Twinseltown Theater - Page 56

Man that picture really puts it into perspective doesn't it - hope you don't want a little more toe in!

Did you ever get lossless HD audio formats working on your HTPC? I'm monkeying around with mine trying to get things working - looks like I'll need to pop for a new video card to get that capability - and then I'll have to see what I need to do to XBMC to make it work, I believe the standard player doesn't do it, and you have to swap it out.

Whereabouts upstate? I'm heading from Pawleys Island to a condo in Cashiers all the time. Don't know about the LSU thing tho.

I just wanted to pop in here to thank Tony for hosting me for a few hours over the weekend and letting me experience his theater!

If you haven't been I want you to know that this room is a treat for the senses. Photo, video, and narrative aren't enough to explain the quality in the room.

Tony, like any of us, will be quick to discount his own work, point out the "flaws", and tell you what he'd change but for most people this room is enough to make you yearn for watching a movie, playing a game, enjoying some sports, etc.

The entrance that Tony recently crafted is even more impressive in person than in the photos. The sound is clear, transient, and strong. The picture was far greater than I expected, honestly. Keep in mind that Tony is pushing a Panasonic 4000 pretty much at the extreme of its power (14 feet wide! ) yet the picture is fantastic!

What I'm also impressed with is how the room is a destination but it is also a space that was designed from the beginning to be for a family. This theater isn't your typical "man-cave" No Girls Allowed clubhouse. This is a space built for Tony, his wonderful family, and his friends. I think that's what it's all about in the end.

Thanks, Tony! I had a blast and I can't wait to have you up to North Carolina to experience my own attempt.

Tony,

In this post you showed how you covered your Linacoustic with fabric. I was wondering how you did that, exactly.

I'm picturing that you rolled the Linacoustic onto the wall, tacked it up, and framed it with wood and then you just stapled the fabric to the wood. Is that close to correct? I'm trying to figure out how I'm going to do this in my own room.

Brad, I've shelved the HTPC project for a bit. One day, but too many irons right now. I saw on your thread that you got the new card installed and it looks like you're off and running.

Gary, I'll PM you.

John, I very much enjoyed your visit as well. Wish we had more time. I will make it a point to visit your place! And thanks for the kind words.

Regarding post #1156, the furring strips were installed first. I then rolled out the Linacoustic and cut to fit. The Linacoustic is attached with roofing nails (the big green washers). The fabric was then pulled over and attached with the staple gun. Two tips, make your furring strips about a quarter inch thicker than the acoustic treatment so that the fabric doesn't touch anywhere but the frame. It didn't happen to me, but I cut it too close. The other, don't over stretch the Anchorage fabric. Taught but not stretched is what you're after. Oh, and plan out your final trim work to hide all of the staples.

Thanks Tony, I hear you on the too many irons - between adding the HTPC, an XBOX to the HT, fixing our dryer, yard work - I hardly have time for an hour of MW3 at night!

I hear you Brad. My mw3 time is really going to suffer when I really get into my HT.

Are you guys saying that there is a correlation between theater work and theater play? The 20hours spent on UC3 in the last two weeks was priceless!

If you play in the HT, it counts as HT work right?

Of course! It's called a long term reliability study

Thanks Guitar. I'm not holding out on the photos....what you've seen so far is all there is to see. There's been nothing else to report. I'm afraid the holidays grabbed a hold to my schedule and hasn't let go. Those countertops are top of my list come January!

As you all may remember, I'm starting Graduate School at Clemson in January. Career changer. A few months ago I took a stab at the South Carolina Certification Test for Science teachers (The Praxis). I had ZERO expectations of passing. Well...just got the test scores back and......I PASSED!!! It's a huge weight lifted. Thank you all for your prayers. I'm really speachless. I wasn't a science major, and it's been 23 years since I've been in a classroom.

FREAKING AWESOME, Tony! Dude, that's great!

I passed my qualifying exam a few months ago, so I understand how big a deal this is! I'm proud for you! It'll be a couple weeks before you get that grin off of your face. Enjoy it, bud. You deserve it

Great news, Tony! Of course, you've long known what I believe : Always seek your Father's heart, then follow where your heart leads.

Thanks everyone. It's nice to have a place where "everybody know your name...and they're always glad you came..."

JPA, are you a teacher?

Al, you're darn right. It takes a bit of courage to change course. But, as Tom said, if it's God's plan, all you have to do is listen and execute! Hahahaha, that's ALL.
Not a teacher. I'd like to be, but I don't have the patience. I'm an electrical engineer, and I'm back in grad school working in a PhD. My qualifier was over stuff I hadn't seen in probably 10 years. I thought I'd failed it, so when I found out I'd passed I had that giddy feeling for probably a week. I imagine it's similar for you (although you were out a bit longer than me). So when I say I'm excited for you, I mean I was looking for someone to high five . Congrats again, bud!

Awesome. Congrats!

Tony, I see your DTS10s above are ported toward the wall. Is this recommended? I have mine facing the room.

Thanks,
Jim
