While the final cost of the player hasn't been finalized, the device should be ready by October or November and will sell at a roughly 400-Euro ($544) premium compared to a single-format Blu-Ray movie reader by the time it reaches stores. More details should be revealed when the IFA show begins on August 31st.

ummm, I know they've already stated that it wouldn't but - it better have the Reon in there at this price if it plans to sell more than 5. Oh and disc memory, instant on and play, HD sound, and it better make espresso too.
That price is super cheap for a universal player of both formats. After a few months on the market it will surely be found for even cheaper than $545 US.
Um, a $544 premium to a roughly $500 BD player would be over a grand. Still cheaper than the current LG; but I agree it should have the Reon at that price; with BD Profile 1.1, HD DVD w/ iHD and Reon it would be worth it to me, esp if it had TrueHD and DTS-MA. With the features announced so far (no Reon, etc) I'll have to wait and see. But PQ wise a Reon-based universal would be an awesome player to play all formats, including DVD.
So lets see, spend a extra $544 for the single box, or buy a PS3, and a A20, and still have some cash left over for movies and games. And if the universal breaks you can't watch anything. Where can I sign up!!

I suspect the premium will be less in the USA, we Europeans normally get a little ripped off. Expect a max of $400 premium.

Interesting that the article pretty much claims BD Live support for the player. If this thing supports Full HDDVD, BD Live and all sound formats then I think it might well be worth $1000.

It's already on my Xmas list!

This thing just keeps getting better...

Wow. That price is super. I bet it'll be around $799 even though I see the 400 Euro is noted. If it supports all the playability options this is a fine player.

Quick question. I know some people are upset that this unit only does 60 Frames Per Second for HD-DVD. What exactly does this mean? Why is it important to have 24FPS?
HD-A2 = $250
PS3 = $500

Total = $750

If one dies you have the other. No single point of failure !!!

The movie is stored on the disc as 1080p24. If you can take it off of the disc that way and pass it on with minimal processing, you'll get a better picture. That's assuming your TV accepts 1080p24.

PS. If it doesn't have a REON chip, it won't have as good a picture as some of the separates.

Why do you think it will not support 24p for HD DVD? The complete report in Electronista http://www.electronista.com/articles...d.launch.info/ sounds like it will:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...868&p=10956910
"will support all the features of either movie format" and "can output movies at either a film-native 24 frames per second or as quickly as 60 frames per second for faster videos." There is no mention of any difference between the two formats as far as frame rate goes.

you guys who are concerned about reduncy - do you have a spare HDTV, and AVR as well?

I'll take one component that does the job of two, over two seperate components cluttering up my Home Theater any day!

Details of the Samsung are still incomplete but will hopefully be fully disclosed by its showing in August. I've had the LG and it was OK. I was particularly pleased with the 1080p/24 out of both formats.

The Samsung is unclear on 1080p/24 for HD-DVD but will have it for Blu-Ray. Other than that, I think the advantage at this point is going to Samsung: HDi & BDLive compatibility. Ethernet connectivity and advanced audio. Hopefully it will include the Reon chip and rank up there with the current kings of upconverting (XA2 & BD-P1200, both with the Reon).

I see you are a fellow Tennessean. Where are you in TN?

Martin, TN here. Just moved from Nashville.

Another point as to the best dual players: there is only one right now, the LG BH-100. Samsung is the only other manufacturer with an announced dual player, the BD-P5000. It will be available in October. LG is rumored to have a 2nd generation in the works, I'd be surprised if they didn't formally announce it before the Samsung hits the market. Otherwise, they'll risk losing customers who would have waited.

Those are the only strong prospects. Some here have speculated that Onkyo will offer a dual player but nothing even semi-official has surfaced about that.

Well, Martin TN. I actually live in Franklin, TN. but most people have not heard of it so it is easier to just say Nashville, TN.

I will purchase a High-End Dual Purpose HD/BR Player when the dust settles I guess. Don't want to jump to Fast and then kick myself when the Great DVD Players come out Later. I have been guilty of wanting to be 1st with equipment and the last time I jumped the gun it cost me another $5,000.00 Dollars to upgrade. Example: Runco VX5000 to the Runco VX5000ci. It cost me $5K and I had not even took delivery of the 5000 model yet. So I am more cautious now.

Hey, I'm in Johnson City TN. Anyway, I'm also one who prefers to have one universal component over two separate ones, as long as it is reliable and of decent quality. I'll be taking a look at the Samsung player as soon as it hits the market later this year.

Samsung are definitely on fire.

Looks like they'll have the first BD 1.1 and BD 2.0 player on the market later this year with the BD-P1400 with full Dolby and DTS advanced audio codec decoding.

With the price of $545USD in Europe I would expect you could pick it up for $500 here in the US shortly after it comes out.

Think that's a typo/bad info in the article. Original release was a $545 premium over existing Blu-Ray players.

Typo - the price will be 400 Euros more expensive than a standalone Blu-ray player. Unless the BD-P1000 has dropped to 10 Euros, it will be over $1000 easy when it hits the US.

it seems like most of the websites are over-looking the "premium over existing blu-ray players" part of the original statement by Samsung.
That's a shame, because so many people are going to be expecting a price of under $600, thanks to the hundreds of websites that just re-vamp old reports.
Some sites today are even reporting that the unit will be out next month in Europe.
I hope they don't get bad press when they announce the "actual" price.

Or perhaps the original was the typo and indeed it will be 400 or $545 - which will bury the BDP1000 but also kill everybody else on the market.

It would be a very smart move from Smasung, I think, to launch a combo with a 400-500 price tag.
