Another Sony Exec is making bold claims. This time he attacks the Xbox 360 and claims that HD DVD would be dead in a "few months".

E3: Sony's Dille: Xbox 360 Not Sustainable, HD-DVD Dead Within Months
Talking to Gamasutra during a one-on-one interview, Peter Dille, the new senior vice president of marketing for PlayStation, maintained that the 360 cannot sustain itself over a 10 year cycle - and also stated that he believes HD-DVD will be dead within months. Here's an excerpt of the conversation, which will eventually be published in full:

I feel like now we're at a 10 year cycle for console profitability for everyone except Nintendo at this point...

Peter Dille: Except Microsoft too!

I'm not saying they're profitable.

PD: They're also not 10 year! The first Xbox was around for 4 or 5 years, and then they stopped making software for it.

I'm just saying it's a longer tail before Sony and Microsoft will make money.

PD: I don't want to be argumentative, but I take issue with Microsoft either having a long tail, or being profitable, because they've never done either. They've never made a dime in this business, number one, and number two, they've never had a tail. They've never been successful enough to have a tail! So the notion of a back half of the curve doesn't exist for them. They stopped the Xbox and I kind of feel for the guy that bought an Xbox the month before they said we're out of business, we're moving on.'

The reason I get a little emotional about that is it's in stark contrast to our approach. If we've got something that says PlayStation, we're going to stand behind it for 10 years, and deliver games like God of War II in the 7th year of the cycle.

With the Xbox 360 you've got an inconsistent design, some have a hard drive, some don't, and none of them have Blu-Ray, and the HD-DVD will be out of business in a matter of months. Is this a 10 year product? And by the way, it doesn't even work. Do they want to be selling it for 10 years and refurbishing them all for 10 more years? I don't think that's a 10 year product. You could disagree with me, or they could disagree with me, but I'd put that up against the PS3 any day. "

LOL, Sony execs should be comedians. I always get a good laugh every time they open their mouths.

Good grief... Sony's certainly getting desperate. According to their prediction, and wishful thinking, HD DVD should have died a long time ago... except it's alive and well....

It's only the 60gb PS3 that's dead. The price cut to $499 is only to clear the remaining stock.

And a L-O-N-G hilarious thread about it here:

Isn't this about the 20th time this year that Sony or one of their shill partners (Sigma, Fox, Disney, etc) have declared that HD DVD is dead?

Somebody better tell the people that are still buying the A2 in record numbers and buying software at a respectable pace.

Stop buying guys!!! Sony says it's over!!

Maybe just maybe this rant with piss off a couple of higher ups at MS and they go for the juggler and cut prices on the Xbox 360 and cut the price on the HD DVD add on to around $100 or better yet throw in the HD DVD add on with all future Xbox 360 purchases. I'm format neutral but crap like this makes me wish I stayed on the red side only. I would love to see MS kick some Sony Butt...they deserve it.
hahah if HD-DVD dies any more times it'll be as dead as apple was claimed to be so many times

:-)

I really want to be format neutral at this time, but it is this kind of S@%t that makes me appreciate HD DVD more and more. They only can quote standing behind their products for 10 years because the prices are so out of whack with most of us, that they will still have original volumes 10 years from now waiting to be sold!

Five Stages of Grief:

1. Denial

2. Anger
3. Bargaining
4. Depression
5. Acceptance Sounds like Peter is solidly at stage two.

More nonsense FUD from Sony. They do not seem to understand that they lose more customers with these comments than gain.
I love my A2 and PS3. The PS3 is a great machine. However I don't understand what orga&mic experience these Sony execs get by making such unhealthy views and comments.

Agreed. I have been considering going format neutral by the end of this year (and admittedly, I still might), but statements like Dille's only strengthens my support of HD-DVD.
Since Sony is third place this gen, you are surprised a marketing guy is attacking MS and mentioning the successful ps2? Marketing = Spin. The quote about hd dieing is foolish and self serving. Didn't they say the same thing about betamax, ump, minidisc, altrac, and memory sticks? Of course they are going to promote and spin. Thats what marketing does.

Their desperate as hell...The PS3 60 GB is not selling as planned, millions of unsold PS3's sitting on shelves and in warehouses and the PS3 is sitting dead last in the gaming industry. Now they must have a FireSale. I hope they fall flat on their faces what a bunch of thugs.

Your sig is outstanding sir!

The real humor is that Sony has thousands of braindead zombies that will cling to his every word.
Compare this to Peter Moore's comments recently and it really shows how different the cultures are in the two companies. Moore gives Sony nothing but props, while Sony exec acts like a schoolage bully in the playground.
Wow, Sony just doesnt get it this time.

And what with this 10 years life cycle crap. The PS3 sofar has not even touched anything on the 360. Every multiport looks and plays better on the 360. So is it future proof becasue it so hard to develop for? Kinda counter productive IMO.

Everytime Sonys says HD-DVD will or is dead, Hd-DVD steps upto the plate.

Sony has to realize that the spin game inst working for them anymore. Many more consumers are more savy now, more consumers are doing research online, and hence this spin is backfiring. Just look what there hype train did to the PS3.

<---considering getting Blu-Ray at the end of the year, but stuff like this drives me away.

You know.....now I feel like buying another HD DVD player

What amazes me is how little class Sony execs show by disparaging the competition. If they were truly as confident of victory as they claim, they could afford to be a lot less snarky about the opposition.

It's not that MS and Toshiba aren't cocky capitalists, but they seem to confine themselves to bragging about their own accomplishments and not constantly feeling the need to trash the other side.

For a console that has performed so poorly at launch, they'd better hope the PS3 has a long life cycle to catch up. But something tells me the competition might have other ideas.

Meanwhile I'm enjoying the terrific movies and games out now and coming soon on my dead format HD DVD player and loser of a console Xbox 360.

I was holding off on a Blu-Ray player mainly because of the lack of mandatory specs.... then BD+ came in the picture and now this Sony guy? Looks like when/if I get a Blu-Ray player it definitely won't be a Sony.
