Outdoor movie recommendations

My family falls in the same boat. Most kids who come here are around 10, at the oldest. So we're looking for the same always.

We just did Hoodwinked this last weekend. Lots of fun for that movie, and it seems that not everyone had seen it, like the Pixar flicks. It's not live action, but still fun.

In our queue, for next year, is Bridge to Terabithia, which is rated PG and live action, but one of my daughters is still a bit young for it.

Regular non-Pixars I've done and are perfect for that age are:

E.T.
Night at the Museum
The Mask
Star Wars - any of them

But I'm in the same boat - I'm tired of the same old everyone's seem them 100 times Pixar movies. So I'm looking for more of the E.T. type. And of course Home Alone might as well fit into the same Pixar category. Uncle Buck might be a good one?

I am new to the whole outdoor movie experience (this weekend will be my first) however I too have a large contingent of kids 10 and under in the neighborhood. So I was thinking of showing some of these movies: (In addition to the standby Pixar fare)

We are showing Casino Royale this weekend, so the next flick has to be a family movie. We are probably going to wait until the end of September and show "Monster House," to help get the kids in the mood for some Halloween action.

Monster House would be great outside closer to Halloween. We are planning to do Night at the Museum (Blu ray) this weekend and Wallace and Gromit!

We have done a few outdoor movies but run into the problem of the adults not always wanting to watch kids movies. RV went over really well and even the SD disc was bright and beautiful. Some of the scenery was amazing and the pq was great, even on a 14' wide screen. Happy Feet on HD DVD was a good picture but everybody lost intrest. We took the pj camping, along with my HDA2 and a set of computer speakers. We hung painters drop cloth ( my screen of choice) off of the canopy off of my brother in laws camper canopy and watched The Departed. It was so late before it got dark enough to watch that the kids were already asleep so the adults enjoyed being able to watch a more grown up movie and we did not have to worry about offending the neighbors... I can't immagine watching something like this in my back yard. We have also done a few concert dvds, The Eagles on HD had everybody up dancing.... and drinking... and then more dancing!

I think my projector was easily my best entertainment purchase ever. It gives us hours and hours of pleasure in the house on my 119 HP screen and while a back yard movie is not that often, it is a blast when we do have one.

Tomb Raider - Mmmmm, Lara Croft on a huge screen....
Lord of the Rings - If you have a really, really appreciative crowd, and good neighbors...
Original StarTrek Episodes - Cheer for the guy in the Red shirt on away missions.
Miss Congeiniality - Good family movie
Monty Python and the Holy Grail - Gotta love British humor, though.

The classic (unedited) Looney Tunes (back from the 70's and 80's) Use them for pre-movie entertainment.

Or Monster House and Haunted Mansion closer to Halloween of course! Oh and on Blu ray!

I'd have to disagree w/ the Last Mimzy. Just watched it last night - BORING! Family movie, yes, kid funny, NO. Very shallow plot.

I'll have to check out Sky High and Zoom - never heard of them.

Sky High was better than Zoom IMHO. The same idea just more fun in Sky High for the kids. Zoom did have some fun moments though. Can't really go wrong with either one.

My kids loved Sky High (and I must admit, so did I), but when they saw the trailer for Zoom they both said it didn't look good. The critics agreed and I saved $30 at the theater.

Its been awhile since anyone has posted here. I just recently had a GTG for an outdoor movie night that featured Night at the Museum. I am planning another one in 1 week.

Can you some of you recommend some recent Good movies to present that caters to the entire family (young and old)?

If nothing recent, then what classics?

I am a lurker here, as I have no equipment for outdoor movies but I have lots of desire as I am very intrigued with the premise.

Speaking of Days of Thunder, run your HDTV out to the outdoor theatre and show the NASCAR Nextel Cup race live from Richmond. That would be a hoot!

Truth be told, most movies would be nice except for documentaries like maybe Bowling for Columbine, Inconvenient Truth and so on.

Oooh! Fantastic Voyage would be awesome! Wish they would do a remake!

Which would be a better showing The Incredibles or Cars (both acceptance by various ages as well as PQ).

I am just wondering if any of these 2 suffer in PQ when viewing on a projector

My first outdoor movie night I feature Night at the Museum. This was hit on a couple points. 1, the movie sat well with kids and adults. 2, everyone was in awe of the movie playing on my garage door!

Anyway, now I am stressing about geting a hit with the crowd again that will feature most of the same crowd plus new.

I really need another good movie to pull this off.

I am thinking of Incredibles, but not sure just yet.

How do you all think Back to the Future will work? Most of the crowd will be age 7 on up.

We did Back to the Future for our Dept Movie night. It was easily the biggest hit. People actually cheered when George hit Biff outside the car! We even put a fake clock on top of our Courthouse, some Save the Clocktower posters and I got a local guy to bring his Delorean. Really Cool!

Here is are list from the summer. We ran for 10 Wednesdays starting about 8:45. Odd time, but we have quite a few other events also. Still had great turnouts.

The choices are hard when trying to satisfy all. I am going with Back to the Future as I have prepared an 80' Movie Trivia slide show and to keep with the 80's theme, I will show Back to the Future.

Do you recall how this show sat with the young ones (a 5 yr old, some 8 year olds and then it goes up from there) (or should I say, how did the young ones sit with the show )
