How to record 1080i from UHD channel in 1080i comcast dct-3412 best?

I have the Motorola dtc-3412, which I am told is an older Motorola box, I want to record some shows in hd off it, in whatever fashion is best or easiest.

I see folks doing firewire to xp, and I see the snapstream boards for pcs, the fusion usb hdtv recorders as well.

My question is, should I get a newer or different model box from comcast?

If not, what is the best way to do this...if I could get a one stop thing with either a fushion or snapstream product on a pc or the firewire to xp that would be great?

The ultimate goal being to capture the shows in 1080i when they are sent 1080i AND burn them to a dvd with a codec to play BACK at 1080i as well.

I have just spent 3 hours doing searches on the board reading peoples experiences and realized there are too many posts to be able to read them all.

I build my own pc's so I am pretty pc literate.

Assuming the flag is disabled 5C, can I record the 1080i from one of the ports on this cable box?

Thanks for the help folks!

The box you use should not matter. What you failed to mention is if your cable company has 5C/CCI flags enabled. If they are, which is probably the case, there is nothing you can do to capture this material bit-for-bit.

I did not fail to mention it, I don't know so I can't "mention" it and I still want the input from members as to what they think is the best quality or easiest route to go.

I might either find a way around the Comcast flag if its an issue, or maybe get another cable box or provider.

I would ask other Comcast users in the Atlanta area (search AVSforum) to see if 5C is enabled. Again, I would bet it is. There really is no "quality" issue with digital. You can either get the bits of data, or not. One cable box might be more compatible with your firewire card than the next...

Believe me, there is no way around the flag. Changing cable boxes will not fix this either. And if you are lucky enough to have the choice of more than one cable provider, I would do do some research first to see if they have 5C enabled.

CCI and DRM must both be 0x00 or the signal is encrypted.

hmmm, this is a dual tuner box, tuner #1 has a CCI value that is not 0x00, and for DRM has 0x00.

Tuner#2 has 0x00 for CCI but has a value that is not 0x00 for DRM.

According to posts on the web, you need a value of 0x00 in both the DRM and CCI values or the signal is encrypted.

The firewire port does show active.

HDCP does not show enabled. So it looks like Comcast is complying with the copy flag setting but encrypting the signal?
