Huh? Looking at the reconstruction above you can see that they further enhanced the hell out at least some of the scenes, leading to horribly pronouced grain and mighty halos. The halos ARE a direct result of the sharpening here.

Some other shots look like they do indeed show a bit more real detail. Why didn't they just leave the soft shots alone.

So they trade everyones soft, reasonably non-edgy, compression artefact ladden copy of TFE with an artifically grainy, real edgy version which is at least good from the compression side. Hooray!

The problem is the transfer. My hope would have been a new state-of-the-art transfer. Oh well.

They leave that for the tripple dip....

Was going to buy this remaster, will now wait for a real reMASTER!

You're going to be in for a very very long wait then...

exactly! The old comparison shots were pretty clear to me as well.
I think alot of the red devils (hey, if they're gonna call us smurfs...) were making the original BD sound worse than it really was saying it looked no better than the Superbit. That or they like to smoke crack....

Hi Bjoern! Great to see you again, been awhile.
What are you up to? Any new comps. on your site...?

d

Inetersting, some people have complained that the new one is rather "grainy"...
Maybe it's the best they could make it look barring a full blown restoration...?

Wow, Bjoern came out of nowhere.

That restruction shot from the new remaster does look a little edge enhanced. Possibly to compensate for the softness since it's a visual effects shot. The non VFX shots we've seen so far look pretty good though.

Am I the only person here who can barely notice any differences in these comparisons? IRL, however, the difference between a DVD and an HD source is night-and-day to me...

This is a new transfer from the IP. Or do you say it's new but not state of the art?

I guess people are still not happy with the remastered version!!
am I right?
It's a very noticeable improvement over the previous Mpeg2 Blu-Ray and Superbit SD-DVD. It is not a brand new film either so you can't expect it to look like POTC or Apocalypto.. From the looks of it, it should be upper tier 1...

I see LOTS of difference from the original.

Remember this was an early film to use lots of CGI. It's possible that some scenes were softened intentionally on film in order to help "blend" live-shot footage with CGI and help to obscure some of the computer-signature.

In any case, as long as the new transfer looks like the interpositive it's taken from, then it's doing its job.

From the photos, it's not all that impressive. But I'll wait for some reviews before passing judgment. Of course, if I happen to see a copy in stores tomorrow, I'll likely snatch it right up

All that's proof of is that Best Buy doesn't keep their web site very well updated.

Interesting I was unaware that the remastered Fifth Element was not due to be available for sale until this week.

I was at my local Best Buy Saturday and the disc was on the shelf for sale already

Remaster????

My BB also had a copy, but per the discussion here on how to differentiate, it was NOT the remaster.

I checked Best Buy's inventory system yesterday and there was no listing for the remastered version and no additional orders for the original, since I believe they both use the same SKU. So it looks like Best Buy won't have any for a while.

Just got mine today from dvdpacific. Looks great. I was not expecting much but there is a clear improvement.

Picked up a copy at Target yesterday (last/only one on the shelf) and watched it when I got home. I never saw the old version but it did look great, especially face closeups.

Just got notification from Amazon that my copy shipped today for delivery on Wed. I have Prime.
