Possible Issue with the Samsung HL-T5687

I bought the Samsung HL-T5687 and it's great. However, I have read up on an issue which I am experiencing now, which is a reflection within the tv that cause a small rainbow effect on only one part of the screen, which happens to be the most important spot and that is right in the middle of the screen. It will only appear under certain circumstances, but it is noticeable, and honestly, a bit of a piss off only because I expected this tv to be flawless.

So to the people that are living with this or know anything about it, what do you all think? I don't know if this is something that is worth me bringing the tv back or not but I guess I'm just looking for some ideas as to how to just "forget about it".

I was looking at other DLP options within the same price, size and options (1080p) and the closest I got was a 72" Toshiba, but it's not an LED DLP.

If you are seeing a rainbow effect, then do not switch to another DLP, but rather try calibrating with AVIA or DVE, or go with a different technology such as LCOS.

Has there been any word that a calibration would work for something like this? The effect is caused due to a design flaw within the tv, so I don't see how calibrating the tv will help with something like that

Hi Bill this is not a rainbow effect, its a reflection inside the set that causes a similar effect but shaped in a corner fashion such like this

Honestly I have the same tv and the only time i see it, is rarely during hd dvds or blu rays- i barely see them anymore, it also depends on your lighting and your settings. If you really cant live with it, than it makes the TV a deal breaker, but ive really never found it to be to distracting and as the only "real flaw" of this tv comparing to the many ive bought in the past, its something i can live with and many others can too.

Thanks for the clarification. I know there is an internal reflection seen when the TV is off, but I've never heard of it when on. Dirtbag, are you watching in the dark, or do you have ambient lighting in the room?

Yeah bill if you go into the LED owners thread you'll find many discussions about it, even under my name, people were seeing them but its something you would just shrug off as you would see them maybe once in a whole movie etc, ,I never see them when im playing games either.

I see it alot actually, but then like you said, by returning the tv, I'm forced to give up all the other good things about it.

56" at a good price
1080p at a good price
No bulbs
No color wheel
3D Ready
3 HDMI inputs

I think I'll just live with it and learn to ignore it like a dead pixel on my psp. I was super pissed at first about that too, but I don't even see them anymore.

Thats weird, cuz at thes tart i know i noticed it but unless your constantly looking for it, you shouldnt see it much at all. I see it now maybe once in a movie, if that.
And i never see it in games, I use this tv for about 70% games, 30% HD movie watching.

I obviously notice that the effect is worse in the dark and with the angle that I'm laying while watching it doesn't help. Also, the tv is maybe 6 feet away from me as well. I'm trying to live with it, but sometimes it's tough only because the tv would be perfect without something as stupid as a design flaw.

For the people with this tv who have experienced this issue, has a calibration helped at all? Also, I'm sure most of you have proper room for this tv, do you notice it as much when sitting further away as you're supposed to from a tv like this?

A few years ago, DIY guys were tweaking their CRT RPTV's by going inside and laying, stapling, gluing black velvet type fabric on all areas that could possibly reflect light onto the screen. I'm sure someone could determine the source of this internal reflection and then possibly come up with a fix. I would try anyway, as I'm a self-confessed DIY-er, and I am seriously considering buying this model soon.

I was wondering that myself too. There has to be a fix for something like this. I may get may lazy ass on the phone with Samsung and see what they say about it. I might call up some local shops to to see if they know anything about this.

If you get the TV and try that, please let me know the outcome.

Will do, Dirtbag. Meanwhile, if you find the cause/fix, please post and message me. Turns out I'll be travelling a lot in August, including biz trip to China and Taiwan, so I'm not in such a hurry now and have targeted August 22 to determine best price and place an order.
