Noob - Tuners and Digital Cable Question

I'm sure this has been asked many times b/f but there seems to often be a lot of what if's and extraneous information so I thought I would ask again, in maybe a more simplified manner.

So through my digital cable box I dove into more of the technical menus to figure out what is digital or analog and also what channels are encrypted or decrypted.

Do I understand correctly that on the analog, non digital channels (ch 1-99), the Hauppauge 150 (I have one), 250, and 500 will capture these channels?

Secondly, for the digital (QAM 64 and 256) but unencrypted channels, will an HD Homerun will capture all of these? However, is it also correct that the HD HR will NOT capture the analog channels?

If this is the case and I want the ability to either be able to capture 2 analog channels will I either need to get a second Hauppauge single tuner card or sell my current one to get a dual tuner card?

Another question I have is in regards to how the HD HR connects to the PC. Is it correct that it connects through the NIC? If this is the case and I also need an internet connection going to the HTPC, then I need to purchase a mouthboard with two NIC connections?

Actually after reading yet another thread, I supposed I may be confused again. Please look at the posts from "newlinux" on this thread: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=853531

So it appears as though my set top box indicates my channels 1-99 are "clear" and analog signals. Will the Hauppauge cards be able to read these channels or not?

From the thread above, I suppose I am confused on whether or not I can record these channels and what I will need for tuner cards to pick these up.

You can attach the HDHR directly to a computer (in which case, you would indeed two NIC connections for your particular need -- you could get a mouthboard (<-- whatever that is ) with two ethernet connections, or just get a typical motherboard (single NIC) and add a cheap PCI ethernet card).

Or you can get a router and attach the HDHR to it, which in turn attaches to your computer. This way you aren't limiting the HDHR to a single system (outside of not having to setup even more complex networking and streaming solutions), as all devices attached to the router can access the HDHR.

I suggest the router option -- having a router offers other, non related, advantages as well.

You should be able to take the cable line (RG-59) and connect it straight into the RF input of the Hauppauge card and have it tune these channels. Alternatively, you could let your cable set to box tune the channels and pass them out via s-video (or even yucky composite) to your Hauppauge card for capturing.

CityK,

Thanks so much for clarifying. I thought I was headed in the right direction, but needed to make sure. I appreciate the help greatly.

Now I just need to figure out what MOUTHboard (motherboard) to go with
