I'm not a big Onkyo fan, but others like them fine.

Here's a couple I tried with + and - about them:

Harmon Kardon 247 or 347 - Great 5.1 receiver, with a warm sound that many really like. 2 HDMI inputs, one out and it 'upconverts' component video to 720p HDMI. OSD also in HDMI inputs.

Yamaha RX-V661 - Fantastic 7.1 receiver with pure, natural sound. 2 HDMI in/1 out. NO upconvert from component video and OSD is not useable from HDMI inputs. Big plus is that it allows layering of Dolby IIx over LPCM 5.1 to give a 7.1 sound. I think this is the only one in this price range that allows that.

check the amps, receivers thread here on this forum for all you would ever want to know about these and others.

I have used both with my S300 and was very pleased with them. However the HK doesn't do 7.1 LPCM with HDMI, which is why I now have the Yamaha.

Thanks, for the advice, i also did check out some of Yamaha stuff but wasn't too sure about them.I am kinda old school Sony or Fisher.
S300 will be hooked up to a sony xbr2 1080p..so should I still look for a reciever that does upconverting.

It depends. What else will be connected?

In the Sony line, take a look at the DG910. Same price range, 3 HDMI inputs/1 output.

But really, do some reading in the amp and receivers thread. Lots of good info about these and other receivers as well as how they work with the BD and HDDVD players too.

is there a way to turn off sound through hdmi on this player? Like if I connect it to the tv through hdmi for picture and through 5.1 analog to the AV for sound, will the sound still go through hdmi to the tv? I don't want that.

Well personally I would wait and get the Onkyo 705. It is a great receiver that will do 7.1 post processing on top of 5.1 sources. Most importantly though it will pass 1080p24, the Yamaha RX-V661 which is a great receiver does not do this. If you don't need post processing on top of 5.1 sources look at the 605.

I don't believe the XBR supports HDMI 1.3. If that's the case I have a brand spanking new Onkyo TX-SR674B I can sell ya! =)

HDMI 1.3 projector/blue ray player/ HDMI 1.1 receiver =(

HDMI 1.3 projector/blue ray player/ HDMI 1.1 receiver =(

It supports it, although the TV itself is not hdmi 1.3, hdmi 1.3 is backward compatible.

I'm in the process of buying my components for my new HT and have been following the discussion of the Sony's S300 ability/inability to decode TrueHD. I currently have the Onkyo Integra DTR 7.8 which I believe does have the ability to decode TrueHD. Will the S300 pass the TrueHD signal to the receiver, of which I have a Paradigm Monitor series 7.1 setup? the JVC - RS1 is my projector with a prismasonic lens for a 2.35:1 setup.

I'm been debating on which blu-ray player to get. I think I have the capability in my receiver to decode the audio but I'm not sure if the s300 will send it to it. All connections would be HDMI. (the Integra does support HDMI 1.3)

Anyone have any word of advice on this one?

Thanks

Steve

S300 does not decode trueHD nor does it send it via bitsream to be decoded by the receiver.

Steve, do yourself a favor and get a PS3! I had the S300 and took it back.It doesn't do the HD audio codecs out of the box.The PS3 does..I had an integra DTR 7.2.. I just bought an Onkyo 805. I love it..Also,Integra isn't Onkyo..Its the theater grade reviever.Integra is higher quality.Getting back to the topic at hand..The PS3 is the way to go..You won't be upgrading your s300 in 2 months..The ps3 can do it all now, except the ma..But that will be avaliable soon I'm sure with a firmware update..
