Dual layer recorders

Considering what to buy.

Are there any inexpensive (under $150) dual layer DVD recorders out there. I'm not sure if I should spurge to get a good brand name (with features like HDMI)now or just get a cheap no name brand to use in place of my VCR.

I don't know which DVD recorders can record dual layer but it sure isn't a feature I would look for. I have 3 Panasonic DVD recorders (E100, E95 & E85) and I don't know if any of them can record on dual layer DVD's and I don't care. The last I heard dual layer blanks cost about 10 times as much as a single layer blank. That is enough to avoid them for me.

I have a Sony DVD player with a HDMI output and it is plugged into the HDMI input on my Viewsonic 32" HD LCD TV set. I don't like it! I makes every DVD I play look 16x9 and none of them are 16x9. I am tired of looking at fat people and oval circles. The control on my TV can't force the display into 4x3 mode when playing a 4x3 DVD through the HDMI input and I can't find any control on the DVD player that can correct the problem either. So I am about to remove the HDMI cable and use a S-Video or Composite cable so the TV can display 4x3 DVD's in 4x3 mode. HDMI is a much over rated feature in my book.

Panasonic DMR EZ17 if on sale

I find Verbatim DL +Rs on sale for $1.50, vs $.23 for SLs. I only use DLs for movies longer than what will fit on a SL disc in SP. But, $1.50 is little enough to pay for a good sharp copy of a movie. My only complaint it that they don't burn, or scan, at as high a speed as a SL disc.
