Underworld & Silent Hill HD DVD on pre-order

Thread Starter
Underworld [HD DVD]

Silent Hill [HD DVD]

Both titles are 24,99 EUR each (incl. 19% VAT), which is pretty fair for German conditions.
Customers outside the EU only pay the price w/o the VAT, approx. 20,30 EUR.

Don't forget the shipping costs, Amazon only accounts 14 EUR, no matter how many items are included in the order.

The English audio will be available on both HD DVDs along the German dub. There will be probably only German subtitles, which, like on the DVD, won't be forced on the English track.
Besides, I don't know any DVD by Concorde which features forced subtitles at all.

I would totally import Silent Hill if the quality was better than the BR (I heard it wasn't that good a transfer)... I loved that movie!

the Silent Hill BD is one of the best of the early releases, the PCM is scary and PQ is superb save a elevated black level that needs correcting on a scaler or display

one of my favorite releases

There's also the fact that most of the colors are oversaturated and the video is filled with noise. But, you know, to each their own...

Silent Hill on Blu-ray looks magnificent, barring one slight problem: the compression is, in places, atrocious. If it was re-released on a BD50 and/or with a VC1 or AVC transfer derived from the same master, it could easily be reference quality. If the same master ends up being used for the HD DVD (I'm not sure if that's possible, given the different rights owners), I'll definitely be very interested to see how it compares.

I will be interested to do a good A/B comparison...

Yeah, this is what I was referring to. It can't be as bad as the DVD though... I remember being particularly frustrated with all the macroblocking.

So, enlighten me.... does that mean that I would get spoken English just like the American release? Will I get the real people voices? Will their mouths move funny, aka "Godzilla" syndrome?

Thanks.... I dont order Euro films because I HATE subtitles and only want English tracks.

Typically, the voices are replaced with those of Bavarian voice actors who are trying hard to imitate Bruce Willis with their best highschool English. Also, since the little Euro sound systems are unable to reproduce mighty American bass, gunshots and explosions are typically replaced by a little French guy saying "bang bang".

Are these the first two HD DVDs from Concorde?

I have a few of their WMV and they look pretty good. Never could get a copy of the highly sought after Underworld WMV though.

I will buy Underworld no doubt. If Xploited carries it, it should be very reasonable. If not I will probably order about 5 copies and do a group buy with others to offset the shipping charges. I have ordered from Amazon.de before no problems.

Yes. But the first wave will also include "Tomb Raider", "Wir waren Helden" (We were Soldiers) and "12 Monkeys".

OK, areyou being sarcastic here? Maybe I should see that if you are, but I really dont know so..... this response doesnt help me unless I know if you are beiong serious or not!

Yeah, it's true, in fact last year there was outrage in the European government when citizens complained that the hit HD DVD and Blu-ray release "How to learn Sarcasm in 10 easy steps" was poorly overdubbed.

I'd be willing to order Silent Hill as soon as I find out that there are no burned in subtitles or goofy pitch problems like Total Recall. I also own the BD version, (which is not a great transfer), so I'd be interested to see how the HD DVD compares to it.

I also own the [American] BD version and think that bar a few compression artefacts and scenes that have been filtered, it looks great for the most part. The level of detail's really high in most shots. What'd you think was poor about it, Eric?

Oh, c'mon, how could anybody not see that he's sarcastic?

On the german releases you get the original english/american audio track (meaning the same track as on an US disc - and no there's no speedup on HD releases) - the only thing you may want to check is wether it's TrueHD, DD+ or just DD.

Never said the BD was poor, just that it was not a great transfer. What bothered me about it was that it would fluctuate from a clean image to a noisy one in the next shot every once in a while. That kinda took me out of the film. There were also a few compression artifacts that caught my eye. Overall I would give it a B/B+ for PQ. The AQ was awesome though.

I just really liked this film and would love to get a solid transfer for it. So I'm hoping the HD DVD version can do a little better. I don't regret purchasing the BD version though, for it's miles better than the SD DVD.

Noisy? You mean the film grain, right?

All right...I get the "duh" award for the week. I read through his answer too quickly and actually thought about the Bavarian actors doing voice-overs. Like bad Porn. Oh gosh.....

All good!

If we're still talking about Silent Hill, the grain is poorly compressed and doesn't look much like film grain anymore in a lot of scenes.

Amen.

Also, that little French guy who goes "bang bang?" He's not kidding. That little b*st*rd takes me right out of the movie everytime I hear him, just like the Wilhelm scream.
