Martin Logan Owners Thread - Page 9

hi guys first post here. I have a Denon 2313 (kicking myself that I did not wait for the X4000 for only $400 more so if somebody wants a 30 day old 2313 for $500 let me know) and the cheapo MLT-2 5.1 setup. I wanted to start building up a motion series setup. I have a couple of options in my price range at the moment: a pair of used LX-16s for $360, a pair of used 10s for $190, or a pair of new 4s for $400. If I go for the 10s I will likely see if the guy getting rid of his 10s and dynamo 500s is willing to let those go for the price of a set of 4s (I already sent him a PM). I am planning to audition the 10s tomorrow since I have only heard the 20s. I was underwhelmed regardint the 20s mid and bass but that tweeter is amazing. If I get any of the bookshelfs they would be mains for a year or maybe two since I am buying a house (closing in July) then moving them to surrounds when I can afford the 40s. What do you guys suggest? The MLT-2s have been good for my small room now but I want something descent for my first home. I listen to music at fairly loud levels and have it running most of the time in the afternoon, then usually watch a movie every evening. I love the sound of the 40s as far as my taste. Thanks!

Well, what is your ultimate goal surround sound wise? I like the LX 16's I got. I put them on Sanus Steel Series stands. However, I'm using them for wide speakers. I'm sure if you didn't try and push the volumne level to high, you could use them, then use them as surrounds or wide channel speakers when you got the Motion 40's. I can't comment on the Motion 4's because mine don't arrive until tommorrow.

I am pretty satisfied with a 5.1 setup. But as movies start getting recorded in 7.1 here and there I might use them. Basically, I am not worried about DSX quite yet. If I could use the FXs I would do those for surrounds and the LX16s for rear surrounds in a 7,.1 with 40s as mains and a 30 center. Only issues with that is if I get any of these I know I will need to replace the center and at the moment I cannot afford more than the Motion 8. So I might have to forgoe the 30. Let me know what you think of the 4s, (I will keep break in into account)

If I did trade up to the X400 then my ultimate goal would be a 7.2 system for movies/theater and a seperate set of electrostats in 2.2 configuration since the X4000 has enough speaker posts to connect 9 channels and can power 7 at a time. But if I stick with the 2313 then just 7.2 is good enough as long as I get some 40s for mains eventually

I don;t mean a trade. I was talking cost wise what yoy would get for what I offered in the PM. No worries if you are not interested. If you were selling 12s I would be much more interested.

When I put my set together 6 months ago I was in the same situation and had to pass on the Motion 30 due to budget constraints. I wound up going with a Motion C (along with 4 LX16s). I am now in a position that I can move up to the Motion 30. Consequently, I have a like new Motion C available for significantly less than a Motion 8 if you are interested starting with that and upgrading later.

Unless you absolutely need the slim form factor, I would go with something else. The SLM speakers FR is the same as the smaller Motion 2's but cost 2.5 x more even though they use the same drivers. They look very nice but are a poor value when it comes to performance

Got my Motion 4's installed last night for my Height speakers - I'll be testing the full set up tonite - 11.1 !! smile.gif

You can just make out the Motion 4's near the ceiling !!
Let me know how it sounds. My ceiling aint high enough I don't think to even run something like that
post #255 of 731
It sounded awesome ! Watched some of Black Hawk Down, some Master and Commander, and then got hooked watching Hero with Jet Li. Man - what a sound track! Honestly, if you have a reciever that can do the Wide channel speakers, and your ceiling isn't really high enough or suitable for Height speakers, the Wides were in improvement over my previous 7.1 for sure.

The Motion 4's seem plenty powerful and loud enough for the Height effects speakers, without being too big and bulky. They mount nicely on the wall ( I'm using Def Tech swivel mounts ).

I just knew I'd lose sleep knowing 2 channels were going unused! Now I can sleep soundly............ smile.gif

Tonite the Martin Logans get a work out watching Looper ! smile.gifeek.gif
post #258 of 731
The Martin Logans and the Denon 4520 ( with an Emotiva XPA 200 helping ) totally rocked watching Looper last night! First real test of the 11.1 Martin Logan / Denon system. Extremely detailed and 3 dimensional sounding soundfield. Just slammed the room when called for ( with the help of an SVS cylinder sub ). Everyone watching had been in the thetaer many many times in the past. They loved the Martin Logans and the 11.1 setup using the new 4520 reciever. The sound is so awesome, they are coming back over tonite to watch another movie !! smile.gif And they all commented on how dialog was much easier to understand, so the Motion 8 center works just fine - even in my extremely wide seating situation. I credit the Audyseey XT32 in the 4520 for making the difference.
Wow amazing. Maybe i am just going def. I do work in a factory so my motion c is probably ok. I don't have enough room for wides or heights frown.gif
post #260 of 731
Watched Fast Five tonite for fun. Great audio demo track. I'm finding that the Martin Logan speakers can be played louder than my previous speakers ( Axiom's ) with far less ear fatigue. What a slamming soundtrack. smile.gif

Do you have a external amp for lcr?
I'm using an Emotiva XPA 200 amp for the L & R Motion 40's. Everything seems to have way more than enough power. A volumn level of 84 on the 4520 is maximum I can listen at ( when my wife is gone and my " loud movie loving friends " are here. . Most times I won't have it that loud. I was going to get amore powerful amp, but 150 watts / channel( 8 ohms - the ML's are of course 4 ohm ) matches the 4520, so I figured why spend the extra money. So far, so good.

Do you have your fronts facing forward or in towards middle listening area
post #264 of 731
Updated pictures of my room!! TV stand is an ikea bookshelf turned sideways. I used some 2x4's I had sitting around to make a frame to go underneath it so it wouldn't warp since it wasn't designed for this purpose. The legs I painted to match the bookcase and bought from Home Depot. All in all, for around $90 i think it turned out pretty well. My wife likes the minimalistic look.

I must say that the TV used to look kind of big on it's own since it's a small room, but with the Montis next to it the TV looks tiny eek.gif

Next on my list of things to do is convince the wife that acoustic panels aren't ugly and I should be allowed to hang them on the walls.

They are somewhat toed in to the center. I had to roll up the screen to get a decent photo since the room is so dark now -

And here is one of the wide channel speakers on a Sanus Steel stand -

Man I wish I had room for wides. Both of your guys pics look good. I see they are slightly pointed to center of listening area
post #268 of 731
Beautiful speakers guys! Why is everyone so obsessed with Looper? That was one of the worst movies I've ever seen! I want those 2 hours of my life back!
Ya, my strange wide / shallow theater had some upsides when it comes to 11.1 speaker placement - who knew !! smile.gif

I have to say that I think the Martin Logan Motion series speakers are under rated - certainly in my home theater they have improved my sound, even with my previous 7.1 setup. More so with the 4520 installed. And with the full 11.1 set up, there is no comparison!

Certainly having the AVR-4520 with MultEQ XT32 helps. I'm thinking about getting the new AVR-X4000 with XT32 and SubEQ but we will see how receptive the wife is to the idea...
