Disappointed with my new screen compared to painted wall

I messed up, so no need to point it out!!

When I was finishing my HT a year ago, I wasn't ready to buy a screen. I reaseached these pages, but finally just painted the wall white using a "Pure White". I am in fully light controlled with black ceiling, blackish carpet and dark red walls. The result was great, and I had no problem with the picture. Plenty bright, even my my PT-AX100U at eco mode. Only issue was not having a black border.

I saw a cheap screen material on ebay, that got pretty good reviews here and on ebay,. Figured that I would build my frame, so I could change out the screen material later, and add a design where I add a black rectangle left and right, and over/below the screen.

I got the screen material. Looked heavy, slightly shiny white (claimed gain of 1.0) and a black back. Lifted it up in front of the projector, and figured it looked good. I installed a frame on the wall using poplar 1x4s, and mounted the screen material. The black borders would be added later. Well...

I immediately noticed that you can SEE the screen on the picture. In highlighted areas of a movie, you can see a pattern that moves the opposite way of the camera scan. I had never noticed that with my painted wall. Is that due to cheap screen material, or will I see that on a more expensive screen material as well?

Also the sheen on the material is distracting. The picture probably looks slightly better with low lights, but I would not sacrafice my no-light picture experience. Any comments?

I am going to detach part of the screen so I can do a full comparison.

Finally - and this may be fixed - I notice once or twice that the whole screen shook. As I mounted the screen material on the front of the frame, there is no rear support, and even though it is tight, you can create s slight shimmer if you poke it. Booms from the subwoofer seemed to accomplish that trick

Sigh... Just created a lot of work for nothing

All is not lost - all you need to do is paint that screen surface with the mix of your choice.

I detached the screen materical and rolled it up so I could compare my painted background and the screen. I saw little difference other than a better gain, and slightly performance when my lights were on. The visibility of the screen was to annoying though, so everything was pulled off, and I am starting over.

Will probably try the FnEasy. Now have to decide whether to do white or gray, though I am biased against white since it worked well for me so far...

I saw the same flaws you mention with my friends commercial screen. I would try to steer you toward a very light gray instead of white. I have tried a hand full of grays, and the lighter shade that I use now is my favorite when used in a dark room.
