As I said in post # 348, I'd use the Balconies over the Tours.
They aren't the same speaker, the XO on the Balconies is 1000htz lower and has two ports, the Tours only have one port.

CR is always looking to suggest to buy at a cheaper price point. And that usually doesn't work in CE. None of us here would even entertain the idea that all JBLs are equal. There is the DD66000 and then all the rest.

Its gotten mighty quiet in here. So in order to liven things up a bit, I think ill give a little mini-review of the LC2 now that ive been using it for a little while.

In short, this center channel just plain kicks a$$! It definitely has some testicular fortitude compared to my old center and other centers i have listened to. Voices have nice "body" to them I guess you could say. Voices that are deep or have deeper components to them sound much fuller and stronger, something that was missing witht he small sattellite style center I used to have. My one quip is its kind of large looking on my TV, almost like its this monolith looming over you LoL. Im sure it wouldnt look so big wall mounted like its designed to be. Im definitely enjoying the speaker! I cant wait to finally get the L890's, so that I can move the L820's to their surround positions (im currently using them as mains in the meantime and still have my little JBL scs series satellites doing surroun duty). Also can't wait to get that SVS sub to get some real bass in movie viewing and last but not least a new AVR that has some more watts per channel to feed these hungry Studio Ls

The entire Studio L series is very good. I haven't heard all of the different models, but of the ones I have heard, they do the job, and then some.
I did hear the LC2 and it does kick some ass. And the center is the most important when watching a movie w/digital sound.
I heard a lot of centers that were just plain lame, better off going phantom center, than to use those.
Having had the L890s for 7 months, I can say they are a great speaker. There were days that I liked the sound from the L890s better than my PT800s, which are more than twice the list price. And the PT800s need a sub, to boot.

i have 2 E90's northridge as my mains, an Studio L lc1 center and 2 L820's as my surrounds, with an Infinity Sw12 sub all connected to a Yamaha rxv-661 now i'm just wondering whats the best settings on the receiver, do i set all the speakers to small?
or leave the mains and cnter large like the auto setup wants

Not knowing a whole lot about your particular setup, I'd set everything to small and adjust your crossover as low as it will go.

This is good advice from eugovector, and a fine starting point. The Yamaha's YPAO is sometimes wrong and only offers suggestions, in any event. Leave all speakers set to small, but I would suggest setting the crossover at 80 Hz. Those surrounds won't go much below that and the Yammie doesn't set individual speaker crossovers. (There is only one xover for all speakers.) Try it at 60, as well, and see how that sounds to you.

Ultimately, you may want to acquire an spl meter (Radio Shack, analog) and a Rives or Digital Video Essentials disc for finding your system's/room's actual frequency response. The flatter, the better.

All receivers can come up with a wrong settings. But the E90 is full range, when I had a pair of L890s in the setup I ran them full range, So its a matter of choice how you set them up.
I don't know about the Yamaha, but my H/K can be set to L/R large, +sub+lfe.
Now with all PT800s in the mix, they're all set to small.

To bring all of you up to date, there is a new JBL series, not yet released but much talk about it.
The ES series, it was displayed at the last CES show in LV. Here is a thread @ Lansing Heritage.

I don't know about the contrast with the wood grain (I'd have to see the grills on), but the black is nice. Seems like a slight step up from the venue series for not a lot of $$, and about 10x better looking. The venue series was starting to hurt my eyes.

Excellent point here though: "One obvious omission is the lack of an E50 replacement large bookshelf, which was a very nice speaker. Also, there is no EC35 replacement, leaving the center channel duties limited to a two-way design."

The L820's range is (±3dB) 55Hz - 40kHz , so if you can I'd probably go with that 60 Hz crossover setting.

Ya it's rediculous that you have to go "high end" now just to get a decent 3-way center. That's why I have 3 EC35s . I wonder how well those speakers would match the EC35.
I think the problem JBL had with the E50s (I have 2 pr that I'm using for surrounds) is that they were too good, too much bang for your buck. When they were clearing out stock for the discontinuation of the E Series, a pair of E50s could be had for less than $200 shipped. Why buy towers that cost $200 or more each when you can get E50s that sound just as good.

I'm with ya, my s38ii cost me $175 for the pair, used.

But, one big problem with the E50/S38 was that they were still too big to be considered a bookshelf, but you needed a stand of some kind, unlike a floor standing speaker. I'm sure a lot of people thought, "yeah, their cheap, but what am I going to set them on?"

Ya, true dat. I still like 'em though. It was never a worry for me though since I have a background in carpentry and all the tools. So custom shelves are always a day away. Only problem is trying to find a free day.

I went cinderblocks and fabric myself. Other than being a pain to position, I'd recommend the approach for anyone in need of sturdy, non-resonant speaker stands.

I'll be posting this in the For Sale section tonight or tomorrow, but figured I'd quickly throw it out here.

My pair of E30s and my EC35 are for sale. They are 3 years old in excellent condition. (The E30s have Omni 20 ball mounts on the back of them.)

I have the original box and packing material for the E30s and the original box but no packing material for the EC35 (my wife used the box when we moved).

I wouldn't call the Studio L series high end, by any means, and the LC2 is a very good 4-way center.

Rephrase: JBL should offer a decent 3-way center for less than $300 msrp.

The LC1, which is a 3-way lists for $399, and I've seen it @ The E Warehouse for around 1/2 price, when they have any of them.

Room modes and equipment settings can play havoc with frequency responses. It is best to use an spl meter and frequency scan. Lacking that, I suggest trying both LARGE and SMALL main speaker settings in both 60 and 80 Hz crossovers to see which you prefer. Always set LFE to Subwoofer Only. Only set redirected bass out to both mains when mains are set to large. See which sounds better to your ears (lacking the actual measurements).

I think you'll end up preferring SMALL setting for the mains and 80 Hz with bass/lfe out to Sub Only for home theater. You may want to try ColdGyre22's suggestion, in particular, for music. For flicks...let the sub do it's thing.

Holy crap, I 've never really looked that close at the LC1. Embarassed to say all this time I thought it was a 2-way.

My main fronts are now 2 E-50's (L/R) + an S38II as CC and they sound absolutely superb to my ears. I do have an EC-35, but have found that having 3 "almost" identical speakers at front stage is definetely the perfect match one can have indeed!

This is aht3 form Lansing Heritage. I am going to go with an SVS sub in the LR. Looking at the PB13U (BTW, I heard they are coming out with a PB13U/2 in '08) Just wondering which colors match best with the subs....

If anyone knows of some great prices in Cherry, please PM me. Buy.com is sold out for now. Also, can anyone describe the beech finish? if so, is it more like light maple or more light a light or medium oak?
