Help me make my HD-A1 work please

I bought an A1 last week, but it wasn't sold in a working condition, it was in many pieces as the previous owner had removed the drive to use in a PC, only to find it didn't work in a pc. So i bought it, put it all back together and it turns on fine etc etc. However, today i went to play a hd dvd in it but none of my films will play as the firmware is out of date, so i downloaded the firmware update, burnt it to cd and loaded it into the drive it ran through the process as i believe it should, the disc ejected, unit turned off, and it says on the update instructions to remove the disc and press the power button, which i did, but now the unit is stuck displaying WELCOME on the front panel and i get no image on the tv at all. I've tried unplugging from the mains and trying again but it just does the same thing, i've pressed all the buttons on the front and on the remote and i've given it a good kicking but nothings worked so far, so any ideas? have i killed it? how do i give it cpr?

A bit of a longshot here, but try updating the player with the v. 2.0 firmware. Some around here have had problems updating to 2.1, 2.2, or 2.3 and have gone back to 2.0.

If you can get to it, clear anything in the persistent memory/permanent storage.

Good luck!

Remove the cover and re-seat the memory chip plus check all the ribbon cable connections.

Yeah it looks like a laptop memory chip. I remember one owner fixed his A1 simply by re-seating the chip.

If it was an upgrade, it mostlikely "bricked" (the crypto) the unit, there is a way you can fix it (you need another unit), but If you wanna get rid of it on the cheap, do let me know!

I have a briked a1 as well. How do you use another unit to repair it? I have an rca hdv5000.

Basically, its a bit more dangerous, and has to be done at the exact right moment, but:

Remove HD-DVD player from busted Gen 1
Remove Flash from Working Gen 1, back it up (you need this, its a USB device, a DD works etc)
Plug in working flash, to working Gen 1 unit (with working hd-dvd to power and IDE, and broken hd-dvd drive to power only, get a Y splitter0

Boot it up, start the internet download
after 10% or so, swap the HD-DVD drives (just the IDE cable)

Let the upgrade finish, move the flash and HD-DVD drive to your broken unit. Boot it, should work (atleast come ON to let you navigate menus etc)

Then take the flash from the broken unit, write the image from your working unit onto the broken units flash, stick it back in your working unit, and that one is back in the game too.

Quite a bit confusing, and you can end up with 0 hd-dvd players vs 2, why I wouldnt really suggest it!

i'll bear that in mind but it would probably cost more in shipping than the unit is worth as i'm going to assume that you live in the US whereas i don't![/color]

Always with the oceans, next time you move, move closer to the USA
