm curious to see how the retail price of these holds up when you can get the 4308, which is a hell of a receiver, for $2,499 retail, and $500 less than that in many places. I suppose because it's a 5 thousand series Denon, it'll automatically get a certain following, but still, I'm curious to know if these are one of those products that'll be able to be found for $2,000 off retail within 6 months of it being out.

I am curious as to the long delay in introduction of the top of the line 5308 when the prototypes have been out so long. If it is a problem of the availability of a key component like a chip, that would make some sense, but any reason to believe that introduction/announcements of competing models or new technology would have sent Denon back to the drawing board to change the specs or targeted price point? So far the delay has been oksy for me, because had I chosen the 4308 it would have been mated with the JVC RS1 and now I will use the second generation of that projector that is now being launched.

I would imagine that if it's anything but component delays, that it's them tweaking it to optimize all the stuff in it. Or at least I'd hope that's what it is. I think based on the comments here that the Onkyo is the perfect example of why using better components does not always lead to better results if they're not integrated/tweaked properly. On paper the new Onkyos have better video and audio processing chips but from what people are saying there are a lot of issues with the Onkyos (ie video doesn't look great, audio popping, etc). Also they have discovered issues with the 3808/4308 firmware and they may be resolving those in the 5308 firmware before sending it out.

It would be nice to see some product sheets and pictures and spec's/ manual for the North American version. If it is coming out in a month or so, you would think Denon US and Canadian sites would put some info up fairly soon here.

Considering there were reports of the 4308 and 3808 in customers hands before the website was updated I think it's unlikely we see any info directly from Denon before the 5308 is released.

i actually asked Denon the same thing already, the guy i talked to said they don't even have them yet. j&r is saying that it should ship in under 2 weeks, not sure i believe that, but that is what they told me.

Prosumer DACs like the PCM1792 didn't offer much practical benefit for CDs and DVDs, but Blu-ray is arguably a different story, where you find an increasing number of titles with 24/48 (i.e. ~144dB SNR) LPCM, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS-HD MA. With such Blu-ray titles, premium DACs should provide a higher-fidelity signal to the amp.

The 1796 in the 5308 still seems to be an improvement over the 1791A used in the 5805ci.

While scanning through this thread earlier today, couldn't help but notice incorrect info regarding 5805. The 5805 uses same DACs as 5910, the Burr Brown 1792 (can't imagine the DACs were changed for the CI model). So I'd have to say that the 5308 would not be an improvement over the 5805 in this particular regard.

According to Denon's website the 5805 MKII/CI use Burr Brown 1791 DACs,
so I'm not sure your info is correct?

The information above was quoted straight from Denon's product datasheets. The information on the 5308 is from Denon pre-release documentation so I suppose it could change by release.

Denon does indeed state the 1791 for the 5805CI. Surprises me as I read the 5910 and 5805 had used identical DACs... E.g., here from the Secrets of Home Theater and High Fidelity product review of the 5805: "The AVR-5805 is equipped with Denon's DDSC, (Dynamic Discrete Surround Circuit). For surround sound, Denon employs high quality Burr Brown PCM-1792 24-bit/192 KHz DACs for all 16 channels and 32-bit floating point DSPs for both the main and second zones." (Since they'd opened it up...) Guess I'll pull my MK2 apart some day and see what's really in there for myself...

The Denon document is wrong, the 5805CI is indeed using PCM-1792...

The AVR-5308 is actually using 6 x PCM-1796...for it's 9.3 channel preamp out...so more like $52.80 difference for 1792...
