Official APF 2K8 Impressions/Discussion Thread - Page 2

I've only played part of one game so far but my first impression is that this game is the real deal. It is tough but playable. It has been a while since I've played any other football except for Madden so it will be a while before I'm comfortable with it.

I'm not sure what the deal is with whether this is "next gen" or not. I think it looks great. The animation is smooth, the game play is tight and I didn't see any jaggies. I didn't play any PS2 games or XBox games that didn't have at least some jaggyness.

I don't miss the franchise mode much. I always thought that there should be more control over how the league is run (salary caps, free agency) if you are going to have a franchise mode. I would enjoy a fantasy franchise mode where I decide if there should be salary caps and free agency but dealing with that stuff is way too sim for me. I like to play football. I like to play a season of football. I can take or leave the franchise mode, the mini games, etc.

I'm sure I'll wind up getting Madden also but for now I'm liking All Pro Football.

I'm trying to figure out what kind of Hateorade the folks at 1up were drinking when they threw down a 6.5/10 on this game, regardless of system.

I like everything you've mentioned so far but there are a few things that concern me in terms of making 2k8 a complete football game.

1. Speed of the game- I read in another forum that the speed of the game is pretty slow. WR's run their routes pretty slow, does it feel slow compared to madden? That's one thing I did like about madden, the pace of the game was realistic (although many other things like you mention weren't). I think the "next-gen" madden games are complete crap, and still very much enjoy madden 07 for xbox/ps2 with the exception of the graphics.

2. How is the audibling/hot routes/etc- This is one thing that I believe madden did very well (in the old-gen versions). You can audible any specific person to change their coverage pre-snap, or change the route of any receiver pre-snap. Does 2k8 have alot of audibling functionality or just regular audibles via the 5 different preset audibles? I love in madden (I mostly play online) how you can have ur linemen crash to the inside/outside/left/right, shift left/right/outside/inside, and same with the LB's.

I'm not going to rush out and buy this game because $60 is a good chunk of $, unless it's worth it. If I could find it for less than 60 somewhere I'd jump on it now.. I guess I'm a cheap mofo. I'm just really sick of the crap the EA churns out each yr for madden and online play just turns into a cheese/glitch fest. The older versions were pretty decent overall, but the next gen versions of madden are a complete joke in every aspect.

1. The speed of the game is slower than Madden. I think Madden's pace is a little too fast. Kind of like how I mentioned your QB has to stop and plant before throwing and also takes longer to throw when bombing it down field. this is much more realistic pace I feel. I guess you could say the receivers run their routes slower but I think that is because their animations actually have them pick up momentum when running rather than just starting full speed off the bat like in Madden. I enjoy the slower pace and make the game feel more strategic.

2. I can't comment too much on audibling/hot routes etc because I didn't really use them (and use them rarely anyway). I did use the normal preset audibles where you press triangle and you can then select a play. I can say I liked in NFL 2K5 that the right analog stick moved your D line to crash in or spread them out. This is not in this version which will be missed. Sorry I can't comment more on hot routing etc. I can check the manual for you and let you know.

Yeah I agree that the review seemed kind of harsh. Like someone else mentioned before Madden 06 on 360 got better reviews and it had even less features than this game. Who knows. Maybe they feel it plays too much like NFL 2K5, a last gen game. But I say if it ain't broke don't fix it.

There's no doubt in my mind that alot of these game sites are on the payroll (or heavily "influenced") so they churn out good reviews for EA games.. Like you said, madden '06-'07 are atrocious. I rented '07 for ps3 and the framerate is SO bad, it's like trying to play a computer game where the machine meets the minimum specs. There was literally a lag between pushing the button and the action in the game (VERY noticeable) which made the gameplay so poor it was unplayable. On top of that, the online game had an even SLOWER framerate. You literally could press a button sometimes, and it wouldn't even register because it ran so poorly/slowly.

It sounds like a fun game and I'll probably pick it up.. I just wish it was a little less than $60. Compared to madden of previous yrs tho, $60 seems like a steal. lol Sorry for the rant, I just wanted to say that the review sites are largely useless now (kind of sad). The only real info that can be had is from forums.

This game is weakkkkkk.....I rented it and the graphics are horrible....no modes whatsoever to speak of and as someone mentioned it is slower than madden!!! You can't get no slower than madden!! Bought NCAA and it is 100 times better than this game.

What is it that you don't like about the graphics? I thought it looked pretty sharp and the game play is tight. I don't need modes, I just need football.

