Actually, it was a guy who was with JBL Synthesis through the 90s and 2000s, so he had an inside view at JBL...and still does. He also still reps Syn and others. Beyond JBL, this info is rather routine and is easy to confirm regarding THX Ultra and Ultra 2 sub specs and design theory as it applies to small room LF acoustics. For instance, you could ask Tony Grimani (formally of Pro THX and Dolby) or John Dahl of THX, etc..and they would pretty much tell you the same. They would also be the first to confirm some of what RD comments on in his response. The lack of any possible room standards in homes make absolutes impossible, hence the necessity to design as well as possible, then verify and modify as required.
