Unreal Tournament 3!

Yea, probably a timed exclusive but the PS3 will have support for mods and other user-created content. Something Microsoft and Epic have been at odds with from the get go.

It's big, it's bad, and it's coming to the PlayStation 3 this November.

As part of Sony's annual press conference here at E3 2007, the company revealed that Epic's Unreal Tournament 3 would be coming exclusively to the PlayStation 3 this November. While that sounds like a real bummer for PC owners, you need to remember that, for whatever reason, the console makers seem to forget that the PC exists. So the game will be releasing on the PlayStation 3 and the PC this November. Regardless of all that, Midway brought the PlayStation 3 version to Sony's press conference, and we got a chance to play this long-awaited first-person shooter on its new console home.

This first-person shooter appears to be running quite well on the PlayStation 3, with plenty of graphical detail from top to bottom, all running at a good, firm frame rate. The demo station we saw was running a standard deathmatch against bots, allowing us to get a good feel for the controls. R1 and L1 handle your primary and alternate fire. R2 is used for dodging, something that required you to double tap the movement keys on the PC. Epic's Jeff Morris, who was on hand to talk about the game, commented that he's been dodging much more frequently on the PS3 due to this easy-to-use controller mapping.

Aside from the PS3 version looking to be on par with the PC version, the other key thing to know is that the PS3 version of the game will have support for mods and other user-created content, in a way that sounds like it will be a first for consoles. Mods built for the PC version will work on the PS3 version of the game. Right now, Epic is testing this functionality by copying the content onto a memory stick and then copying that to the PS3 hard drive, but they're hoping to get the PC removed from that equation and make mod and map downloading a part of the PS3 version. To speed up loading overall, the game can be completely installed to the PS3 hard drive, but you'll still need to have the disc in the drive for copy protection purposes.

To hear Epic describe it, the differences between the PS3 and PC versions are few, and aside from the controller differences, the two versions do look quite similar. For one, the game will implement Sixaxis tilt control for steering the hoverboard or piloting the redeemer missile, which is a super weapon that you can steer into targets. Game speed and the size of collision areas are also being adjusted a bit to better tune the game for gamepads.

Overall, the PlayStation 3 version looks pretty impressive, and the thought of mod support just might make it a viable alternative for a series that's primarily thought of as a PC franchise. It'll be interesting to see how the two versions stack up when they hit stores this November.

Yeah, as a 360 owner I'm pretty jealous right now

This was the game I was really looking forward to. Damn you Halo for pushing it back!!

I still play Unreal Tournament on ps2...still love that game.

A sole reason to own a ps3.

The trailer at the PSN store looks amazing. So much variety and color going on, I'm sold

I love how they have bots as well, good to see a developer not leaving that out for those who can't play online or just like to play bots from time to time.

Getting user made maps, etc is a huge plus as well.

What about mouse and keyboard support for the PS3 version?
I thought the trailer was pretty neat, but it still reminds me of Unreal Tournament with nicer graphics and vehicles.

I thought the original was nice, but got bored with it because of how slow it was. Never tried any of the mods that were available.

Having a mouse and keyboard is a bonus, I just hope that this isn't going to be the only FPS out there that will have support for it.

Ohh I love some UT... Can't wait for this one. I hope its just as fast and furious as the last one.

AFAIK it's supposed to be the first game that supports BT M/KB support on the PS3.

Remember, this game supports PC mods as well.

It blew my mind away @ GDC06, and 07, but now it completly destroyed it... :P

Yep! Only on PS3.

Problem I have is that my BT M/KB are only BT1.1, which I think are going to be way too slow and I suck on gamepad. I might just forget it and end up buying the PC version instead. I'm already running Vista Home, a 2Gb E6600 overclocked, Radeon X1800XT 512Mb (I'll upgrade this next).

With Crysis coming, and so many other games, does it even pay to buy this game on a PS3? I think it would perform better on my PC.

LOL...did you read the question? Why do you need to post this......Yes I know, part of the reason I bought a PS# was for M/K support on FPS titles. This way i can pwn your nub arses on my 110 inch screen!

I think there will be balance issues with KB/M v. controller matches, of course I will be on the winning side so why should I care

Wonder if you'll be able to playonline with PC gamers....

Why is there so much damn FOG in almost every screenshot/movie trailer I see for UT3???

Frankly, I was more impressed by CoD4 trailer on the PSN Store than the one for UT3...

I doubt it, although the mods will be interchangable.

Crap.

Dumbing it down for gamepad=bad. Hopefully the PC version won't get dumbed down like that. Still, it looks like a blast to play, and could very welll be the anti-Halo this year. Although, most of the franchise faithful will proabably get the PC version.

Mods won't mean much if players can't run a dedicated server.

Which is why I would hope this would be cross platform, so that the PS3 crowd gets to actually use the mods over a dedicated server rather than host advantage.

Unless, Epic is going to host dedicated servers like Insomniac, in which case, you'd never be able to play some of the mods unless Insomniac dedicates a server to it.

I'm pretty sure you can run your own dedicated servers. I think R6 & warhawk allows you to. YOu'd need a second ps3 though.

I'm hoping they're going to dedicate a server,but I'm not exactly holding my breath. It's probably P2P.
There's actually a Gamespot article about it that says they trying to get it to load the entire PS3 version on your HD, (and only needing the disc in for copy protection) and this would probably enable you to run a dedicated server with mods.

Would have been nice if only for the larger base of players.

I had been gaming exclusively on the PC for the past generation so I was shocked to find that the PS3 (with some games) allowed you to play online against other platfoms like PS2/PC.
They'll probably leave it up to the community. In which case, I'm going to buy another PS3 and a second connection, and rent it out as a dedicated server. Money in the bank.

Mmmmmmm, my beloved Manta in the fourth screenie down brings wigglies to my tummy. I'm in a quandry over which port to buy - the PC version or the PS3 one. UT3 is supposed to fully support mouse/keyboard, which is a requirement for me, on the PS3, but I have a feeling the PC version will look better or have smoother framerates. The PS3 may be the most advanced console, but it's already fallen behind PCs in terms of technology, particularly video GPU hardware.

Mod support is a necessity, that's the only thing that's kept UT2004 alive after almost 4 years - the fantastic mods and maps developed by the community.
This is such great news. Good to know that real people are playing a real game demo on real PS3 hardware and they are real happy with it.

We've got some sweet games coming this year. I've got my kb+m ready.

As for mods, I wanna get that UT 2004 mod that was a Counter Strike clone working on the PS3. An official port of Red Orchestra on Blu-ray would be even better.

Hopefully ET:QW will fare just as well on the PS3.

Console versions have never been able to keep up. Even though this one will historically be the most "compatible" one so far with the map/mod editor interchangable, with the hardware upgradable on the PC, as you say the PS3 version is already obsolete.

Since I already invested $80 in Vista Home this year I think I'm leaning towards the PC version (but I'll probably need to upgrade my videocard.) Even without a crossfire mobo I suspect my E6600 will dominate a PS3 with a decent mid-range videocard.

i don't know how they compared, but GS reported that the PS3 version looks on par with the PC version. from what i hear, the PC version will support dx10, but other than that, i think they will look identical.

if i do ever end up picking this up, i may actually consider getting it on PS3 as i haven't upgraded my PC for over 2 years. it will most likely run better on PS3 than my PC. it will also be nice to play it on my 40" samsung LCD rather than my 19" LCD monitor.

Damn it, now I have to buy another game this year. Stupid Sony and Epic.