The models seemed off. I still have the espn 2k5 (with T.O. on the cover) and the models in this game aren't much improved...

If you could explain in a little more detail why NCAA is 100 time better than this game people would take your comments seriously. Mind sharing what you don't like about the game in detail. And please refrain from saying it sux without saying why. Thanks if you take the time to add more detail

Wow, are you even in high school yet? Do us a favor and just don't post if this is the kind of crap you're going to post. I have neither game but your post is 100% crap. So why can't a game be slower than madden? Why is ncaa 100x better? If all you can focus on is the graphics not being quite as good as madden it's no surprise people eat up the $h!t that EA churns out and think it's chocolate. Grow up. Although I guess this is the gaming forum..

I am also curious what is better about NCAA 08 that makes it 100 times better than 2K8? Before I cracked open 2K8, I played the NCAA 08 demo on xbox Live so I could directly compare how the two felt side by side. After playing the first couple of plays in 2K8 I could already tell how much more realistic it played than NCAA 08.

I guess I am wondering what you saw so differently. I'll give you graphics because NCAA 08 is more polished looking. But I'd prefer to have TV camera angles for replays and a full halftime and postgame show full of highlights and commentary rather than the best NCAA can muster up is to show a camera shot of the stadium wall in between plays which is the most boring thing I've ever seen in my life. I pick presentation over graphics any day.

What about gameplay is better? anything? I like how in 2K8 the QB actually has to plant his feet to throw a perfect pass. Whereas in NCAA or Madden you can throw accross your body to the opposite end of the field while running the other direction and still make a good pass. In 2K8 you'll just float the ball by throwing off your back foot.

From what I remember seeing some of your other posts you do seem to just knock stuff for the heck of it without having real reasons to back it up. Kind of like many of the other NCAA and Madden fans that just play it because that's what they have been playing for years.

Also keep in mind saying this game is slower than Madden is different from what you are thinking. EA sports games have a horrible animation system and the motion capture sucks. It looks like the running animations are being hand key framed. This is why you think Madden is so slow. It is like playing NBA Live. The players move like mollasus. What EA seems to do is just simply slow down the animations altogether which gives you that slow feel. Whereas in 2K8 the game just plays more realistically. As I said before when the RB starts to run, he actually gains momentum at the beginning of the run like a real person has to do, he doesn't just sprint off at full speed from the first step like you will see in Madden or NCAA. Since the motion catpure is top notch in 2K sports titles, you get the most realistic movement which is why I say slower. Whereas EA titles have strange slow and fast speeds. Ever notice in NBA Live that players run like molassus but when they slam dunk it's super fast? That is what I mean. So I guess I shouldn't say slower than Madden, I should just say more realistic momentum.

Maybe I should not have used NBA Live as an example since PS3 doesn't have any NBA Live title yet. But for anyone who has played NBA Live on Xbox 360 will know what I am talking about.

Um....is Season Play not a mode? And as for the speed of the game....Game Options. Game Speed. Set to fast.
There are a couple of options regarding speed.
The default speed does feel a little slower; but to be honest that has helped me
learn the new right stick defense controls.

You hit Square to tackle, but if you flick the right stick you can
go up for the upper body
go down for the legs
left or right to pull the guy in one of those directions.

You can go with an even slower speed or you can also select a faster speed.

THe other option they have is an accelerated clock. It allows you to play full 15 minute quarters in about half the time. Really picks the pace of the game up but still gives you fairly accurate stats.

There are mulitiple hot routes and they are easy to do.
Before the snap you flick the right stick in any of 8 directions and then press the button of the receiver who should run that route.

You can also in the huddle call fake formation. The team lines up and then on your count the team will change to the real play.

Audibles are easy to perform and you also have a true hurry up/2 minute system.

I think the animations are fantastic. Ragdoll like animations as players fall over each other or get spun to the ground.

I've only been able to play about 4 hours so far, but do not regret this purchase.
I'm playing on the middle difficulty and think this game will be fun as 1p game offline, multiplayer offline, and truly great online.

Endless possibilities in the type of teams you build. You can go heavy on Defensive stars and then have a more basic offensive team or the other way around.

Also, even though the game fills the rest of your roster with generic players; you can assign these guys different abilities based on the type of team you want to have.

If a legend you want to play with isn't in the game; you can create him and put him in.

This game makes Madden feel more like Arcade football. APF is more like real NFL football.

I gotta say that I am loving this so far. I've only played through the first half with my created team, but the flow and feel of the game is fantastic. Much better than the last Madden offering, that is for sure.

