The CopperFields Cinema - Page 7

Hey Scott:

I did a quick search for the great lamps/cans you found but could find them anywhere. Wonderful idea for your HT (maybe mine too ), do you have a link or site?

Thanks,

Dave

The cans I got at lowes they are the really small 3 inch with the GU10 halogens in them

Send me a PM dave with your email and I will send you the Ebay link to those bulbs

Using those cans on the front of my screen painted black, these might work for me as well. Looking at the remote they seem to do quite a bit, do you know if they can be dimmed by a dimmer switch? i.e. Grafik Eye

Those are SO COOL! I need to find some for the front of my screen. I was planning to steal the idea from someone who stole the idea from Art's most excellent theater.

I have 5 cans shining down on my screen and 2 cans behind the AT screen to show off the speakers (the way they do it at a good IMAX show) in my plan. These cans are just the ticket!

Yes they can be dimmed from the switch or the remote has dimmer settings on it also They are also GU10 bulbs I do think they come in other styles but not real sure

the can lights I got at Lowe's they are the Utilitech 3" GU10. The bulbs are from a Ebay seller LEDbulbs.biz If you want the link PM me your email.

I found that the IR on the bulb mite have to be hooked into another IR setup. when I tested it you had to be pretty straight on to get the remote to work. Since I have not installed these yet I wont know until then

Thanks, W00ley. I'll try to find the bulbs online.

I have the same cans you mentioned for over my bar area. I haven't installed them yet, as I'm going to do the remodel install, as it looks easier than fooling with those silly brackets (and attempting to cut the precise hole in the drywall around the installed fixtures). The problem that I have for using them in the theater is that they are not IC rated (with the incandescent bulbs). I want to insulate the ceiling of my theater fully and was planning to have the cans IC rated. I don't want to build a box to put them in, as I'm not sure if I can make room for the boxes in the ceiling (but I will if that's the only option).

Was IC rating an issue for you?

I have a question concerning conduit for wiring. Post #177 shows some photos where you are using the blue flexible conduit that seems to be connected to electrical boxes. Why are you using conduit? Are you going to use conduit for speaker wiring too? What is the benefit of doing so?

I'm pulling wire this weekend and was wondering if I need to change gears and use conduit for parts of it. I am going to use conduit for the speaker wiring, though I'm not really sure why.

Thanks for the help.

Heat is the issue with those non IC little cans if you run a LED bulb instead of the halogen I don't really think its a issue since the LED"S do not put off any real heat. You can put your fingers on the face of them and keep it there try doing that with those Minnie halogens. and the LEDS come in a ton of colors or plain old white I will post some photo's of my light install soon

I have not pulled any of my wire yet I am planning that shortly. I ran the conduit just for the fact if any of my wires be it speaker-sub-IR goes bad or I want to add a wire I can just pull out the bad and pull in the new. I wish I would have just run two one inch orange smurf tubes to the front

I have learned alot along the way of the things I would do a bit different. I planned to use wall plates but since I am using a acoustical transparent screen I'm just going to run my speaker wires from source to speaker

It would really suck to do all that work and have one speaker wire or sub cable go bad and not have a way to get to it without tearing up your drywall

CJ good luck on your build and keep asking questions it only helps you in the long run

Not yet but I am thinking seriously about those Jamo's you suggested. I will make a decision in the next week or so.

Hey Scott, thought I'd drop by and see how things are going. Carpet looks great. Keep those pics coming!

FWIW, I looked seriously at the Jamo line before I bought the Monitor Audio's. They make very nice gear.

Evening All

Well I finished up framing the equipment room and the new closet for the bedroom today. Tomorrow I'll finish up re running my electrical wiring and start hanging some drywall back up I think this layout works alot better then the way I had it set up the first time. Now to decided if I just want to build my own rack or buy a middle Atlantic rack.

component room roughly 9x10

Closet is roughly 4x9

Looking out into the 14x14 bedroom

In the spring I will need to cut into the foundation and install two large Egress windows one for each bedroom. I mite hire some pro's to come out and do that

Scott, not using pressure treated lumber for the bottom plates?

W00ly, a fellow Omaha AVSer here. I have the same steel beams in my basement. How did you box them in?

Hey Lyman

I used 3/4 OSB and glued it to the beam with liquid nails. If you go back and look through the photo's on page 1 #25 you can see where I glued on the OSB. I did this before drywall so I could screw the top of the OSB to the 2x8 the builder glued to the top of the beam and then ran a generous amount of the liquid nails along the bottom and clamped it tight left it for a good 2 days before the clamps were removed. for the bottom I did pretty much the same thing but screwed a 2x4 nailer to the wall page 3 #71

Lookin good Scott! Love the chairs. I think your color combo is going to be really nice.

But I thought I saw a little glitch in the ceiling paint in one of the pictures? Maybe you should roll it again.

There's alot of glitch's as I didn't even finish the drywall The one you see up front is a opening to conduit for the fiber optic cable for the star ceiling.

Craig you don't know how pumped I am after dragging the chairs in there last night. I am going to work full steam ahead to get this thing up a running ASAP

Well I spent about 2 hours in a fabric store today that supply's upholstery and drapery fabric. When I walked into this store I could not believe how many fabrics they had - thousands. Needless to say many were way out of my price range starting at $20 a yard on up I brought a few home and the wife and I chose this one

Looks Nice
Check out the drape section at JC Penny. You might be able to find a similar pattern at a cheaper price (if you don't need to go with a larger cut of fabric than a drape panel). I got mine below what the fabric store would charge for the fabric alone. My drapes happened to be on sale...Plus sometimes if you buy something... they will print out a %off coupon that you can use for the next purchase. I bought one valance and the coupon printed out...and then bought all the rest of my drapes and valances with the coupon!

Wow Scott, very nice. How do you plan to do your walls? Is that fabric only on the top, top to bottom, etc.

Hey Judson

I plan to go with black about 4 foot up then the rest the green material. I am also going to do some columns of some sort in between the sconces. I am heading out to place the fabric order now. I am also installing those LED's today I will try and post a little video later tonight of the them in action
post #210 of 1201
That is gonna look awesome!
