"The" Onkyo TX-SR875 Thread - Page 97

Can anyone with the firmware CD for the 875 zip the files and email me a copy? I have sent Onkyo an email and left voice mails but they must still be on vacation. I apppreciate the help as I hope this will help with a few issues I am having.

Just got a new 875 and am having trouble with the setup--I can't get any sound at all. Though I do have (composite) video from the connected components, there is no sound from the analog audio connections, which have all been designated as analog in the setup menu. Similarly, running the Audyssey setup results in no tone being generated. Anyone with ideas before I send this thing back for service? Many thanks.

Please read the first post in the following link. It will provide some hints.

I would strongly recommend getting it from Onkyo. There are warranty/accountability issues involved.

Thank you, Jvi. I should have mentioned that the HDMI audio was set to off in the Hardware menu. Of course, the main reason I got this receiver is that an HDTV is on the way and I wanted to take full advantage of its features. All my other components have mostly analog outputs, though at some point I expect to get some variety of HD DVD player and, whenever available, a strictly OTA HD DVR. So I'm still trying to figure out why there's no audio, but I appreciate your suggestion.

Hi, if you get a hold of the firmware would you mind sending a copy my way?

Thanks

If you don't get sound when you press the Test Tone button on your remote and cycle through the speakers, then either you have all your speakers and your subwoofer wired/connected incorrectly, or there's something wrong with your receiver. Are these new speakers? Are you confident in your wiring? Did you plug your subwoofer into the Pre-out connector? It's pretty weird that neither the speakers nor the subwoofer would work with the test tones.

Yes, I'm becoming convinced that the receiver is the problem. It replaced an 800 model (no problems with any of the speakers then), all the speakers have banana plugs and I've checked their connections several times, so it will probably be going back. Like a few folks I did initially plug the subwoofer into the wrong connection, but it's now okay..and is the only one to emit sound when any of the analog components are selected.

Thanks for the reply. I have left several messages this week with Onkyo and no reply. A little frustrating to say the least. If anyone has the update they would be willing to send my way...please do. I really want to everything squared away prior to New Year Eve. Thanks again in advance.

I'm wanting to buy an 875 tomorrow I think. I'm not sure whether I should get it from 6AVE or J&R. Does anybody have experiences with both? I'm also wondering who might have the newer inventory, as I want to get one with the newest firmware.

Both 6ave and J&R have good reputations. I got mine from 6ave about 1 month ago. I ordered it during their sale and it was back ordered. It came in with the 1.4 version (latest) of the firmware.

I'm still trying to battle myself in to getting an 875 instead of the 805. I have a Toshiba HD-EP35 and got instead of the XA2, mainly cause it's a 3rd Gen player and every now and then getting second thoughts about the XA2...

My receiver doesn't have HDMI so i'm running the audio through Analog cables. I'm now wondering how the soundquality would improve by changing my H/K AVR4500 to an Onkyo 875? I'm actually mostly wondering about how well i can "enjoy" e.g. DTS-MA through analog? Do i actually need to have the latest (and greatest) to be able to enjoy fully?

I'm looking to get Pan's Labyrinth soon and there the audio is supposed to be excellent, just want to be sure that i can be enjoying it to the max...

The 875 instead of the 805 is because of the Reon. Is it worth it??

Thanks guys for your help, AVS is better than any dealer i've been to!

Here comes the first post of a long time follower of AVS.

Great forum, equally great thread, I'd like to take this oppurtunity and thank everyone who has contributed.

I picked mine up from manhattan store of J&R on the 7th of December, it took me half a dozen phone calls and two seperate weekend trips to store until the unit was in stock, not a very big problem as I was staying in battery park city. I could not order online&wait because I was going to carry the unit abroad with me and I wanted to make sure I did not have a bum unit.

The salesman named Aurelio helped me a lot, took the unit out of the package and tested it after I bought it and made sure it was working, which is no small thing considering the size and weight of the unit, not to mention the speakers he had disconnect from another receiver. I have also seen with my own eyes he took the time and helped another customer very patiently for 20 minutes on the phone. More importantly he knew what he was talking about.

The price was not anything like the 6th Ave sale price, but it was on par if not better with every other place I checked. My experience with them has been extremely satisfactory.

The only small setback I had was picking up the silver one instead of the black one wife had opted for, and that was due to stock inavailability. They had the black one in B&H but J&R customer service was the deciding factor for me.

Firmware was 1.04.

