HK 347 vs. v661

Hey everyone. I am in the process of upgrading my HT setup because I'm moving to a space with a larger area. I'm having a little trouble deciding between recievers however.

Right now my gear consists of:
42" Samsung DLP
Yamaha 5950
Klipsch F-2s, C-1, S-1s, and Yamaha 10" sub
Xbox 360 Elite
HD-A2
TWC 8300HD

For the move I am going to upgrade to 7.1, adding another set of S-1s to the rear. I've already bought a Sony VPLHS60 projector with 106" screen. So either reciever will upconvert to HDMI to the projector. Where I begin running into problems is how well they will be able to matrix 5.1 to 7.1. I am familiar with HK's Logic 7, but do not know much about the 661. I should also say that for Christmas this year I will be buying a PS3 and a Wii so I may have to buy a switch. Cost difference between the two is not an issue.

Well from that information what should be the best? Thanks!

For what its worth..i have an older set of Klipsch speakers...KSF 10.5s, C5...I recently demoed a 661 and a HK 247 and the sound quality with the HK was far far superior to that of the 661. The 661 with the Klipsch was extremely bright...to the point of being painful to listen too.

I agree totally. I got the H/K 247 and later upgraded to H/K 745. They mate very well with Klipsch speakers. I have the reference series speakers RF5, RC7, RS35, RW12.

H/K's 7.1 support is pretty pathetic. It appears that only 7.1 analogs will allow a 7.1 source to play, otherwise you have to fake it. And with the 247/347, that isn't possible with LPCM at all. I believe the 247/347 sound better, but for versatility the Yamaha RX-V661 can't be beat at the price point.

the 661 will NOT upconvert all sources to HDMI. It does have HDMI passthru, but if you input something component/s-vid/composite, the "highest" you can output it is component.

You should double check on whether the 661 converts analog video signals to HDMI. I took a quick peek at the manual and it discusses converting composite and s-video to component but I didn't see the A-to-D conversion. I might have just missed it.

EDIT: Guess I didn't miss it...
