"The" Onkyo TX-SR875 Thread - Page 8

is there going to be a difference between outputting 720p from the ps3 or going through the onkyo 875 and having that output the 720p instead.

I can't see Silicon Optix putting up a press release for their collaboration with Onkyo on the new receivers without making sure that the Onkyo products used the reon up to, or near its full potential. Otherwise, it wouldn't look good for them as a chip manufacturer. I remember reading somewhere that Silicon Optix engineers spent quite some time with Onkyo to make sure the chip was implemented properly into the receivers. If I can find that article I'l try and post the link.

It wouldn't surprise me if there was a secret menu (other than the deep color) to allow a user to tweak the Reon.

(also, I wonder if it is possible to hack a receiver to get access to the VP capabilities of the Reon...... )

I hope so. Why Onkyo would make one in the 605 but not the 875 or 905? I don't know. Hopefully if one of the group stays at a Holiday Inn Express tonight, they'll be able to enlighten us tomorrow. In all seriousness, I hope a professional reviewer gets one soon and can crack it for us.

I bet there is a secret menu...
Has anyone other than the original poster received an 875 yet? I thought some people said that they had tracking numbers for delivery...

For all you guys wanting to send 1080p from your player to the 875 and have it convert it to 720p for your display:

Set your player to 1080i and set the 875 to output 720p. Unless your player or display has better video processing than the Reon, this will give you the best quality (for 720p).

If you have a 1080p display that only accepts a 1080i signal, that's a different ballgame.

I would love to hear how the 875 does in the HQV tests. Has anyone posted results yet? I might have missed it.....

TIA!

heh? I mean this thread will be more busy with new owners...
This is just a theory;

Maybe part of the difference in features/price between the 875 and 905 is that the 905 will take full advantage of the Reon while the 875 won't.

With a little work, this could grow up to be a hypothesis.

Yes, isn't that a little strange. I mentioned that a couple of days ago. I mean, it's been 3 whole days since svalley got his. And with all of the hundreds of per-orders and folks waiting to pick 'em up in person, what's going on? Do I detect the faint odor of fish in the air?
I was beginning to think the same thing given that he is the only one to receive an 875, but he has been a member since 03 and he has posted pictures of the 875. So, I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Well, those of us that pre-ordered early from J&R should all be nice and happy by this time next week...

Thanks for clarifying.. I think you meant "by now too"... don't mind me, I read your post after a long day and literally said "heh", while laughing.
I suspect there are some shy new 875 owners hanging around here that don't want to get hammered with a ton of questions or PM's.

He got lucky I believe and picked it up at a B&M. Most others are all waiting on their's via ground shipping. So most won't have them until next week. Unless someone finds one in stock at a B&M and happens to be a reader of AVS.

Plus, I think everyone scared people from posting with all of the questions like they have a duty to test everything for us.

Folks, I hear a lot of you talk about B&M so I just Googled it and all I could find in the first 3 pages was a lot about B&M Auto Parts and B&M racing transmissions.........nothing about B&M A/V. Do they have a website?
B&M = Brick & Mortar

In other words, stores like Best Buy and Circuit City
post #232 of 6032
There might be. When I started the 805 thread my PM box was full within a few hours!
Try "B&M?" next time you google.

And I know you gotta be kidding

I want my 905...like...yesterday

This whole "secret menu" thing, is ridiculous. What the hell is wrong with companies? Why would you make anything on your product a "secret"? I mean, a secret menu? C'mon! Are a bunch of little-kids running the company? It's amazing that they actually go out of their way, to make features (that you pay for) harder to access. Don't they realize, that by doing this, they are potentially losing sales, from people like us, that WANT to know exactly what a product, that we're paying over 1k for, can do? They expect people to pay over 1k, for a product, and then toy with them, when they do.

Have you ever been into the service menu of a TV? In some service menus there are literally hundreds of adjustments that can be made and you can practically destroy the whole TV with just a few wrong button pushes. I've spent quite a bit of time in my TV's service menu, but 99.9% of the general population don't even know such a thing exists, let alone tweak around with it.

I'm guessing the reason for a hidden menu in the 875 (if it does indeed have one) is to keep the unit from getting too complicated for the average user (AVS members generally don't fall into that classification).

With all of that said, it sure would be nice if there *is* a hidden menu.

I can certainly understand that. But, simply being able to tweak the video processor, cannot cause any permanent damage, to anything. Besides, that's what the instruction manual is for..to tell you what the adjustments do. Anyway, sorry about the rant, guys..
I think they hide the Reon control on a secret menu to distract consumers from the AVR's time travel capabilities that are un-lockable in the very same secret menu. Rumor has it Onkyo wants to keep that function underwraps until they can update the firmware. Lab testing showed the time travel fucntion in some instances resulted in accelerated genital aging in the Onkyo research techs - instead of enabling them to time travel.

Besides, secrets are exciting!

haha yes maybe if you hold power and push 88 on the remote

I disagree. I work in electronics at a theme park and I can tell you one thing for certain... the more 'control' you give a user... the faster they will break it, mess it up (an not know how to fix it), or just wear it out.

If they gave you 'control' of the Reon, and not knowing what you are doing, you set it you output 480i all the time... and you couldn't figure out how to get back to that menu to change it back...

Tech service would head straight down the hall, and start hanging the engineers by their sacks! LOL
