1080i vs 1080p

I just got my new Pioneer 5080HD but have not had a chance to hook it up yet.

I see the Toshiba HD-A2 isn't that expensive. It doesn't do 1080p but does 1080i. Would I notice a difference with a 5080HD plasma if I got the cheaper HD DVD player that does only 1080i vs the more expensive one that does 1080p? Is there a significant difference on a 5080HD?

Thanks.

Considering your Pioneer 5080 is a 720p set, you actually want to set the HD-A2 to 720p output to match the resolution of the set. You can try 1080i and see if it looks better (the Pioneer may be better at scaling than the Toshiba), but you should not see a difference between the HD-A2 and the HD-A20, or 1080i vs. 1080p on the 5080. AFAIK, the HD-A20 accepts a 1080p signal from the HD-DVD disk, downconverts to 1080i, and then upconverts back to 1080p.

On a Fujitsu 720p plasma, the only set I have experience with connected to an HD-A2, the 1080i output looks better then the 720p one does. Play around with it and see what ends up looking better to you.

If you have a Comcast box and if you change it from 720p to 1080i, their is no difference in picture quality. The results should be very minor at best on your Toshiba HD-A2. SLCentral has posted a good observation.

The 5080 is 768, not 720. So a 720 signal would still need to be scaled.

I don't have an A2 yet, but may buy one. They may be down to $99 soon for one week (not sure though):

Also, this article seems to say that 1080i would be fine.

So it indeed looks like I would not get a significant (or any) advantage with the 1080p HD DVD player vs the 1080i.

I believe the $99 price is only for attendees at the Home Media Expo in Vegas.

It could be... but I don't think it is known for sure yet.