One question though: is anyone else's audio clipping like mad? Any time a great play happens and the crowd goes wild, my sound starts to crackle like it's going into the red on a mixing board. Didn't have this problem with NBA 2K7, so I just wanted to see if it was happening to anyone else.
My AV receiver is indicating the game is outputting a DTS signal.
Weird things is the back of the box says Dolby Digital Sound.

Normally, my AV Receiver would indicate Dolby.

I haven't noticed any clipping. Sometimes the announcers are a little choppy.
Seems the audio strings aren't stitched together too well at times.

I was just thinking about that. They all got helmets on so it doesn't matter if they look like the real player. Just create whoever you want, give them a tier level (gold, silver, bronze) and give them their appropriate special abilities and you got whoever you want.

I will be making a Chicago Bears team since there are so many in the game. But I will be adding Jim McMahon using create-a-player

You can turn this option on. It allows you to pick the plays on offense and defense and then the computer will run the plays. You don't have to control the players.
+ I like how the QB moves, seemingly realistically
+ I like the overall speed of the game
+ I like being able to pick Randall Cunningham with a Silver pick.
+ The graphics arent great but I think that's because there's a lot of detail in how the players interact with each other.

- Not knowing most of the players on my team, especially when your star WRs are covered and Mr. Anonymous is wide open.
- The control pad defaulting to doing laterals.
- Sometimes the cut away scenes last too long and you can't by pass them
- Not in love with the kicking system
- I wished I could pick some of the non-star players

As other have said, the game play is pretty good. It's also fun to see Reggie White and Jerome Brown line up next to each other. I'll prolly like the game more after I read the manual.

The EGM/1Up "Sports Guy" has been a shill for EA going back to when he was a writer for OPM. Always gave the EA game the better score based on some variable. Oddly enough, he went to work as producer at EA BIG before returning to the game journalism.

Make of that what you will....

Anyone know where you can pick up this game for less than $60? $60 is a good deal of loot, and like I said, I'm a cheap bastard..

Ebay is always the answer my friend. Don't know what final selling prices are going for but auctions ending today are around $35 with $6 shipping. Otherwise it is $60 in any store.

Thanks, unfortunately we are not so lucky many several of the PS3 online games lack this
post #59 of 63
Played a complete game last night to start the season mode. I lost 10-7 to The Legends, I think. I could have tied it up in the 4th but missed a 30 yard field goal. I'm still getting used to the kicking controls. I'm playing as the Red Dogs because the logo looks a lot like the Bears logo. The first thing that my wife said when she saw it was that "those guys look like they're playing football!" She likes to watch football but doesn't play football video games much. One reason that it looks like they're playing football is that it has a good sense of ground. There's very little, if any, floating above the ground or sliding around like they are on ice that we've seen in previous games, Madden and others as well. Another reason is the animation. I have Walter Payton as my running back and when I run him thru a tight opening he gets skinny by turning sideways, etc. Another reason has been mentioned but is worth repeating is that the quarter back animations are pretty much spot on. Your QB can't throw a decent pass while back peddling. My QB is Cunninghan and I've had good results with stepping up in the pocket and throwing but if I scramble out of the pocket and am running sideways when I throw, forget it unless it is a short pass in the direction I'm running.

This game is a ton of fun and I highly recommend it. I hope the Madden this year is just as fun as this as I'd like to get it also this year.

Now for a few minor negatives. There are some jaggies. I had said earlier that I didn't see any but the first game I played was a different color field and there was no sun. In the brighter game that I just played I saw some very small jaggies. Compared to Madden 07 for the PS2 the jaggies in that game were like a rip saw and the few jaggies in APF 2K8 for PS3 are like a miter saw. They did not distract me from the enjoyment of the game.

There were drop outs in the sound that I did not notice in the first game. They were always with the umpire doing the announcing of the penalty. My wife thought it was just like a real game where the umpire doesn't turn on his mike right away! There were only a couple and again it didn't really distract from the game.

I can see why some people have said that the graphics don't look good. This is NOT eye candy. I still think it looks good but obviously a lot more went into making the football good and not so much in crowd animations and face mapping. Again these things do not distract from the game play at all. To me it looks better if they get the animations and ground physics right before they work on making it pretty.

Most of all the game feels like a finished product unlike Madden 07 for PS3. I'm really hoping that Madden 08 for the PS3 is a complete product because I have really enjoyed the Madden games of the past.
