What Resolution Do I Set?

I just got a really great deal on a Phillips DVP 5960 ($40). I'm wondering what resolution I should set it for. My TV is 720P/1080i, but I think I recall hearing somewhere that I should set the DVD player to 480i and let the TV do the conversion. Yes, no, maybe so?

What is your TV model? Does it have an HDMI input?

You have to use HDMI to do upconveritng with philps model. 480i works on composite cables which is totally useless.

Between 720p/1080i it depends on your TV resolution.

My TV is an HP with HDMI, 720p/1080i. However, I've been told its better to let the TV do the upconverting, and just let the DVD player send a clean signal through the HDMI (ie: set DVD player to 480i). Any thoughts on this?

Philips doesn't support 480i thru HDMI. Oppo 970 does that.

You're still not helping. Is it an HP DLP? If so, it is either 720p or 1080p (there is no such thing as a fixed pixel display that is 720p/1080i). All HDTVs can accept 720p and 1080i, but all fixed pixel displays can only display 1 resolution (they automatically scale to their native resolution, which is the resolution you should output).

Try each setting possible in the setup menu and you'll soon find out when one is best.

I've done "by eye" comparisons on my setup, and setting the dvd player to 1080i always looks better then 720p or 480p.

It depends on which has the better upscaling hardware - a $40 DVD player or a $xxxx TV?

My TV has a very good video processor, so I set my DVD player to output 480P over HDMI, and I let my tv upscale directly to it's native resolution of 1366x768.

But I don't know about your TV. Just try all your options and judge with your own eyes.

For 480P, I recommend turning down any artificial sharpening on your DVD player, if your player has a sharpness setting, so that the tv can process an unmollested image.

The only disadvantage with outputting 480P over HDMI is the DVD player won't automatically pillar-box 4:3 videos, you'll have to switch the aspect ratio on your tv remote control. But in 720P or higher, the DVD player will render the black border, allowing you to leave your tv in widescreen mode all the time.

It really depends on the specific equipment (1080i does not always look better from every player to every display).

Its an HP LC3760N (I believe that is the model number). Its a 37" LCD TV. Although the picture got so-so ratings on Cnet (I think its OK), the video processing is one of the things they liked best about it. However, I noticed some "ghosting" on a DVD player (xbox 360 via component) so I might try the DVDs upconverting first and see how it goes.

Thanks for your time.

This. 720p looked better on mine, DVD player did the upscaling.
