By electronics, I meant rec'rs and preamps. Other DVD Players:
Samsung BD-P1200 Reon
Toshiba HD-XA2 Reon

Several projs, Syntax Olevia LCDs, and video processors also use the chips.

I believe the Onkyos and Integras are basically the same units.

Any ideas weather or not the 5308 is THX certified? 4308 on down are not.

Is it just me, or has anyone else noticed how substantial the case is on this beast? Those side walls look like they are 3/16" thick, whereas most receivers these days use cheap, thin, formed sheet metal cases. I am a sucker for good build quality, but it also greatly reduces the resonance of the case.

I wonder if the final production 5803 will really have a thick machined aluminum cover like this prototype does? Even if it is only 1/8" in the final product, it will be an improvement over most AVRs.

I had the 5800 and it had a really well made case that gives you a certian sense of pride of ownership. The thought is that if they care that much about the case, just as much if not more care went into the circuit and component design.

Can't wait for this unit to reach market.

I never noticed before that this thing has a 4th zone. I knew it had component video out to zone 2, but it seems it also has composite out to zone 3. I'm falling in love with this thing. Do you guys know if anywhere you will be able to get one of these things online? I don't think there is a Denon dealership anywhere close to me.

BTW, can someone tell me why there are two sets of antenna inputs in this bad boy?

I'm guessing one is regular radio and one is HD radio. Or one is AM and one is FM.

There is an AM loop connector in each place. I guess I could buy that one is for HD radio and one is for regular, but having two separate loop connectors for AM antenna threw me. Could this thing have two separate radio tuners to serve two different zones?

It won't come to market with that thick casing you're referring to. That is just a prototype shell used for display where you can see the top guts exposed.

While it probably won't have a case quite as thick as the prototype, I wouldn't be surprised if they went with a design similar to the current 5805 and the 5800 I used to own. Both have a removable top cover like the prototype 5803, and 1/8" aluminum side panels (as opposed to the formed sheet metal on their lower end models).

There is talk in the Denon 3808/4308 thread about the 4308 only having 7 channels despite having 11 outputs.

Does anyone know how many channels the 5308 will output simultaneously? I was under the false impression that if you could hook something up to it, it would play.

On the picture above some of the outputs are shown being labelled with "amp assign" so the 5308 will almost certainly not have 11 amp channels either. On AVBuzz (http://www.avbuzz.com/audio-video/200707/denon-a1hd/) I found this :

Now I can't read the Japanese/Chinese/Korean? but I'm going to assume that the 5308 is a 7 channel amp and has all the same limitations as the 4308.

I had a fellow Japanese co-worker verbally translate part of the file below and it appears that the 5308 will output 150W per channel X 7 channels (8 Ohm). I would have thought that it would have been 170W per channel like the current 5805 and even the old 5800, but it seems that Denon is being more consersvative in their ratings.

Rememeber the 5308 is not a replacement for the 5805.
It's actually a step below the 5805 and a step up from the 4308.

Good point, I just thought based on the size of the unit, the size of the transformer, and the size of the caps, that it would have the same power as the 58XX series.

So it's official. The Denon 5308 will be $5199 and is due out in December.

Crap, December? I was totally ready to pony up the extra for this over the 4308 since I figured all the complaints about the 4308 were resolved with this. But waiting an extra 4 months?!?!? Oh man I don't know if I have the patience for that.

That is disappointing. I was expecting it to be October, not December. Also, if they say December, I wouldn't bet on it being available before early next year. By then, I will have finished watching all the existing Blu-ray and HD DVD discs that I'm interested in seeing, so the benefits of the new receiver will be relevant only to new releases, and there isn't likely to be a deluge of those... Looks like I may stick to using the 5.1 inputs of my AVR-5700 for a long time. Getting the 4308 would be too much of a downgrade I think. I use the receiver for music as well.

Looks nice , but with all the features of the Integra DTC9.8 at $1600, and all the differant amp combinations you could get with the differance, what are the main advantages?
I see 6 HDMI inputs (maybe overkill for some).
Net streaming (but lots of differant options and quality levels available in standalone units).

for the $5200 of 5308, why not take 905 x 2 for less $2100 x 2?

Denon quoted late August delivery to my dealer today who in turn was able to place an order for me... and take a deposit.

WOW.... Denon had previously said December at their media event a couple of weeks ago.

I work for a large corporation and I purchase all of the electronics for my dept. As such, I have a strong relationship with our local Denon dealer. I just called him and he gave me a "late November" ETA for the 5308, but he also gave the disclaimer that Denon is notorious for pushing out dates.

I think that you will find that when the end of this month comes, you will be given another, later date. Depending on the dealer, they may string you along a month at a time until we finally reach Decemeber.

For all practical purposes there is zero difference between a reciever with 170 watts/channel and one with 150 watts/channel. One could never hear the difference as it is less than 1/2 a decibel difference. A human can only detect a 1 db difference unless you have dog ears transplanted to your head.

No doubt the sweet spot for Denon is the 4308ci. Hook it up with a Denon 3930ci at MSRP $1499 which has the REALTA chipset and you get the best non-HD movie watching you'll ever get. Plus it has SACD, DVD-A, and most of the other ancillary types available.

For those that want HD or Blu Ray with REALTA and don't care about SACD and DVD-A and maybe other ancillary formats, then go ahead. I think Denon's outlook is that people have large libraries of SD DVD's and many people don't want to pay the continued premium price for the HD and Blu Ray discs. I've seen the 3930ci and a Toshiba HD play the same movie side by side with the same adjusted 50" Pioneer 1080p plasma sets and 95% of the time it was nigh impossible to tell which was better.

And who knows how long HD and Blu Ray will last? There are any number of cheaper ways on the near horizon to view 1080p with the best audio codecs. Since Sony owns their own large library of films they may be very reluctant to release anything on a new format. Toshiba has no library of films. What if all the other studios decide to release their films on a new format with all the new codecs at the same price as Standard DVD's, or a couple of dollars more? Will Sony stand alone and let the consumer pass them buy?