You will need hdmi 1.3 to get DTS HD MA. Plus, it's not only the Reon, but more connectivity and a little better SQ

I believe you will find the audio to improve running HDMI through either the 805 or the 875. As for the Reon processor, I happen to own a Toshiba HD-A2 and an 875 so I have been able to compare the upconversion capabilities for SD DVDs. My opinion is that the A2 and the 875 provide essentially equivalent upscaling for SD DVDs. The Reon is most useful to me in the upscaling of SD TV. I have quickly learned to love HDMI connections. They are both clean (great to have only one cable) and provide the best audio and video quality. Since the 875 has one more HDMI connection, this may be important to you in the future depending on how many devices you expect to connect to the receiver. All that being said, the EP35 and 875 are a great match for each other. Sound and Vision just paired them together (A35 of course in the US) in the January issue in their top recommended system. For a really good assessment of how they work together, check out this review of an A35 by Ed Norton of Ultimate AV as he uses the 875 as the test receiver for the review. http://www.ultimateavmag.com/hddiscp...107toshibaa35/

I am the OP and one of the people who have a brick 875.
I strongly suggested that you wait for Onkyo (Bob Elder) instead of updating the 875 yourself. BTW, email to Onkyo is useless, just call Bob and leave a message (or multiple messages). Bob will call you back but takes awhile.

I am super not happy with Onkyo support and it is the last thing I will buy from them. I will post the details once my receiver is back and fixed. I am without my 875 for 6+ weeks and counting.

Thanks for the reply and I have left Bob two voicemails still no reply...I guess I will just wait. I hate to here that about your Onkyo...you make me think I should return this since it is still within 30 days versus holding on to it and waiting for something to go wrong. What issue did yours have?

$1,127.00
TX-SR875
Delivered

Sixth Avenue Electronixs now has the TX-SR875 listed online for $1,199. I called and mentioned the product I was interested and that there was a coupon that expires Dec. 31st (code AFL6 - I read about this coupon in another post). He explained that it did not apply to this product. I never mentioned the coupon code number or discount percentage but just asked how we differenitiate what product it does apply to. He rattled off the number 1,127 and then said hold while he "checks with his manager". Took all of 3 minutes to order.

My 875 will not power up after the FW upgrade. The problem is suppose to
limited to the first built units. The 875 is a great receiver but Onkyo USA
support is not so good.

Where do you find the firmware version that is installed?

Sorry to repost, but no one replied to my question. What is the delay like (please read below). This is the one thing holding me back atm from purchase. Thanks.

I just recently bought the 875. I was playing a demo blu-ray from Dolby about TrueHD and DTS MA on my PS3. The receiver was only showing Dolby PLIIX. I couldnt get it to display TrueHD or DTS MA. The PS3 has the original firmware. I tried both HDMI and optical and I couldnt get neither audio format to work. I have set the PS3 to output bitstream. What do I need to get TrueHD and DTS MA to work? The Dolby demo blu-ray sound so good! Appreciate any help. Thanks.

The PS3 can't send TrueHD bitstreams. It can't even decode DTS MA. You should set your PS3 for PCM, not bitstream. It will decode TrueHD and send the decoded PCM. Your 875 should say Multich. And you should install the latest firmware.

I received my 875 today replacing and old Sony. Everything went in great connecting my C Band Satellite inputs into it. Audyssey wouldn't run until I figured out I had made a mistake on the top 10 Onkyo mistakes thread. The PQ looks great and the C band video looks great upconverted over HDMI to my Samsung 4665.

The problem is when I hook up HDMI from a RCA 1080p upconverting DVD player ($79) the "HDMI" light flashes several times on the 875 screen and then it displays "No Signal". I have tried all four HDMI inputs, made sure I assigned the HDMI inputs properly and tried on DVD and Game settings and same error. I tried different resolutions out of the DVD player and no luck. Using the same cable and going directly to the TV the DVD player works.

Any idea where I should go to first to find the problem. I don't have another HDMI source to test from. I'm sure my son would have me buy a PS3 just to test it out !!

Bob,

My situation is similar: need to choose between 805 and 875. I plan on using it with A35, PS3 and Comcast HD cable box with HDMI. My display is Toshiba 47HL167, which is known for not so great video processing. Since A35 will be upconverting SD DVD's, i guess the only way i can really use 875's Reon processor is on Cable TV. Question: is it worth for me to spend extra $400-500 on top of 805 price to get my cable box signal processed by 875's Reon? You mentioned that it is useful to you for upscaling SD TV. How big is the difference in real life?

Hi there, anyone knows about the 875 Q version that are starting to circulate recently???
I was wondering if it is something new after the P version ( the one that does include the 1.04 upgrade )or just a production letter on the serial number.
Can anyone that is recently bought an onkyo 875 check???
Will you also check up the version code upgrade by pushing display and standby on the receiver and list the full version code?? obviously also check if it gives you a REON access by pushing the display for 10 seconds on the remote.
Thank You Alex
