If I had known I would only receive 2 that I wanted (in the box with the player) then I would have gone BluRay. The disc offer was the primary reason I went with the player, BEFORE discontinuation.
If you went to Best Buy, and they told you that you could order 5 DVDs for a price, and when you came back they no longer made them, but Best Buy picked 5 random crappy movies for you instead, would you not be upset? The fact is people are getting the movies that I requested; in just one day there has been a post since mine where this has taken place.
Also, call it a free promotion all you want, but Toshiba, under guidance from Jodi Sally and her marketing agencies, took a chance on the income that would be received from the players minus the costs of any Out of Pocket costs from promotions. Their EBITA was based on that and they knew what they were getting into, loss or not. AKA, we paid for them when we bought the player.
At the end of the day, if I knew they were REALLY out of the movies I selected and not just pulling 5 random ones off the shelf to save time, or if I had bought my player after the discontinuation, I wouldn't be as unhappy. But alas, neither of those are the case.
And in the interim, we were held hostage on not buying the movies that we selected. I held off on Pitch Black, U2 and a few others. Now I have to sell my 2nd copy of Bourne and Norbit for probably less than five bucks and find the ones that I requested.
There was a simple solution to this. Email us and give us an alternative choice if none of the movies were available. It asked for you email. I would have been cool with Sleepy Hollow, Last Samarai, children of men, knocked up........
Instead I got 2 I dont want (norbit & hustle and flow) and 2 dups (BI and HP). So for me, I paid $150 for 2 movies in the box and 1 extra movie that I will take from the rebate (last samarai). BI and norbit are virtually worthless. And the other I well.... explained that already.
I must admit it ticked me off at Toshiba's expense. I have an onkyo 805 now and will use the A3 I got strictly as a back up.
I won't get a toshiba BD if they make one nor will I get anything else of theirs for awhile (laptop, tv...). Seeing how well they have taken care of us on this, I also have no interest on their new SUC "bluray killer" either. (Super UpConversion)
