Does anybody know if this is upgradable (firmware flash)? I'm looking for something to replace my old sony ta-e9000es and this is something that i'm considering. I've called one of my local reps and he said that he could probably get his hands on one during the week of the 22nd for $1600 + 7% tax (New Jersey). Does anybody have anything else that they'd recommend looking into as well? I'm open to suggestions. I've looked at rotel but am not considering them anymore due to the fact that they're soooo sloooowwww in incorporating new products. I called their tech department and they said that only thing that is going to change in their new processor is the video end (hdmi) and remote. No new sound formats or anything. I've never even saw an onkyo or integra in person and if someone could comment on their build/sound quality i'd appreciate it. My sony is built like a tank with tons of things to reduce noise, but it's showing its age now. This integra doesn't seem to be as quiet though (0.05% distortion). I guess the old saying is true. They don't make them like to used to. My price range is around the price of this unit ($1600) but could go as high as $3,000 if needed for a noticable improvment. I'm thinking that anything newer than my sony will be a noticable improvment. Thank you for any help that you can offer.

One other thing... Where'd the chad remote go? Isn't this an upgrade from the DTC-9.4? I just assumed it had the chad until I looked in the manual.

Ouch yeah another month, and not be able use your Integra, once you get it.

BTW what made you to go with the Emotiva? Just curious.

I did some research on the Audessey calibration system. Ifyou want it do properly you CANNOT use the included and less accurate microphone and built in firmware in the 9.8.
Rather you need an individually calibrated microphone, preamp and "professional" software (on the MultEQ Pro CD). However this system is only available to installers:

So what will the typical consumer end up doing with this feature? Audyssey themselves frankly gives us the answer:
"This is why, after thirty plus years of trying this method most people don't like the results and turn it off."

This system qualifies as one of those "gadgets from hell" as you have no control over it. Change your seating position then you need to call the installer back out:

I don't care about processing time as long as audio and video are in sync when I watch the show/movie.

I like the idea of "dual" HDMI outputs. My SXRD allows separate calibration for each input. Ideally, I would calibrate each component and input combination; however, there are now obvious advantages for using the pre processor or receiver to "switch" and have access to the HDMI sound. But, if one (or two) components are "different" (but close) from others, I can give them their own output and calibrate that input on the TV accordingly.

Thinking about swapping my StageOne for the 9.8 - HDMI, new audio, EQ, main selling points for me.

If I understand you correctly, you are implying that Audyssey is stating most people don't like Audyssey MultEQ and will turn it off. The reference you pointed to actually refers to graphic and parametric equalizers, not Audyssey. Audyssey is saying that graphic and parametric equalizers haven't worked well (for the last 30 years) since they only work in the frequency domain and their software is a step beyond.

Given all the DTC 9.8 has to offer, at least on paper, does anyone know what might become of the Integra Research RDC 7.1? Will there be an Integra Research version of the DTC 9.8? An Integra Research unit positioned as a step up from the DTC 9.8?

As far as I can tell the Onkyo PR-SC885P sold in the pro line is essentially the same product. Any Onkyo pro retailer should be able to sell it on-line. It is due out next month.

The feature set for the 9.8 sounds suspiciously like what has been released so far (and mentioned by their rep at AVSforum) on the Sherwood Newcastle next gen receivers and pre/pros, including use of the Reon VP and Audissey EQ. I wonder if SN did the OEM on the Onkyo models with the option to use the basic design for their own branded products? Anyone know if that is the case?

People who has no intention to buy this product, or are closet Onkyo haters should "cross their fingers" somewhere else! You know who you are!

Integra is made in Japan, Sherwood is made by Etronics in Korea, I don't think they would have anything shared when it came to manufacturing these new pre-amps

Nope. Onkyo designs and manufactures their own products.

Costs more ($1800 vs $1600), gives less (unless you use it in a "pro" environment). The Onkyo Pro version is rack mounted by default. It has a 2 year warranty good in a "Pro" environment. Are you a DJ...run a House of Worship? This one's for you!

The Integra version has a 3 year warranty, but that's not valid in a "Pro" environment (read the fine print). The rack mount kit is < $100.

The RDC-7.1 was discontinued and is SOLD OUT. But that's an Integra Research product, not Integra.

There will follow-on products...and Integra will be introducing a line of separates down the road, not just this one.

How are you planning on routing things with your VP-50 in the mix? It's just 1.1, so I'm wondering what will be the best way to rout all my sources, the VP and this Pre/pro. I love having my sources go to the VP first as I have different profiles, plus the lip sync, but that effectively kills the whole benefit of HMDI 1.3 audio processing.

Well, with both RS-232 and ethernet ports, I'd say it's a yes... there are three different sets of firmware in the units.

Integra products have been firmware upgradable for years.

Another question... As i've never heard or seen an integra product until a few days ago from this forum. What's the difference between integra research and integra? They both look the same.

Can you explain what you mean by "gives less"? As far as I can tell, the specs and features are identical. The cost difference will disappear, or even favor the Pro model when they become available from internet sellers.

This should be rather interesting, because there are a lot of pro sound dealers that discount rather heavily. And that could in fact help erase the price differential when they both end up at whatever their respective 'street prices' will be, and it could maybe even have it still end up costing less than the consumer version.
