White Knight Story: a truly next-gen action RPG

I've been excited about this Japanese RPG since it was first shown at TGS '06... and I don't even like the genre! Check out this amazing HD trailer from TGS 2006 to see how incredible the action plays out and you'll likely look forward to it as well. UPDATE: Here is some actual in-game footage from TGS 2007!

The production team Level-5 is well respected by fans of the genre as they have always done a masterful job of matching interesting stories with high-level visuals and exciting combat systems. Hits on the PS2 include Rogue Galaxy, Dragon Quest VIII, Dark Cloud and Dark Cloud 2. White Knight Story looks to perhaps exceed the quality of its predecessors as their first exclusive PS3 title.

More on the game was shown in Japan recently, and the first playable build will be introduced at the end of September at TGS '07. Despite the blond, androgynous metrosexual hero that seem to always star in these kind of titles since Final Fantasy VII became a hit, overall White Knight Story looks to be a game worth keeping a close eye on.

Not my style, but interesting. Looking good.

Very nice graphics with some interesting game play. I liked how he held his arm for a second after being hit there. Not sure if it's my cup of tea but will definitely keep my eye on this one.

Well, it gave me a woody. Might have to start saving up for a PS3.

Wow, this is the first time I've seen anything on this game.

Pretty awesome.

Hope it comes to the US, I'd like to give it a shot. I prefer turn-based RPGs or action-RPGs.

I've seen one or two screenshots of this game, but it was a long while ago.

It is looking very good now. The 7th gen has been severely lacking when it comes to decent rpg's so far.....so I'm looking forward to some real rpg's.

Wow. Very cool stuff. Looks like this could tide me over until FF13!

I have not played any RPG since the days of Final Fantasy VII in the PS (I know long time). This one seems worth a try.

Day 1 purchase!

It looks fantastic to me. Unless it completely bombs, this is a must have for me. Can't wait till TGS to see more.
Was that a game or a cartoon? It looks like they still have a relatively big job converting it all over to English (if they ever do).

Well if it is half as good as any of those games than I am in.

Level 5 has been making quality RPG's for a while and I cant wait for this one.
Awesome! Can't wait. Should be a decent number of PS3 games out there by next spring (I'm guessing this will be released in the US next year).
Woah... who gave FF those steriods? That looks rad.

US, July 18, 2007 - Producer Akihiro Hino's live demonstration of Level 5's new PS3 RPG White Knight Story was one of the highlights of yesterday's PlayStation Premiere event. Today, we managed to get a few additional details via an interview with Hino in the latest issue of Famitsu.

While we haven't heard much on White Knight since its unveiling at last year's Tokyo Game Show, Hino confirmed that the concepts behind the game haven't changed. The themes of the game are heroes and a magnificent fantasy, with a story centered on a simple premise, a captured princess whom the hero must rescue.

The game will have a story-driven structure, with players being able to advance to new areas as they clear story sequences in one area. However, Hino expects the player freedom to slowly grow as you advance in the game, with quests appearing in previously inaccessible areas.

One of the new screenshots that we posted from the PlayStation Premiere shows a new aspect of the game's battle system: a battle between two giants. What's surprising about the scene is that in addition to the large White Knight and his foe, human-sized characters can be seen fighting as well.

The staff had to make a few adjustments to get this system to work, visually. Originally, the giants were supposed to be 15 meters high, but at that height, they couldn't be made to fit completely on the screen while showing the human-sized characters as well. So, the designers switched to 7 meters height, and everything fit just perfectly. Hino believes the current size allows players to get a feel for the size of the giants while still allowing for human characters to join in on the fray.

The game will be full of such giant beasts. Look forward to a large number of knights on top of the White Knight and his rival, the Black Knight. The game will also feature giant monsters, including a two-kilometer insect that carries a town on its back.

Hino was also quizzed on the character creation component that was also unveiled at the Premier event. While the game's main cast seems to be set, you'll be able to create your own character that will then adventure as part of your party. Hino suggested that players might want to create their own likeness so that it will feel like they're a true part of the adventure.

As we mentioned yesterday, the character creation facility is powerful. In fact, it's actually the same set of tools that Level 5 used when creating the game's NPC characters! To show off the toolkit's power, Famitsu showed a number of celebrity recreations, including one of the magazine's Editor in Chief! The avatar versions looked spot on with their real life counterparts. Looks like Nintendo's Mii Channel may have some serious competition!

The interview closed off with another promise of a Tokyo Game Show playable demo. Just two more months!

OK. I admit I said I wasn't sure this was my cup of tea. Not sure what the hell I was thinking - this clip sold me. If the gameplay is anywhere close to this it's a first day buy for me.

Though it's mostly CG, I'm wanting this game. It reminds me of Xenogears...it was the first RPG game that I could actually sit through until the end.

The big thing about White Knight is the gameplay mechanics. A friend pointed this game out to me last year and I was amazed that there was basically no transition between walking around and fighting, and the fighting itself looked so fluid and well coordinated that you could mistake it for a scripted cutscene. I haven't heard anything about it since until today (the trailer) - which is good, as the hype machine is not working full time (hopefully it stays that way). This trailer blew me away... I've been longing for a good JRPG since Xenosaga I and the Star Ocean 3. FF12 had great gameplay but I didn't feel passionate about playing it at all.

This game looks like it could revolutionize the genre if they can get the gameplay to be like it appeared in early trailers.

The new CG trailer sets the mood for the overall story... thanks aos007. There is also a new trailer available to download from the PSN if you have a Japanese account. It may likely be the same CG trailer but I can't check right now to be sure.

Game looks good. My only gripe is the annoying Japanese song played throughout the video.

I soooo want a good quality, next gen RPG. Played Oblivion to death, I need something to fill the void.

Actually, now I'm wondering if that was CG or not. It looked like it was, but the game is supposed to have a character creation feature as well.

If that were the case, either the trailer was real-time, or continuity is out the window.

EDIT: Maybe the character creation is to create characters that join the party, but are not part of the main story?

Curious, here's a picture of the character creation system

But this photo has, what looks like, the character that was being created in the fight, but doesn't look like one of the central character:

I found out about trailer this morning from a blog. The link I posted links to what looks like official Playstation japanese site (cdn.jp.playstation.com - and the dl speed maxes out my 6Mbit/s connection) so it's likely the official trailer.

Funny, the guy whose blog alerted me to this trailer said exactly the opposite. He was hoping they won't change the song for the NA release. I like J-Pop and thought the song fitted, but I'll admit that it's probably acquired taste like any other pop. At any rate this trailer was for japanese market, I imagine they'll change some things before it shows up on Playstation store (not to mention it was in wmv!).

When is this game supposed to be out? Sometime 2008?
