Electrical Box question

Hey--

Going to start working on my basement/home theater here pretty soon on the house I just moved into, and I've got a question. For some reason, the electrical panels (2 of them, btw) are in the garage instead of in the basement. The garage is completely finished and drywalled, so there's really no access to add in any additional wires.

I guess I was wondering what my options are. Right now I can think of two:

1) Install another electrical box downstairs (probably expensive because I'd have to hire it out)

2) Cut a section of drywall out of the garage wall running from the electrical box to the basement. Cheap but would mess up the drywall pretty good since it's textured and painted already.

Anyone else have this same problem? Seems like the previous owners were somewhat shortsighted on this--2 electrical boxes aren't going to do you any good if there's no access to them, lol.

Thanks

My guys just broke out the back of my box following my air conditioner line (my garage is finished also). They didnt have to really do anything in that area.

I don't think that'll be an option in my case. Air conditioner is on the other side of the house. Basically, all the wires in my house are enclosed in the side garage wall before going to the rest of the house (about 15 ft before it reaches the main part of the house).

Although I hired out my sub-panel, I was in the same position as you. My contractor added a 100A breaker in the main panel (I only have 1 panel in the garage) and brought the wiring through conduit outside of the drywall from just below the panel. Although it is not hidden it is after all a garage and it is up to code, which is more important than aesthetics anyway. Only cost me about $800 installed. Worth every penny for me not to have to string 12 circuits back up to the garage since I am doing the whole basement. Whether it is worth every penny to you is up to you. I vote add another box and give up on trying to make everything look like it was built that way.
