Samsung has released more information about its upcoming BDP-UP5000 hybrid player, including a targeted release date.

The company said Wednesday that it plans to unleash its new player (which was originally announced several months back) in October or November of this year. Yesterday's announcement was made at a preparation event for the IFA tradeshow in Germany, where Samsung is expected to display the player in late August.

Unlike LG's already released BH100 dual-format player, Samsung says its BDP-UP5000 will support all features of both formats (including BD-Java and HDi, as well as web-enabled supplements on both formats, via an Ethernet connection).

Samsung has yet to announce pricing for its new hybrid player, but it is expected to retail at a lower price than the LG player's current $1199.99.

I'm going to give this player a good look see...If it's full featured I might sell my A2 and PS3 on Ebay and pick it up.

I take that back...I will keep the A2 for the bedroom...but the PS3 goes! I'm not into gaming!

jwv651 - Keep me in mind if you decide to dump the PS3

On Topic - I've kept this Samsung player in the back of my mind for a while now. Can't wait until more details come out about it.

An even juicier report. Get a look at the estimated price! [edit: but see below] IFA is just before CEDIA where more US info would be expected.

Samsung today provided extra details about its upcoming Blu-Ray and HD DVD combo player at an event in advance of Berlin's IFA media expo. The BDP-UP5000 will support all the features of either movie format, including Internet extras through an Ethernet connection that both formats will recognize. It should also eliminate the stilted motion effects caused by pulldown conversion and can output movies at either a film-native 24 frames per second or as quickly as 60 frames per second for faster videos. No trouble is expected with playing movies at a full 1080p, Samsung says.

While the final cost of the player hasn't been finalized, the device should be ready by October or November and will sell at a roughly 400-Euro ($544) premium compared to a single-format Blu-Ray movie reader by the time it reaches stores. More details should be revealed when the IFA show begins on August 31st. [via Heise]

LATER EDIT. TV Predictions http://www.tvpredictions.com/samsung070507.htm said the price would be "below $600" and cited AfterDawn. AfterDawn http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/10261.cfm said it would have a $545 US price tag and cited Electronista. Electronista is the source of the quote I used above. In my haste I missed their phrase "premium compared to a single-format Blu-Ray movie reader..." Depending on what you consider the price of a Blu-ray player, this could put the price of the duo-player at $900 or $1000.

At first I thought this was saying it'll cost about $544. But, I think it means it'll be $544 over the price of a standalone single-format player.

Bill - that $544 means $544 MORE than current BD players...the premium is the cost above.

You are right. As best I can tell the source I quoted, Electronista, is the original and uses the word "premium." TV Predictions http://www.tvpredictions.com/samsung070507.htm said the price would be "below $600" and cited AfterDawn. AfterDawn http://www.afterdawn.com/news/archive/10261.cfm said it would have a $545 US price tag and cited Electronista.

I will edit my original post to reflect this.
